When it comes to birthing babies there is "your plan" and there is YOUR BIRTH. Our story is one where our plan was not how our child desired to enter the world and we are so extremely grateful for Katie's support, love and professionalism throughout our 36 hour labor and delivery. We cannot put into words how much Katie's presence meant to us before, during and after our daughter's arrival. She was our cheerleader before we knew we were expecting and she became our educator, advocate and friend over the 9 + month period our daughter developed. Katie made herself available to answer our questions and normalize our prenatal experiences. She made us feel heard and cared for, while encouraging us to always expect the unexpected. While our plan was to experience a natural birth via a birthing center, Katie made it clear that there was no wrong way to birth a baby and any woman's preference was 100% endorsed by her. In hindsight, knowing Katie is non-judgmental and accepting of all the ways babies can come into the world made our journey much more comfortable as we ended up transferring from the birth center to the hospital to receive an epidural and eventually a C-section for our child wasn't going to exit the womb vaginally. Katie was by our side throughout our lengthy labor and never checked her watch or made us feel like she couldn't stay to support us, despite being a Mom and wife herself. Rather, we felt she was 100% present, attettive to and anticipating our needs, and respectful of the birth process. She wore a shirt that read, "Mamas are magic" and she made me feel magical even though my birthing desires were not met. In fact, despite delivering in a hospital setting and having a C-section, both things I dreaded, I felt empowered and proud of myself for my efforts to bring our daughter into the world and I abosolutely love our birth story. I largely attribute this to having the support of Katie, along with my husband. 110% worth the investment!
Having Katie as our doula is one of the reasons we were able to have the natural birth we wanted with our first child. She enabled me and my husband to be the best possible team we could be. She was a coach and cheerleader all at once, and was such a helpful calm presence during the birthing experience. She took the pressure off my husband to remember everything we learned in birth class by recommending labor positions, position changes, etc. She would make recommendations and then allow my husband to be the one to apply counter pressure, support my weight, etc. I was so glad she was there constantly since the midwives and nurses flowed in and out of the room. I know my husband was also glad we had her as a voice and advocate for us as well. We hope to have Katie as our doula for baby number 2!
I could not recommend Katie more highly! When I first approached her, I had no idea what I wanted for our birth experience. Before I even asked her to be our doula, she shared information, lent me her resources, and helped me educate myself about our options. I knew we would feel more at ease and comfortable with her there, and I was right. When I was induced at 38 weeks, I was scared and upset that our birth was likely not going to go as planned, but Katie comforted me, helped me understand what to expect, and stayed with us every step of the way in the hospital. We were asked to make so many decisions that we didn't feel prepared for, and Katie guided us through the induction process with an eye toward sticking with the plan as much as possible. She showed my husband how to support and comfort me, and we both felt that that made the experience SO much more meaningful for him and pleasant for me--our daughter's birth was truly a bonding experience. Even though high blood pressure necessitated some interventions that we originally did not want, Katie helped me to feel 100% in control throughout the entire process and my memories of that time are warm, sweet, and overflowing with positive emotion--NOT confused, scared, or helpless. We will no doubt use Katie for future births and I recommend her to anyone interested in wanting more knowledge and control of her own labor and delivery!
This woman is MAGIC! She helped my husband be there for me in ways he wasn’t with my first. She reassured me that I could just when I thought I couldn’t and reassured me when things were normal. I loved her spirit, positivity, & her love for all the mamas and babies! She may have taken a kick to the face during a contraction but she is an absolute trooper! If you have any doubt about your pregnancy, delivery, or just know you want an amazing motivator by your side, don’t hesitate and just hire Katie!
I’m not sure how I would have done during labor without Katie helping guide both my wife and I thorough the process.
As a first time dad, I don’t think you can really prepare yourself for what’s about to happen. You can read all of the books, take classes, talk it out (and I recommend all of those), but in the end it’s like nothing you will ever go though. Katie guided us through the whole process which started with walking around the hospital hallways and stairs. She remembered all of the things you forget, or didn’t even know you needed like a speaker, Gatorade, and jolly ranchers.
Katie took a lot of the pressure off of me, she knew the positions, techniques, exercises, and distractions to use to help my wife get through labor all while keeping me engaged in the delivery. With Katie’s help my wife was able to stick to her birth plan and deliver without an epidural.
For all soon to be fathers I can’t recommend Katie enough, her presence and poise will help you stay present in the moment and allow you to truly enjoy one of the greatest experiences in life.
