I can't imagine my birth experience without Shama!! She was an unbelievable resource for me during my pregnancy, answering all of my questions quickly and thoroughly. She was an advocate and a source of strength for me during my labor and delivery (she communicated all of my desires to the doctors and nurses), and covered everything down to the little details... like the ginger tea she lovingly prepared for me to sip between contractions. She was equally supportive of my husband, who asked her when we first met her if she gave hugs to dads. She gave him one on the spot.

Shama prepared us perfectly for the birthing experience. She educated us on what to expect and what our options would be, she helped us design and adhere to a comprehensive birth plan. The end result was a birth experience that ranks among the best I've ever heard of.

Shama's background as a nurse in Europe along with her deep exeperience in the community and in American medical practice makes her a fairly unique candidate as a Doula. I personally have friends who practice and have done some research in my search for a doula and I had trouble finding somebody who really spoke with authority and made me feel safe, informed and supported. There is a lot of hippydippy, new age, non-science in the community and Shama was a refreshing departure from all that. Her guidance and support was based in rational thought and science.

If I decide to have another baby, I would need Shama by my side. I'm not sure I could come close to replicating the comfort and confidence of my experience with anybody else.

Shama is an AMAZING doula. I have used her for the birth of both of my kids and could not have done it all natural without her. She knows exactly how to help through each contraction and knows tons of tricks to help ease the pain. She would give me clear and quick directions right in my ear while in labor on how to push or to breathe and it helped so much. She was also great support for my husband. My husband was actually the one who wanted to hire her for the birth of our second because she helped so much with the first. It was nice having her on one side and my husband on the other side of me during labor. She even brought me fresh berries the day after giving birth, a very nice treat! She also knows everyone at VVMC which really helps through the whole labor and delivery process. I would highly recommend her to anyone who is looking for a doula in the Vail Valley or Summit County as well.

I have nothing but wonderful things to say about Shama! She was very supportive throughout the entire process, attending our doctor appointments with us towards the end of my pregnancy, meeting with us over lunch, dinner, or coffee to discuss any concerns we had or check in to see how things were going, keeping us well-fed at the hospital, bringing us a delicious breakfast when we came home, and walking us through baby Riley's first bath!

I didn't have very strong feelings about wanting one type of birth over another. Shama never pushed me into feeling like I needed to do things a certain way, but encouraged me to keep an open mind and see how things unfolded. I ended up having a natural birth with no pain meds (!!) because I felt so relaxed and comfortable knowing she was there to guide my husband and I through the process. She showed him what he could do to assist and helped him to become a partner in the birth, not just a bystander.

In summary: worth every penny and then some! We hope to have a second baby and plan on having Shama as our doula again :) she's amazing!

I hired Shama for my 4th pregnancy.  I had never had a natural birth, only those with medication and induced labor.  With Shama, I got to have an entirely different experince.  I credit Shama with helping me get my labor started naturally for the first time.  We consistently employed pressure points and breast pumping to accomplish this.  Once my contractions were consistent, Shama met us at the hospital.  She already had me checked in and a room ready and waiting complete with music, fresh flowers and aromatherapy.  My contractions slowed a bit upon arrival, so Shama helped me relax with foot massage and we also did more pressure points and breast pumping.  These brought on more natural and stronger contractions.  As contractions strengthened, Shama did her infamous "hip squeeze" on me.  This literally almost removed my pain up until the later part of transition.  Shama is very strong and has a lot of stamina.  She worked very, very hard to keep me comfortable during the hardest part of labor.  She was a constant voice of encouragement and a real team player.  She is very helpful at communicating with doctors and staff, especially in Vail since she is also an employee there.  I ended up having a beautiful delivery and overall birth experince.  Shama went home exhausted from her 110% efforts, but was back early with a lovely breakfast.  A few days later, she brought us fresh french toast souffle, homemade.  A few days after that, she visited our home to give our baby her first bath.  This is an experience you do NOT want to miss.  Hire SHama.  You will experience the beauty of natural birth and her cost is less than an epidural.  Her efforts are known around the hospital as a "Shama-dural!"  I have grown to love Shama.  She is one-of-a-kind!!!

Shama is a wonderful, warm, caring woman. Her background as a nurse is very reassuring, as she can answer technical questions and knows medical procedures very well. We met with Shama multiple times during my pregnancy and she and I went for a few casual walks too - all to talk about what birth is like and decisions I needed to make. She was completely supportive of my husband and me and did not impose any ideas or values on us at all, she gave us the information and the space to make our own decisions about how we thought we wanted things to go in labor and delivery. Later, when things got a little complicated towards the end of my pregnancy she even came to the doctor with us and helped us make important decisions - we really felt like the three of us were a team. Then, while I spent two days in the hospital as induction after induction failed, she hung out with me, brought wonderful home created smoothies and broth and was all around a great support. In the end, I ended up with a C Section and having her there with me was invaluable. Most importantly she was the person who stuck by me when the excitement was over, my husband went off with the baby, and I was left on the table. I felt so much better that I was not all alone. On such an important day in your life, if there is going to be someone else there with you and your hubby, Shama is the kind of person you want. Solid, reassuring, knowledgeable, incredibly kind and giving, and great to hang out with! Her intimate knowledge of the VVMC OB dept and personnel are a great extra bonus too!

Petra "Shama" Sambergerova was a fantastic labor doula.  She was involved in the birthing process long before the labor began, and her knowledge and training as a nurse in her home country really put me at ease.  That, along with her straight forward approach let me know I could really trust her opinion.  Also, I found her care to be phenomenal.  She really went above and beyond in terms of both pre-natal and post natal care.  I was very nervous about labor, even thuugh I wanted to try natural childbirth, so Shama and I took long walks where we were able to talk about how to handle the fear, as well ao how the pregnancy was going.   Shama made many visits to my house to instruct both myself and my husband. She even helped me with relaxation exercises!  Once the labor was underway, Shama proved to be steady, reliable and comforting!  The labor didn't progress very well, but Shama stayed with me, helping me make informed decisions, in my best interest, in light of the doctor's advice.  And once I had to undergo a C section, just knowing that Shama would be in the operating room made me feel so much better.  After our beautiful baby girl was born, Shama stopped by a few times just to make sure we were doing ok, bringing supplies from the hospital, and a delicious French Toast souffle.  I would highly recommend Shama to anyone who is looking for a labor doula.

After we attended Shama's  birthing classes  we sat down with her and talked about the services she provided as a Doula.  We did not even know what a Doula was or if we needed one.  After our initial visit we knew we wanted her to be part of our birthing team.  She provided us with a lot of information,  answered many questions and talked with us about various birthing options.   Whenever we would call her or meet with her she was always very friendly and helpful and added her own personal touch.  A service that the OBGYN could not provide.  When I went into labor Shama came to our house and helped me through the contractions in the comfort of our own home.  Even though she is not a doctor we felt at ease having there so we did not have to rush to the hospital.  When we finally went to the hospital having her in the room while I was in labor not only provided added support and comfort for me but she also helped my husband with techniques to try before, during and after the birth.  The birth of our beautiful baby girl went well beyond what we expected.  Everything went smoothly without any problems. We think the reason why was because Shama was there with us!!!

Thanks Shama.  You are the best!!!
