Laura Clarke

Anne was my doula for the birth of my second baby in the hospital and now my third baby at home. With my first baby, I wanted to have a natural birth in the hospital and had talked to my doctor about it before hand.  Unfortunately, it didn't work out that way.  I had nurses literally screaming at me and my poor husband to accept an epidural that I didn't want and finally the anesthesiologist just showed up and basically told my husband he had to leave.  The result five hours later was a healthy baby that was dragged out with a vaccum.  At the second birth (same hospital) the nurses were - if anything - uglier about my decision to refuse the epidural but fortunately, with Anne running interference, (and doing most of the labor coaching at home) we got to the hospital close enough to the birth that there wasn't much they could do or say.  However, we decided to have the third birth at home.  Who needs a big fight, right?

And that worked out great.  We were nervous because the closest midwife was over an hour away, but Anne had worked with this midwife in the past and as my contractions got stronger, Anne was able to set up, coach me, and have everything ready when the midwife walked in - about ten minutes before Juliana was born.  She was very calm, very relaxed, and I could not have asked for better birth support.  In addition, when Juliana unexpected had some serious feeding problems (not expected with baby number three) Anne was able to step in seemlessly with lactation support.  So helpful!
