My partner and I worked with Leslie McGhee* for the birth of our first and highly recommend her, without reservation, to any looking for a calm, kind, thoughtful, experienced & knowledgeable doula! She was wonderful in SO many ways! I most appreciated her presence: incredibly reassuring, calming, supportive, positive and uplifting! I had a great deal of strong emotions - fear of birth / uncertainty about motherhood - and she supported perfectly; listening to / validating my feelings without trivializing or dismissing, but also providing thoughtful / encouraging feedback to help me navigate those feelings and work towards an honest and meaningful birth. She also provided a wealth of extremely helpful info for both my partner and I - insights from her professional experience and additional materials/reading on topics most important to us - to better understand and prepare for birth and new parenthood. At the birth, she was invaluable: providing emotional and physical support that helped me labor longer at home (one of my birth goals); quickly forging relationships with the nurses/hospital staff to ensure a seamless, cooperative birth environment; striking a perfect balance between following my lead (about intervention choices & activities to support labor, etc.) and providing helpful guidance towards a gentler, more positive labor (bringing her own & locating hospital support items & identifying a time when both my partner and I might be able to take breaks/naps, etc.). Furthermore, before this experience, I worried that it might be difficult, awkward or uncomfortable to have a "stranger" join my partner & I for such an intimate act, but in reality, Leslie couldn't have made it easier or blended more seamlessly into our birth day. Overall, (obviously) a very positive experience!
* Note that we hired doula duo - Amelia Brady-Cole (also wonderful) and Leslie McGhee - but ended p working mainly w Leslie (visits/birth).
Leslie was an enormous help to my partner and I during our daughter's birth. She was not only kind, caring, and very responsive, but extremely knowledgable and preemptively helpful to our needs.
Her communication was excellent before, during, and after birth. She was a source of strength, calm, and reassurance while in the delivery room with me and my partner. She was always thinking about our needs without wanting to take over the process. I don't know what I would have done without her!
If you're looking for someone who is responsive, knowledgable, calm, and caring to be part of your birth team, I highly recommend Leslie.
We had a phenomenal experience with Leslie as our doula. Leslie was a joy to work with and brought calm, gentle, encouraging and loving energy to our birth experience. Prior to our birth, Leslie always let us know she was available to talk and discuss any questions and issues. She let us initiate most communications and we were able to set the tone and frequency of our interactions. She offered a lot of encouragement and assurance that we were preparing ourselves well for our birth and would have the phsyical, mental and emotional strength and tools for a positive birth experience. Leslie was indispensable during our birth. I labored at home for 8 hours before heading to the hospital. Leslie met us at the hospital and never left our side for 10 more hours of laboring - she coached my breathing, provided massage and counter pressure, kept me hydrated and nourished, helped create a calm atmosphere, shared words of praise and encouragement, and showed my partner how to provide similar supports. Leslie was an effective communicator with our medical team of midwives and nurses. Our baby's glucose levels were borderline low at birth and the nurses and pediatricians pressured us to get her to latch and start breastfeeding immediately. We intended to breastfeed her but needed time to recover from the intensity of birth, undergo surgical repairs, and help our baby acclimate to breastfeeding. Leslie stayed by our side and assured us that we had time to figure out feeding and that we could request more time and support to help get colostrum in our baby before resorting to formula or sugar water, which the doctors were telling us was the next step if we didn't get her to feed quickly. Postpartum, Leslie provided breastfeeding support and helped me process my birth experience and the confusion of emotions I was feeling around it. Leslie's involvement transformed our birth experience and we recommend her highly.
Leslie has a relaxed, soothing, calm presence. While I was pregnant, she provided helpful info and resources to my partner and me. During my labor, she comforted me at the hospital from 7 pm until 7 am. She stayed by my side during the night, while my family members slept, and acted as a sounding board as I worked through decisions such as whether to get an epidural. She provided much-needed lower back massages and hip squeezes until the anesthesiologist arrived and I was able to get some sleep. I don’t think she took a break or slept the entire night.
She was an extremely helpful presence not only to me but to my partner and mother as well, who weren’t always sure what to do to help me while I labored. Her knowledge of hospital practices and her interactions with nurses and my doctor also helped things go smoothly.
Leslie was a great comfort to me emotionally throughout my pregnancy and especially during my labor. I wouldn’t hesitate to hire her again!
My husband and I were very fortunate to find Leslie. She took such great care of us during the entire pregnancy, asking us questions that had us contemplate thoughtfully about our pregnancy and how to prepare for our little one. Leslie was vital during the entire birth through early labor at home talk to us over the phone for hours and meeting us soon after at the hospital to the delivery room where she was working behind the scenes to prepare in detail the room for labor to be a more welcoming and relaxed environment, taking care of my husband and I, and knowledgeably informing us of what was going on in the hospital room. She was so prepared, things that my husband and I never thought about, Leslie had with her to make the hospital experience more comfortable and kept us at ease. Leslie is very warm, patient and passionate and we were confident we were in good hands from our first meet up. Reassuring, supporting and encouraging us of our decisions for our pregnancy. In the most vunerable moments I have experienced, Leslie was there and I can't express enough what great strength and relief it gave my husband and myself. We can't imagine our birth without her and would turn for her help and guidance for our future child. We highly recommend Leslie for anyone considering to have the support of a doula!
Leslie was our steadfast guide, teacher, and supporter throughout my pregnancy and birth, and I would only entrust my next pregnancy to her care. Leslie brought patience, encouragement, and factual depth to our experience, taking the lead when necessary to interpret medical situations, and gracefully standing by when we needed private moments or assisting when the delivery physician took over. Leslie comforted me during early morning contractions, explained what was happening when our birth plan had to quickly change to a stat c-section, and calmly walked my husband through the steps of the operation. Leslie was again a wealth of knowledge postpartum, decoding everything from pumping to baby gear to our first bottle feed. We are grateful for her wisdom and warmth that has shaped our baby’s earliest days and enriched us as parents.
We loved Leslie and can't imagine our birth story without Leslie.
In prep for the birth of our daughter, Leslie met with us and helped us really think about how the birth might go, but also about what life would look like the first weeks home with our new kiddo. Although nothing can really prepare you for those first weeks/months, the questions and conversations Leslie had with us really helped us as new parents.
Once we found out the baby was breeched and we would have to have a scheduled C-Section, I feared we had wasted Leslie's time (and our money) since we wouldn't need a birth doula, but I am so glad she was there! Not only did she help my husband while I was being prepped, but she was with me from the moment I came out of delivery and was a non-drugged, clear thinking partner. She knew what was important to us and helped me feel comfortable, supported and was exactly the pair of hands we all needed.
We adore Leslie and are so glad she is a huge part of the story of how we became a family.
Leslie was amazing in every possible way. She was really there for me, and was very adaptable to my needs, whatever that meant. I felt very comfortable communicating with her what I needed. Sometimes that meant her stepping back to be out of the way, sometimes that meant swooping in to physically support me. Labor is an intense experience, and I felt so comfortable having her there with me to support the process. From our first meeting I felt comfortable with Leslie and she fit very well into our family environment, which included a toddler welcoming her new baby brother into the world. I would highly recommend Leslie as a doula for anyone who wants a very down to earth and capable doula who is able to quickly adapt to the wildly changing needs of the laboring woman!
Hiring Leslie was absolutely and hands down the best decision I made during my pregnancy. I felt completely confident and comfortable with Leslie before, during, and after the birth. Our birth was stress-free.
Before our birth, we met and talked about my plans (hardly any plans!) Leslie asked all the right questions to get us thinking about what was important.
In the run-up to our birth, Leslie was available by text message which I found very comforting. I was three days overdue and during this time we kept checking in with each other.
I labored at home for 8 hours. During this time Leslie was just a text or phone call away which helped my husband gauge just how far along we were. When we finally headed to the hospital, Leslie arrived soon after. I was so happy to see her! She immediately set to work familiarizing herself with the room, the hospital staff, and the supplies. Leslie answered any questions calmly and effectively, even when I was at the very end of my labor. I delivered, medication-free, holding Leslie's hand. Leslie not only supported me but supported my husband in supporting me - we both felt more confident knowing she was there.
After little girl arrived, we had trouble breastfeeding/latching and Leslie was incredibly empathetic and helpful, showing us different ways to feed and comfortable ways to sit. I was so thankful for her at that time that I cried.
Leslie is the best hugger. Leslie makes you feel as though you are the most important person in the world. She is incredibly knowledgable and personable. I am so glad to have met Leslie - Little girl and I will never forget her. I am recommending Leslie to anyone and everyone who will listen. May everyone be as lucky as us to have Leslie, or someone like Leslie, with them during their most special day.
Leslie was absolutely amazing. Because she was there throughout the entire process (including the lead-up and post-partum), my husband and I were reassured and comfortable in an otherwise overwhelming situation. She was attentive and helped us in ways we didn't even know we needed. 5/5 would do again.
Leslie has the most calming presence. I can still remember when she arrived at my side in the hospital while my husband and I were stuck in triage in the over crowded labor and delivery ward. It was such a relief to have a new energy in that cramped space before finally getting moved to a labor and delivery room. I was nervous about giving birth in a hospital, because my goal was to avoid unnecessary interventions. Knowing that Leslie was there to help me communicate my wishes with the hospital staff gave me a great peace of mind. She is a warm and kind person- the perfect doula.
From the first time I met Leslie, she was helpful, calm and like a drop of sunshine in my life. Leslie patiently answered all my nervous questions leading up to the birth. Once it was go time, she helped me and my husband understand what was going on during the labor and even held my leg up during the pushing! Leslie is a fantastic addition to the birth process.
Leslie has an incredible presence and the perfect qualities that make her a fabulous doula. From the moment I met her I felt at ease. She took the time to address all of my concerns as well as my husbands as we prepared and was responsive to all my questions leading up to my labor. There was a lot of pressure in my situation as well given that I was attempting labor after c section with my first. We strategized together and prepared to the max. I always felt like Leslie was in my corner and anticipated my needs well.
After developing a fever half way through labor, it wasn’t looking good. But Leslie, my husband and I fought hard together. She was prepared with every tool and worked tirelessly to keep me as comfortable as possible and hopeful. To the last second, Leslie was even massaging my hips, helping me get ready to push. And we avoided the emergency c section with only minutes to spare. I’m still on cloud nine from this incredible experience and accomplishment that I could never have achieved without her.
I highly recommend Leslie without hesitation and will be using her again if we have more children :)
Leslie was simply amazing during our birthing experience! My girlfriend was going to be a first time mom and Leslie helpled to construct a birthplan that completely catered to my gf's needs and wants. Based on her prior experiences Leslie offered advice on what to expect leading up to the big day and on the big day itself. During the actual birth, both my gf and I felt very lucky to have Leslie in the room. She was very supportive, but not overbearing which is exactly what my gf wanted from her doula. Also, Leslie provided such important advice on lactation that my son was able to hit the ground running! My gf and I definitely recommend Leslie and think she is an amazing doula whom will contribute greatly to your birthing experience.
We loved Leslie! From the moment we met her, I knew she would be the perfect fit. She was warm, knowledgeable, understanding, unpretensious, and had a great sense of humor. She clearly has a passion for her work and is committed to her clients. I recommend her completely!
We were initially on the fence about having a doula, but after the coaxing of some friends, we decided to go for it. We now tell everyone that Leslie was one of the best decisions we made.
Leslie's calm demeanor made us both feel at ease. She easily managed two women, with different expectations and feelings about birth and motherhood, normalizing our experiences. She is very intuitive, giving us space and encouraging strategies when needed, and without prompting. She had lots of information to provide, and made us feel as though we were prepared for the process. She seamlessly handed our expectations for a vaginal birth turned to last minute C-section. She quickly responded to all texts, even middle of the night ones. Honestly, what was a stressful experience was made so much more comfortable by knowing that we had Leslie there to rely on and to help guide us. We only have wonderful things to say. We loved having Leslie be a part of this of this excited and nerve wracking experience - she provided guidance, warmth and comfort, and we are so grateful.
Leslie was an absolutely invaluable support to us! She is warm, kind, and her passion for her work was evident immediately upon meeting her. Appointments never felt overly business like, awkward, or rushed and Leslie seemed like an old friend by the time our birthing day arrived. She truly knows how to make you feel comfortable! Leslie is a wealth of knowledge and was beyond helpful during my labor, providing unwavering physical and emotional support not only to me but to my husband and mother as well. Her sense of calm and positive energy are contagious. She worked so well with my very-involved husband and our care team, supporting our preferences and acting as an advocate for us throughout the entire experience. I could go on and on about how wonderful working with Leslie was, she is everything we could have ever wanted in a doula and we are so grateful to have found her!
