Melissa assisted me with my third delivery, this was my first experience with a doula. With my first two deliveries, I was strapped to a monitor lying on my back the ENTIRE time. My husband and I were terrified when I was delivering my son (my firstborn) and I was not notified when the doctor decided to perform an episiotomy!!! I believe that we were both traumatized. I share all this to explain that having Melisssa as our doula made our third experience COMPLETELY different!
Melissa made sure that my wishes were followed through as much as possible. Unlike my previous two deliveries we prioritized my desire to move around and change positions during labor by using a wireless monitor. She helped me get into a comfortable position (other than on my back) in preparation for pushing. Even my husband mentioned that having her assist me through delivery helped lower his anxiety and stress.
We don't plan on having another baby, but if we did, we would hire Melissa again in a heartbeat! I highly recommend her!
I can’t say THANK YOU enough to our amazing Doula, Melissa! She truly was every bit and more of the support both my husband and I needed to get through my pregnancy, labor & delivery, and postpartum period. God allowed our paths to cross and I will forever be grateful! I randomly found her on google as I searched for certified Doula’s in The Tri-Cities. I reached out honestly not even really knowing what a Doula did and was beyond pleased with her quick response to set up a meeting! She is such an amazing listener. I had several complications and concerns along my journey and she constantly checked in on me. She even came to some of my appointments to ease my mind when my husband wasn’t able to be there. She has great experience and broad spectrum knowledge. Even when curve balls were thrown our way and she didn’t have an answer, she went out of her way to research how to help us! My husband looked at me after all of it was said as we were holding our son in our arms, and said “Wow, what a difference she made”. It’s so true! Melissa coached me through the hardest 3 days of my life. 36 hours of active labor y’all! She pushed me to keep going even when my birth plan wasn’t going as planned. She reassured me that even though I had to be induced, I could still have the natural birth I desired. She never left my side and I know she won’t leave yours either! She didn’t stop there. She has been a continual support Postpartum as well. She even went to my first Mom’s Support Group as I have been battling PP depression so I wouldn’t feel alone! If you are considering Melissa as your Doula. Do it. Don’t think twice. Run! Just having someone to text or call whenever I need extra support has proven to be priceless. We love you Melissa. What a blessing you are to our community. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
I don’t know what I would’ve done without Melissa. With having our first child there were so many unknowns and she was a calming force for the entire thing. From staying up literally the entire night during labor, to never leaving my wife’s during delivery, she truly made the hardest thing in our lives the most victorious thing by the time it was over. I am grateful and I would definitely call upon her again!
I can't say enough positive things about Melissa! She is truly amazing and loves being a doula! I hands down couldn't have gone without getting an epidural especially during a pitocin induction without her! I was truly grateful that she was able to help me get there. She was not only a huge help to me but to my husband and entire family! My baby had to go to the NICU unexpectedly and Melissa stayed with us until we knew everything that was going on and we knew she was safely transferred to the NICU (I delivered at a hospital that didn't have the nicu in house) If you are pregnant, hire Melissa! You won't be disappointed. I still talk to her several times a week to fill her in on my baby and how everything is going!
I went through most of my pregnancy weighed down by the baggage of multiple decades of fear surrounding labor and birth. As excited as I was to meet my little one, to say that I was not particularly jazzed about the process of getting there would be an understatement. My husband and I decided--very late in the game--that we would benefit from the support of a doula and Melissa came through for us. Even though we didn't have much time to get to know each other before my baby's birth, Melissa's practical, no-nonsense advice and her diligence in quickly learning what my goals were and how to best support me quickly put me at ease. I wanted a very calm, peaceful, unmedicated birth, but I knew she would be flexible and non-judgmental and would support me if my plans changed in the heat of the moment.
She was by my side encouraging me and giving my husband breaks throughout my all-night hospital birth. Although my husband was incredible and our L&D nurse and midwive were wonderfully compassionate and patient, Melissa was the only person in the room who had given birth. As a first-time mom, I needed that assurance, through each stage, that everything that was happening was a normal part of the process (and that it wasn't going to kill me!) With her help, I was able to have the drug-free birth that I wanted, which has made my recovery much easier and given me more time and energy to devote to my darling girl. If you are looking for a labor doula who will work with you to help you achieve the kind of birth you want and will respect your individual goals and choices, I highly recommend Melissa.
Working with Melissa helped us to understand what to expect once it was time deliver at the hospital and what options we had. When I went into early labor, it was helpful to have her on call and have her encouragement. She showed up to the hospital shortly after we did. It was so helpful to have someone to help communicate with the hospital staff. She was by my side the whole time I needed or her (or not, when I just wanted some privacy) and she helped me to keep focused on staying relaxed, which was so important. We would have felt a little lost without her by our side.
I often tell Melissa that my son would not be here without her, she was absolutely essential to our birth for so many reasons. If you are on the fence about hiring a doula, please just schedule a sitdown with Melissa. Not only is she certified which put our minds at ease, she is patient, kind, informed, and professional. She met with us twice prior to the birth to go over any questions we had, different pain management techniques, the labor and delivery process, as well as helped us develop our birth plan. She provides education, resources, on-call support, as well as post-partum check ups (she's still checking up on us 3 months in!). And while this all was wonderful, where she really shines is in the delivery room. While my fiance was on one side, she was on the other - the entire time. She kept me company during the slower times, breathed with me during the tougher contractions, and was right there with me the moment my son came into this world (and even took photos!). Anything you could think of for support, Melissa was it. I could probably write a novel on how wonderful she is, but just know that if you are considering a doula please look no further, I could not possibly recommend her enough. Thank you Melissa, for all your love and support - you are a true blessing to our family.
I had been reading about Doulas and unmedicated natural births for quite a while when I went out on my search for the right person to join my birthing team. Being 22 most of my pregnancy and 23 at my baby’s birth, I was wanting a doula that provided me with confidence and the right mindset to take on an unmedicated labor and delivery. During the initial meeting at around 20 weeks I instantly felt a connection and was ready to start working with Melissa. Us being new to the whole birthing process, when Melissa came over for our prenatal visits she was very attentive. She came prepared with information and research to help me make informed decisions about my birth plan. Me being a very “Type A” personality she was wonderful at calming me down when the doctors would tell me something I didn’t want to hear. Each week we spoke regularly and I felt like she was there through the entire process. When we called her 3 weeks before my due date and told her we were being sent to the hospital she was there when we needed her. She kept us both calm and really normalized the whole process for us. She was excellent with Josh and really allowed me to fully concentrate on myself. My active labor lasted about 14 hours. By 2 am when I was ready to push she was the perfect cheerleader. At that point I was exhausted and the pain was constant but she really got me out of my own head. I’m am proud to say that with Melissa’s help I was about to have a unmedicated and basically unassisted natural birth. I honestly think she was the key that allowed this goal to become a reality for me. Anytime I tell my birth story I am always sure to stress how vital she was in the whole process. Even now 4 months later we are still in regular contact. I shared such an emotionally and physically raw moment with Melissa and I could not recommend her enough to people in search of a doula.
How wonderful is Melissa Wood? Let me start by saying that should I have a second baby, she will be the person that I call right after my husband. :) Melissa is awesome: wise, caring, supportive, encouraging, and kind. My husband and I couldn't have asked for a better person to have by our side. As most will say, my son's birth didn't necessarily go according to plan, but Melissa helped me to evaluate each obstacle and choice with knowledge, confidence, and compassion resulting in the safe, healthy, and joyful entry to the world that I wanted for my sweet boy. My family was also extremely grateful for the updates and explanations that she provided to them throughout my very long labor. Melissa checked in on us several times after we left the hospital and continued to support us with home visits and through the sharing of information and referrals for postpartum issues. Melissa is truly gifted at what she does. I am so lucky to have had her on my side during this time and to have made a true friend in the process.
It was great having Melissa as my doula. She had a friendly, relaxing demaeanor that put me at ease having my first child. She visited with me and my husband before our delivery to talk about what to expect and practice relaxation techniques. We ultimately had to have a cesearean and Melissa was there for support. Her knowledge and demeanor throughout the process was valued. I would definitely recommend her to others who want/need that extra support in the labor and delivery process.
In December of 2016, I got pregnant with my first child and Melissa was recommended to me through a friend. Throughout the entire pregnancy, she was supportive, constantly checked in on me and made sure all of my questions got answered. I ended up being a high risk pregnancy and got induced at 37 weeks. Because of my girl being my first child, I didn't have the slightest clue as to how many choices I had while making her birth plan and Melissa made sure my birth plan got put together and she made sure I understood it all. She coached me through it and still checks on me 3 months after she was born. Because of her, giving birth to my sweet daughter seemed effortless. I could not have had the same birth experience with anyone else and truly do not know what I would have done without her. I also struggled through PPD and PPA and she stood by me during those times. Not only did I recieve impeccable care from her as a doula, but I also gained a friend. Melissa is THE best and I would recommend her to anyone.
