My goodness, Heidi is a huge blessing to the service of women as a doula! Several big things came from our experience with her. My partner was included in the planning of the birth and shown how to be my primary support with breathwork, massage, nutrition and medical advocacy. (Heidi provided all these things too, but I loved that my partner was able to participate in such a meaningful way, and he did too!). She was always there to help me with my insane amount of questions about everything from eating my placenta, to pre-labor, to fibroid care. Bonus: Heidi is also trained in vaginal steaming with herbs to diminish hemorrhoids, scar tissue, postpartum weight gain, bleeding (the list goes on...). Needless to say, choosing to to work with Heidi was an invaluable decision we made, and I highly recommend her if you are in the Portland area!
Heidi was already a friend of ours when we learned our baby was on the way. She was immediately present and supportive, so it was an easy decision to ask her to be our doula.
Balancing professional and personal relationships is rarely easy, but Heidi handled all of these challenges with grace. When emotions, doubts, fears, and concerns flared, she was an excellent listener and integral to restoring balance and calm in our lives. Our experience with Heidi as our doula has brought us closer together as friends.
This was our first child, and I had always heard that pregnancy, birth, and postpartum could be tough, but was often surprised by the level of difficultly throughout this adventure. Neither of us had much experience with any of it. Heidi really helped - and continues to help - us prepare to meet the trials with her extensive knowledge, practice, and skills. I can't imagine how we could have done it without her!
Heidi is an amazing doula. She brings so much passion and pride to her calling as a doula. What really made Heidi stand out when we first met is her arsenal of information and her drive to constantly educate herself. It's quite amazing really.
I'm sure every birth story is unique but here is how Heidi contributed to our birth.
We did a home birth and we wanted to go the natural, unmedicated route. Heidi met us to see if we were a good match and almost immediately, I could tell that Heidi was it. Not only did she come across as someone with a lot of knowledge but I trusted her, her judgement, and everything else.
Our pre-natal visits were natural and untimed. She spent time getting to know us and showing both of us multiple ways of dealing with various parts of the birth. Time was not on her mind. Heidi was there to make us both comfortable. What amazed me most is that Heidi listened to everything we had to say, our concerns, wishes, thoughts, and dare I say, complaints.
She listened a lot. She absorbed everything we told her and then used it to help us when it was not the time to say things. When labor really kicked in, I felt completely at ease with Heidi. She was a welcome face and a great part of our birth team. I felt so confortable knowing that Heidi was there to stay. She wasn't watching the clock and she happily stayed from early in the morning unil 2am without even telling us that it was late.
The post-patum visit turned into many. As she came to the neighborhood, Heidi would call and see if she can stop by. She developed a relationship that turned into a respectful friendship. Heidi is no ordinary doula. She is someone who you want, not only as your doula, but as a trusted friend.
