On top of being a terrific doula, Emily is a gem of a person. Her thoroughness, balanced approach, and sincerity made her a perfect fit for my family. As first time parents, we really appreciated the three educational/prep sessions prior to birth. They were especially helpful for getting my husband and me to be specific about what we were expecting from each other, the healthcare team, and for me to articulate my hopes and preparation for birth. The eduction component was great too, a personal birth prep class!

Logistically Emily is super on top of it. She’s always available for phone call or text exchanges. She provided me with reading materials tailored to my interests and concerns. It was like having a birth librarian on hand, she sent me in the right direction for educating myself and sent me the articles and links she knew would be helpful. The intimacy of letting someone into your home and childbirth has the potential to feel awkward, but it never was with Emily. She’s the perfect balance of facts and feelings, full of empathy and the ability to navigate a hospital.

One of the best things Emily did for us was de-pressurize the situation when I wasn't very dialated and ofered the option begin an induction (my OB's preference). Emily’s way of asking questions made sure that we took time to make the decision to leave the hospital and labor at home overnight (which I'm glad I did).

Emily came back home with me, gave me stretches to encourage the baby’s descent and would have stayed as long as we asked. Back at the hospital and during labor she made sure we voiced our preferences, worked in sync with the nurses/doctor, and offered both physical and emotional comfort. She also stayed the perfect amount of time after the birth to make sure the three of us were all set. She understood how I wanted to approach birth and supported it wholly and without judgement. I’d recommend Emily to my sister if I had one!

When looking back on the pregnancy, from the beginning to weeks after birth, hiring Emily was hands down the best decision we made. Doula service seems to come so naturally to Emily and she clearly does it because she is passionate about it, which goes a long way in the quality of service she delivers. Emily was born to do this!

There was chemistry with her from the moment we met for the interview that made us just feel totally comfortable and confident in her. She was an excellent source of knowledge for us as first time parents and always made us feel like the questions we had and the things we were going through were totally normal and perfectly acceptable. She always had an answer to our questions and made us feel much more confident in ourselves.

When it came to labor and the big day, Emily was on her game. She was available to us the entire time and we had a very long labor experience. Every labor is different and has unexpected twists and turns, and ours was no exception. Emily was ready and prepared for all of them. Looking back, she was superb at being in the moment, providing the help and assistance we needed, and at the same time was able to take a step back and help US to make an informed decision. She never made any decisions for us, but was always there like an angel on our shoulder providing us with what we needed to make a decision that we would look back on afterwards and be happy with. We love her for this!

Not only is Emily an excellent Doula (it's obviously her calling!), but she became our friend in the process. It was really important for us to have someone that we were really comfortable with and got to know personally, and that happened so naturally with Emily right from the start.

We put our faith in Emily 100% and if you choose her as your Doula you will not regret it!

Where do I start? For those of you with short attention spans: HIRE HER! Emily is the most professional, accommodating, flexible, personable doula I can imagine. She brings with her no judgement or pre-conception of what your birth should be. For example, I knew there was chance I might want an epidural, and she had no problem with that. What she did, as she did with every topic or decision we faced, was send us lots of evidence-based research to help guide us. She is smart, sensitive, and never dogmatic. This was important to us because while some trusted friends had recommended we hire a doula, we weren't 100% sure what we were getting into, and had some hesitations. But once we met Emily, we were both sold, which is saying a lot, because my husband was the most hesitant of all. She was GREAT with him and they ended up being a fantastic team together.

What I remember most from our labor was the way Emily naturally started breathing big out-breaths next to me, without announcing herself, when I was starting my first BIG contractions - and I instinctively matched her breathing and relaxed. But as the labor took lots of twists and turns, I remembered one friend of mine saying she thought hiring a doula might be a waste if you didn't have a "natural" birth. In the end, our carefully crafted birth plan went out the window, and after hours of labor, we had to have a C-section. And you know what? Emily was ALL the more valuable to us in that situation, because she knew all the questions to ask, and continued to be invaluable at every step of the way.

We felt so lucky that Emily was there when our son was born, it just felt right. And then afterwards, she gave us post-partum advice and so many other perks, it's kind of crazy...to be honest, I sometimes wonder how she can sustain this level of service!

So, like I said, hire her. You won't regret it.

As soon as I met Emily, I knew she was the perfect fit for us. She had the exact blend of peer-reviewed research, comfort, support, and calm we hoped for!

We looked forward to our preparatory meetings. Emily is flexible, accommodating, and responsive. If she didn't know an answer, she knew where to find it and provided reliable resources to conduct our own research, too! We can't overstate how helpful this was.

And our birth...she was amazing. I can't overstate what a help she was. We were back and forth with so many false starts and stops over four days in the hospital (not to mention the prodromal labor for, like, two weeks prior to that), and she was always SO responsive, even in the middle of the night, and helped us step back, think through our options, and make informed decisions. Another reviewer called her "unobtrusive and utterly indispensable"--what an apt description! When the time finally came for us to call her in, she arrived immediately and spent hours with me moving through painful contractions and massaging fluid out of my feet. She provided creative pain management ideas, helped take care of my husband, and set up a peaceful, calm space for us to welcome our son. Honestly, words can't adequately describe how thoughtful and intuitive she is.

Our birth experience was challenging in ways we could not have anticipated and prepared for, but between her support during and visits after the labor and birth we were able to navigate all the surprises and feel confident in our choices. Her peaceful presence and thoughtful questions helped me begin to process everything that happened and has doubtlessly set me up for a much healthier postpartum period than would otherwise be the case (both physically and mentally, thanks to her suggestions and resources), particularly given the unique difficulties in our laboring experience. I felt ready to bond with my baby and focus on my recovery after her final home visit. We love Emily!

Words aren't enough to express just how great Emily is. When we got pregnant, a friend recommended a Doula, but we were a little skeptical/hesitant. Emily came to our home for a "meet and greet" to see if we meshed well together and to see if we wanted to work with her. After only a few minutes, we felt at complete ease with Emily and decided right away to lock her down for our due date!
The pre-natal visits were awesome because as 2 very busy soon-to-be parents, we had a lot going on. She was accommodating, super responsive and always either had an answer or knew where to find it. She always made herself available for us via phone or e-mail and we always felt supported throughout the whole pregnancy.
At 31 weeks, we found out baby was Breech and Emily helped us with all the "natural" ways to try to get a baby to turn head-down. She had great recommendations for all the different options we had. When those didn't work, she offered positive reinforcement. Next we tried an ECV and she walked us through what to expect, and supported us through that. When the ECV didn't work, she helped us process the idea of a c-section. Despite the fact that we didn't have a "natural birth" we were so lucky to have Emily with us when we went into labor. She advocated for us at the hospital and gave us great suggestions and support as we labored, waiting for an OR to become available. She accompanied us into the OR and after baby was born, she stayed with me while I got stitched up while Dad went with baby to the nursery. She was an incredible presence during those long 30 minutes while I waited to be reunited with my new Family!
Honestly, I don't know if we could've done it without Emily's support and love. When I was feeling as though I'd failed at turning the baby she responded "maybe there's a reason she is keeping her heart close to yours." We adore Emily and would be thrilled to have her on our team for Baby number 2!

There aren't enough superlatives to describe Emily's work as our doula. From the first meeting to the postpartum follow-up, she's been an absolute godsend. Her expertise is thorough, her knowledge extensive, and yet she manages to maintain a calming presence that made my partner and I fearless in the face of what can be a terrifying prospect for new parents. Emily made us both so comfortable with her and so confident in our choices that we found ourselves looking forward to our birth. She was instantly part of the team and totally intuitive. She looked after my husband so I didn't have to--making sure he took time to eat, hydrate, pee. She looked after me with her ingenious comfort measure toolbox (warm compresses, massages, aromatherapy, different positions, etc.) so my husband could simply be there at my side holding my hand. She even seemed to sense prophetically when I was thirsty and hold a cold strawful of coconut water to my mouth when I needed it most. She laughed at our (bad) jokes. She kept us buoyant. She helped us advocate for ourselves at every turn. Because of Emily, I felt I had it in me to have a natural, unmedicated birth. And I did just that.

Emily went so far above and beyond what she was contracted to do. She almost feels like part of our family now. I cannot imagine having gone through this process without her. Especially since we are very new to the area and arrived here midway through my pregnancy. Having her as a consistent caregiver made us feel anchored in a way we could not have otherwise.

If you want the perfect blend of evidence-based research and emotional support, with a little extra love thrown in (I'm thinking about her special blend of sitz herbs and her homemade belly wraps), hire Emily. She's both unobtrusive and utterly indispensable. And her groundedness made me feel that much more prepared to go do this difficult, beautiful thing.
