Where do I even begin? Melanie is amazing.

I stumbled across Melanie when I found out I was pregnant with my second child. I had a planned cesaren (breech) with my first and was passionate about finding a VBAC friendly doula to support me during my second birth. Melanie was just who I was looking for. She came and met our husband multiple times before the big day to teach us breathing exercises, how to rely on each other for comfort and support, and how to rely on Melanie as a support person during labor and birth.

Once the big day (or week) came, Melanie was there whenever I needed her. I had 48 hours of prodromal labor where she came and walked with me to help me get my contractions closer together. After battling the stomach flu during this process, I was admitted to the hospital with dehydration. As I was admitted, Melanie was there every step of the way. She was the one who truly saved my life in what could have been a traumatic delivery. She truly stepped up and went above and beyond and stepped in when my husband couldn't.

I want thank Melanie from the bottom of my heart for her incredible service, warmth, and friendship. I would recommend her to ANYONE considering hiring a doula for their labor and delivery, no matter what your wishes are for birth.

My husband and I took Bradley Method classes and felt well prepared for a natural, husband-coached birth. However, I knew that since we were first time parents and I was considered high-risk, we would really benefit from the support of someone who had experience with the labor and birth process at the Peacehealth St. John Hospital. We were grateful that Melanie was able to work with us, especially since we forgot to see if she was available until I was 36 weeks pregnant! She came to our house a few times before my due date to review our labor rehearsals, practice relaxation and pain relief techniques, and provide encouragement and reassurance. I ended up having to be induced due to hypertension and when my contractions started to get very intense at 11pm I directed my husband to “Call Melanie!” She showed up shortly thereafter and stayed with us throughout the rest of my long labor. Looking back, I loved that Melanie provided kind words of encouragement to help keep me focused, reminded me how to effectively breathe when contractions got really intense, suggested new positions to labor in, and regularly pulled out new “tricks” (i.e. massagers, aromatherapy, rebozo) from her labor bag that helped me through contractions. Melanie was also a great support to my husband. She provided him with the support and information he needed to best support me. She encouraged him to take quick breaks and made sure he had coffee and something to eat so that he could keep up his energy. Thanks to the support of Melanie and my husband, I was able to endure a 19 hour labor and give birth with no pain medication. Without Melanie’s assistance, I really doubt that it would have been such a great experience. I look forward to utilizing her services again for any future pregnancies!

Finding a doula can be tough. What is a doula? Where do they come from? What do they do? "Are you trying to replace me?!" ... Well, when we found Melanie, we were in a tight place ourselves; pregnant with our second, husband in college full time and squeezing work in, and not wanting to experience another Ceserean!  I had been educating myself on v-bacs and the Bradley method of laboring and learned of doulas through a weekend birthing class. My husband is very supportive in everything I do, but was leary of this 'doula' thing. He had this impression that I thought he should be replaced after all this supportive labor coach we'd been reading up on. He was finally convinced after the testimony of a friend, and boy did I jump on dialing that number! Only to find out that that doula was done with her training and earning full wages, which we were in no place to afford. BUT, she had a friend earning her training, Melanie! Melanie was nothing short of a life saver. I was so nervous about this birth to come up, and she was so calming.  NEVER a replacement, but ANOTHER support for this experience you're about to partake in. She educated us more about v-bacs, gave positions for my husband and I to practice together and have down in the labor room, and was so peaceful and encouraging. The atmosphere changes the second she enters the room, and all fear and apprehension are gone, left with peace. I truly do not think we would have made it without her. She has a way of bringing you and your spouse together, confidently. So much so, that we went back to her with our 3rd and 4th births as well! All successful! We love Melanie. (And if we have anymore pregnancies, we will faithfully return yet again!!)

Melanie, aka Mama K, served as our doula for both of our children (3 years old and 3 months old).  Mama K is insightful, patient, caring, and offers the perfect amount of support.  She supported us through our birth plan, which did include induction and epidural.  She is knowledgeable in fetal positing techniques and played a vital role in guiding baby #2 into birthing position.

Mama K visited our home several times before and after the birth of our children.  Before, she taught us breathing and laboring techniques and solidified our birthing plan.  After, she ensured breastfeeding was successful and post-partum healing was taking place.  She was on-call and available when we needed her and helped placate any anxiety we had.

Both our children were delivered at St. John's and with both, the staff praised Mama K's professionalism, courtesy, and support.  We most certainly reccommend her!

I was thriled with the quality of care and attention I received from Melanie!  She always came across confident, knowledgeable and compassionate.  She empowered us to "own" our birthing experience and made sure we were prepared with breathing and relaxation techniques, what to expect in the hospital, etc.  Although we were unable to have a natural birth because my twin girls shifted out of proper delivery position, she was very present and attentive after my c-section - even picked up some non-hospital dinner for my husband!  I highly recommend the doula experience -- it was personal, professional and comforting -- and would refer Melanie to anyone interested.

Melanie "Mama K" was our doula for my most recent pregnancy/delivery. This was our third child, but our first time hiring a doula. I had been very unhappy with my previous childbirth experiences. I felt like the nurses and doctors had their own agenda and weren't there to support me and my wishes. I was anxious to do what I could to have additional support for my labor and delivery this time, which is why we decided to hire a doula.

Mama K was extremely helpful and sensitive to my concerns. She helped me develop the courage to voice my own concerns to the medical staff when I needed to. She also offered many useful suggests for relaxation, exercises, and other preparations that I would have never come across on my own. Through her coaching, my husband and I felt more confident than we ever had for previous births.

When labor began, I progressed very fast and things did not go as planned... I almost didn't make it to the hospital in time! Since the baby was coming extremly quickly, I was not able to have any pain medication or use any of the relaxation techniques that we had planned. I was forced to resist pushing for a significant length of time while waiting for the doctor to arrive, which was both frusterating and scary. It was definately a difficult situation for me and stressful for my husband as well. Thankfully, Mama K was right there to coach me through it. I remember that I kept saying, "I can't do it" and she would say "Yes you can!"

I guess I would have managed somehow without her there, but I would not have wanted to! It would have been much more scary without her there to support us. Afterward, my husband kept saying, "Its a good thing Melanie was there!"

We absolutely recommend Mama K to anyone who is looking for an exceptionally talented and capable doula...
