The main reason I wanted a doula is because I did not want a cesarean section. The c-section rate in the U.S. is 33%, well above the “medically necessary” target of 10% - 15% that the World Health Organization recommends. In South Florida, where I was planning to give birth, the c-section rate is over 50%. I found it imperitive to have someone next to me who knew the system, the procedures, and my birth plan to back me up when I was going to be preoccupied, if you know what I mean!
I interviewed three doulas and chose Gloria Bauta - the best decision of my pregnancy. She was amazing to have by my side, not only during the natural birth of my son, but throughout my pregnancy. She met with me and my husband several times to answer any questions we had about my pregancy and really put me at ease. She is extremely knowledgeable, has a good sense of humor and has such warm personality! She provided me the knowledge I needed to make my own decisions without pressuring me to do things because of her beliefs or the way she would do her own pregnancy. She understands how personal, emotional and difficult it is to be a first time mom trying to do the best for her unborn son.
During the birth of my son, she coordinated with hospital staff - multiple nurses and the midwife. She held my hand during every contraction and told me I was doing amazing. My husband was rooting me on and telling me I was a rock star. I couldn't have done it without them. Well, I could have, but it would have been a completely different experience. I have such fond memories of that day (and my entire pregnancy) and that's because of Gloria.
Gloria attended the birth of my second son, Nicolás, which was a VBAC delivery (Vaginall Birth After C-section). My first baby's labor ended in c-section, and I didn't have a doula at that moment. Now I know that having one could have made events go completely different. I wanted to have a VBAC and my doctor required having a doula. I selected Gloria and having her by my side did all the difference, and I was successful with my VBAC.
My husband, Marcos, and I thank Gloria for everything she did that day. My labor was only 5 hours. When Gloria arrived at my apartment, my contractions where every 2 to 3 minutes and the first thing I told her was that I wanted to leave to the hospital. Gloria was supportive of what I wanted, and we left to the hospital. With her words of encouragement, guidance, and comfort measures she took with me, she gave me the strength to be more calm, focused and cope with the contractions. Gloria made our labor and delivery very memorable and special, and she will always be part of a very special moment in our life, that help me heal what I couldn’t do with my first baby. I will recommend Gloria to every woman that needs a doula!
Having Gloria as my doula was the best investment I made in preparing for my birth. She was there with me every step of the way. In the weeks leading up to the delivery she met with me numerous times and answered every question I had and help me prepare for the kind of birth I wanted. During labor I felt so much more at ease and comfortable because of her.
Gloria is extremely knowledgeable about birth and pregnancy, including nutrition, health, and exercise. Even more importantly, she is very warm and caring, and I trust her completely. She helped me to learn so much and prepare well for birth even though I was not able to have the natural birth that I planned. Thanks to her help through my induction and labor, I was in great hands. The induction took more than a day, but thanks to her skillful navigation of my challenging hospital experience and labor, I was able to have a vaginal birth. If she was not present I am fairly certain that I would have been pressured into having a c-section. That says it all. Gloria is amazing! <3
Gloria was more than just a doula to me she was a friend and guardian. As a first time mom about to go into labor I was so scared. I felt the moment I got to the hospital like a car in a NASCAR pit, things were going fast, but once Gloria arrived I had a huge sense of safety and comfort come over me. She set the mood and put me in a relax state info mind and kept me in focus. She reminded me to breathe and relax. Had she not been there I don't think I could've done it.
My boyfriend and I were interviewing doulas until we met Gloria. The second she walked in the room, I knew she was the one. Gloria has a very peaceful, tranquil and nurturing energy about her. What I was also looking for, was someone who has experience in all types of labors and births, which she happens to have more than enough of!
I was planning on a home birth but when the day finally came, there were complications and had to go to the hospital for a C Section. Gloria was there every step of the way and always did extra things to make me feel safe. Under that very stressful situation Gloria dimmed the lights and used aromatherapy and massage to make me feel better. She also coached my boyfriend on what to do to make me relax as much as possible. In the operation room when I couldn't even think straight, Gloria was busy taking pictures of my baby as he came into the world. I know that my labor and son's birth would not have been the same, had she not been there! I've told her that she does what she is meant to do! I will choose her again if we have more children.
