I'm so glad Alicia was my doula for the birth of my fourth baby. Upon meeting her the first time she was very pleasant. She asked a lot of questions about me and my past births. She really took the time to understand my goals for this birth and also listen to my fears. As my due date got closer, she was really good about checking in with me via text and sent uplifting and encouraging messages. I had a feeling that this labor would be really fast and she may not make it to me in time to give me the support I was seeking. I was right about labor being quick, but she did make it and met my husband and I at the hospital. She was a force of calm, peace, and reassurance that I needed to accomplish my goals of an unmedicated birth. She knew the right things to say and helped me stay relaxed as contractions got more intense. She stayed after the birth to make sure we were doing well and followed up with me a few days postpartum. I would recommend her to any woman wanting a doula!
Up until about 2 days before I delivered my second child I thought that I was going to deliver him via epidurial. I had always wanted to do a natural birth, but I didn't feel like I had the full support of my husband. I finally was able to convince my husband to take Alicia's Birth Preparation Service just as information that we could use for my delivery even if I was going to use an epidural. During the whole class Alicia was so understanding and knowledgeable about everything. There were a few things that I wanted more information about and instead of making me look it up, she went ahead and sent me the information. Not only did she understand her stuff, she was able to help give me the confidence that I needed to be able to deliver naturally. Like I said earlier, my main drawback of being able to deliver naturally was not having the full support of my husband. After the class was over and learning a few techniques my husband told me that if I really wanted to do it naturally he would support me. That was HUGE in my eyes. Not only did she help me feel confident with my body's ability, but she helped my husband see that I could do it. I was able to have a very successful natural birth a few days after that class. I credit a lot of that success to Alicia in giving me AND my husband the confidence that we needed to get it done. I could not recommend Alicia enough! She was absolutely amazing!!
I would like to begin by saying that I have and would recommend Alicia Pritchard as a doula in a heartbeat!
We decided to use a doula very late in our pregnancy, as in 3 or so days before my scheduled induction. I was a little unsure of the decision, as was my husband, but we really wanted a vaginal birth after having a cesarean with our first baby and thought we could use as much support as we could get. The doctor was anticipating a large baby and explained that a VBAC could be difficult. After having a conversation with Alicia over the phone, I felt more comfortable with the idea of having a doula. I explained my goals, how my ideal birth would go and asked many questions that were answered very knowledgably.
When the day of my induction came Alicia was more supportive than I anticipated. She was intuitive about how to communicate with a woman in labor. She was calm, reassuring and caring. She taught my husband different methods to help me through labor. She communicated and worked well with the hospital staff as well. When the pain started to get unbearable and was putting added stress on my body, she was supportive of my choice to get an epidural. This was important to me because it really emphasized to me that her objective was to help in any way she could to help us reach our goal. Alicia realized that our ultimate goal was to have a healthy baby born vaginally.
During pushing, Alicia was amazing! This is when I needed her the most. With her teaching, coaching and assistance, I was able to push for 2 ½ long hours! The result was a beautiful 8lb 12oz baby boy!
About a week after my delivery, Alicia made a home visit. She made sure I was recovering well, the baby was breastfeeding well and dropped off pictures of our birth.
I am so grateful for this birth experience and a large part of that is due to Alicia. She was a blessing to our family and we are using her again for our baby due in 8 weeks!
