As new parents my Wife and I were not quite sure what to expect going into the pregnancy. We were nervous to navigate the experience on our own since we knew we wanted a birth plan more catered to our beliefs and needs but still wanted a hospital birth. From our first meeting with Susanah we knew that she was the right doula for us. Susanah did an amazing job of listening and providing pertinent information to guide us to make the best decision for ourselves and our baby. She was incredibly supportive and was always available. She helped us create a birth plan that we felt comfortable with. When the day came and my Wife went into labor Susanah was immediately available. She arrived at our house ready and provided the most amazing support we could have asked for. Her experience and knowledge of pregnancies allowed us to ask questions to gain reassuarance about anything we were worried about. Her encouragement throughout our laboring process was nothing short of perfect. Her words were concsie and empowering and easy for my Wife to follow during contractions and pushing. Her energy, enthusiasm, and care for us never weigned throughout the entire process beginning to end. She clearly cares about the work that she does and it's apparent she is meant to be doing this work. We could not imagine going through this process without her. I would recommend Susanah to anyone whether they are going to be a new parent or they've had children before.
As soon as I sat down to write about my experience with Susanah, I teared up. How can I put my feelings in just 2000 characters? The birth of my son was liberating, empowering, and transformative...and I really don't think it would have changed my life the way it did without Susanah. I decided to hire a doula very late in the game. I'd spent the entire pregnancy planning a homebirth but somehow blanked on the fact that I needed a doula. This was my 3rd baby and I had doula's for the first 2 but for some reason, I thought I didn't need one this time. I was wrong.
At 36 weeks, I set out to find a doula. For starters, Susanah responded to my email inquiry promptly. After our first meeting, I knew she was the one. I had 2 other interviews set-up but I canceled them after I meet Susanah. She has so much experience and she just "gets it." During that first meeting, she told me that after giving birth, I should feel like a Goddess. Her words were very empowering.
Up until the day I gave birth, Susanah texted and called to check on me. She gave good suggestions when I shared how I felt and she made sure that I was prepared for my homebirth. On Labor Day, Susanah arrived and she was ready. She had a "bag of tricks" that included props for labor...she even had a pump for my birthing ball in there! My labor was very slow...my contractions were irregular and I was getting worried. She and my midwife said it was probably a positioning issue. In my vulnerability, I asked Susanah what would happen if he didn't turn. She looked me in my eyes and said, "He will!" She gave me some suggestions to help with positioning and things sped up fast! An hour later, I had my boy in the water at home. I felt like a Goddess, just like Susanah said.
Before she left, she made sure I was fed, clean, and breastfeeding my baby. She was a rock for me postpartum as well. I'm eternally grateful for Susanah!
It's hard to find the words to describe how much having Sue "join our family" for the birth of our second son impacted our experiene of bringing him into the world. From the first time I met her I felt comforted where I'd been feeling intense anxiety anticipating this birth. I had an emergency C-section for my first son after being induced and was completely under for his birth, waking up to ask where he was. Sue and I discussed my wanting to achieve a VBAC for this birth, my OB (who was very supportive of my having a VBAC), hospital chioice etc. and she helped me prepare (even calling the hospital before we officially began working with her to find out all she could about how they handle VBACs).
We put together our "plan" (with our knowing for the second that anything could happen) and mentally and emotionally prepared together for me to (hopefully) go into labor naturally and labor at home as long as possible. Ultimately we arrived at the hospital 8cm dilated and I continued to labor with Sue and my husband for a few hours before I gave birth to my son vaginally, unmedicated. Sue was a huge part of that being possible, her comforting presence and support made us feel confident despite the hospital environment and when they wanted to put in an epidural (so that I wouldn't have to be put under in case of an emergency delivery) she suggested they put it in without the medication and they said yes, allowing me to have the unmedicated birth I wanted (and push the baby out fast enough that a C-section wasn't required when his heart rate dropped).
Sue has a warm, radiant and incredibly positive energy. She was consistently able to help me keep perspective when I felt challenged or worried leading up to his birth, always knowing what I would need to hear. Having her with us through it all allowed me to approach his arrival with positivity and confidence, she is an absolute gem.
