I completed a year-long internship with an OBGYN where I saw over 100 births, both vaginal and C-section. It was this internship that solidified my passion for birth and working with families to support them during this process. With a Masters Degree in Somatic Counseling, I am comfortable with and excited to help you navigate the rollercoaster of emotions that can often accompany labor, delivery, and new parenthood. I am committed to supporting my clients in making the choices that best suit their family and specific circumstances. I am particularly passionate about working with LGBTQ and non-traditional families. I am in a same sex marriage and am acutely aware of how heteronormative and ostracizing the process of pregnancy and birth can be for families and individuals in the LGBTQ community. Just as every birth is different, every birth plan can be different. I believe there is no right way for someone to deliver and will support you in whichever choices you make. Do you know you want an epidural? Great. Hoping to go natural? Wonderful. Not sure? We can talk about it!
Melissa is fantastic, she was so very helpful and I'm so grateful we decided to work with her! My husband and I interviewed a handful of doulas and agreed Melissa would be a great match for what we we're looking for. Melissa brings a calming and knowledgeable presence to the room.
The meetings we had before the birth were helpful in knowing what to expect, Melissa showed us different coping techniques that she or my husband could utilize during labor. Her sense of humor aligned with ours made it much easier to laugh while I was in active labor at the hospital.
Her checkins with me were great, before the birth she asked how my midwife/ Drs appts went. It was great to have her so plugged in in the weeks leading up to the birth. Communicating with her was easy.
I went into labor unexpectedly early and my husband was out of town, I was extremely grateful to have Melissa there with me (he did end up making it!) I had a long labor at the hospital, 24 hrs with 5 hrs of pushing. Melissa helped me through all of it, she really listened to what I needed and prompted others to help support me. Melissa tracked my husband flight home and texted with him so I could just try to relax and labor in the tub, she helped calm my moms nerves as well!
I felt very supported by her and she was great at suggesting different things to help me while in labor. While I was pushing she held one of my legs which ended up being hours, I looked to her for her opinion when the hospital staff suggested something and I wasn't sure and she would give her opinion, which was nice. She did take some photos of the birth, and while this is secondary to supporting me and my husband it was nice to have some of those moments captured. She was truly excited to be there and was such a strong supporter of my needs during the birth of our beautiful baby girl, Annabelle.
We are very grateful for her!
We had Melissa as a doula during the birth of our first child.
We learned and trained as much as we could before, but nothing could have prepared us for the reality of birth and I don't know how we would have done it without her. She was an invaluable support both physically and emotionally throughout. She rubbed my hands and feet to help me relax between contractions, had ice chips on the ready and helped guide me through transition and pushing. She stood in when my husband needed a break and got food and supplies whenever either of us needed.
I had hoped to have an intervention free birth and she encouraged and commended me for that choice. Even more importantly, when the time came for intervention, she validated and cheered that decision as well. She helped normalize an extraordinary situation and got me to laugh when I didn't think it was possible.
Melissa's tears at the first sight of our daughter exemplified her commitment and love of both her clients and the birthing experience.
From the bottom of all three hearts (and all six Happy Feet), Thank You!
