I was on the fence about using a doula at first, so I thought it might be too late when I started searching for one. I’m so glad I happened to contact Lauren! I was initially impressed with how professional and responsive she was, emailing right away and calling for a chat and setting up a meeting really soon after I first emailed her. She was sensitive to our circumstances and worries, and really seemed to cater her support to our needs. She helped keep me calm when I needed it and gave me the encouragement to help me through the hard parts. Even when I was “in the zone” I could hear her voice in my ear at just the right moments, coaching me through the birth. She created a really nice atmosphere at the hospital, took great pictures of our birth, and all the nurses loved her! I really appreciated that she never pressured us to do things a certain way, just gave us all the information and helped us have the experience we were looking for, including helping my husband and mom feel effective and stay focused during the delivery. She is a warm, caring person and I’m so glad to know her!
We loved having Lauren as our Doula! she spent extra time with us on prenatal information & laboring comfort measures. She was always available to us whenever we had a question big or small! As first time parents we could not have gone through pregnancy, birth and postpartum without her support! Even through our fast and furious labor/birth Lauren was with us the whole time and helped us to make the right call to get to the hospital just in the knick of time for our son to be born! We knew we would get along with Lauren because of her awesome personality, she’s the perfect mix of what I like to call a realistic/granola doula ;). I’m a nurse by profession so I respect why some births need intervention, but I also have a healthy distrust of how unnecessarily medicalized birth can be. I knew Lauren would help me to achieve my desired plan to give birth as naturally as possible, but I also knew that if I needed an intervention Lauren would support me unconditionally. We decided to give birth at MCV with the Midwives who all had wonderful things to say about Lauren, which only solidified that we made the right choice!! She will definetly be our doula for all of our subsequent pregnancies!!
Lauren was our doula for the birth of our second son in July. We did not have a doula for our first labor and delivery. Having Lauren to rely on before, during, and after the delivery was a tremendous relief. Everyone should have someone who’s so calm and supportive to help guide them when they are in such a vulnerable position. She has a great balance of being unintrusive yet advocating for your needs at times when you may feel that you can’t advocate for yourself. My first labor and delivery was traumatic for my husband and I, and though we wanted another child, going through that process again was very daunting. I’m happy to say that this experience, though challenging, has left us feeling peaceful and content. Much of this is due to Lauren’s guidance. We highly recommend her!
What does a doula do? My husband and I weren't exactly sure when we made the decision to hire Lauren. During my challenging 32 hour labor we discovered the answer, a doula does a little bit of everything and her role changes depending on your needs. Lauren was there to help us with the big decisions like when to go to the hospital and understanding the interventions that were being suggested by the hospital staff. But she also was right there for the little stuff I wasn't even thinking about because I was too busy being in labor. Cold compresses magically appeared on my forehead, there always seemed to be a straw in front of me with her encouraging me to stay hydrated, she made sure that my husband got breaks and told him to rest too. Lauren's knowledge, understanding, compassion, and humor turned out to be priceless to myself and my husband. My labor did NOT go according to my birth plan, but Lauren's support and guidance through the process allowed my birth to still be an empowering experience.
Lauren was amazing. My wife struggles a bit with anxiety and after already having 1 pregnancy result in a miscarriage her anxiety was a bit ramped up. However, Lauren did an excellent job calming her, and myself, down. We were induced so we were in L&D for around 2.5 days and Lauren's presence kept us from going crazy. She helped my wife with not only pain management but also acting as a sounding board for decisions and concerns throughout her labor. As the person in our family not having the baby I often felt like I am unable to help my wife since so many steps in the pregnancy process are internal but Lauren did a very good job of making me feel like part of the team, pointing out things I could help with, giving me breaks to get a bite to eat and just being a sounding board for my concerns.
I think many people believe that hiring a doula or using a midwife to deliver a baby means the mother will not use drugs or get a C-section but that was not the case. Lauren was concerned that our birth experience was what we wanted. She encouraged us to create a birth plan and helped us and the hospital stick to it as much as possible. Of course no plan goes as you would hope and my wife and I were forced to make a decision between lots of extra laboring after 30 some odd hours of it or a C-section and we decided on the later. Lauren helped us immensely in talking through this very difficult decision and supported us fully even though a C-section was not on our birth plan. It ended up being the best decision and we were rewarded with a little baby girl.
Before and after the birth Lauren and My Birth were very helpful with classes helping us know what to expect, yoga to help my wife with pregnancy pains and lactation advice. We hope to have another baby at some point and we both know our first call would be to Lauren. I cannot say enough on how helpful and special she is to us.
I am so grateful for Lauren for she was a great support from beginning ( 2 weeks before delivery) all the way to the end (36 hours of labor finishing in c-section plus post partum). She got to know me, my excitement, and my worries well. She helped fuel my excitement when it wavered and she helped me combat my worries by shareing a plethora of resources which helped me feel more confident and prepared for labor. She was so in tune with me during labor. She is knowledgeable and is a forward thinker, anticipating my needs and having many tools in her toolbox that helped me through. She had a steady but calming presence that made me feel I could just keep going and that I was doing great though everything in me felt otherwise. She offered lots of position options ie shower, dancing with partner, and the tub. She even encouraged my husband to pray for me which was at the Most perfect time when my faith in the process was wavering. She massaged my back, my feet and pretty much anywhere for like hours which helped ease some of the back labor I was having. She was steadfast, enduring, and I am forever indebted to her. She helped me through my c-ection by using aromatherapy and just her being there by my side made me feel better about having to have surgery. After I was as able to return home she visited me and helped me process and see the beauty in all that transpired during and after my labor and she probably doesn' even know that she did. I would highly recommend her to anybody who is considering a doula you will not be disappointed.
I can not recommend Lauren enough!! My husband and I were immediately drawn to her calm but confident demeaner and the way she addressed my fears and encouraged this first time mama! Since this was our first baby we had no idea what we were doing and Lauren was tremendously helpful in providing lots of information to prepare us for both natural labor and what to do if things don't go as planned. She felt much more like a knowledgeable friend than someone we hired and I was so grateful to have her support before and during labor...but the best part was how amazing she was afterwards!! She went above and beyond to make sure I felt cared for and supported in the vulnerable days and weeks after giving birth and as I began breastfeeding. She was endlessly patient and caring and checked in with me so many times...and continued to pursue me even when I didn't have the energy to follow up with her. I had no idea how helpful or important this would be for me!! Lauren is so gifted at making people feel safe, comfortable, and at helping to advocate for your birth plan without ever making you feel pressured! She is strong but gentle, trustworthy, considerate, and the best listener! She is the BEST!!! Hopefully we will have more children in the future and I'm already thinking about how I'll need to hire her the day I find out I'm pregnant to secure her for my date!!

Prior to birth, Lauren provided information and tips on everything pregnancy and newborn related-- from nutrition and pre-labor exercises to laboring to breastfeeding.
Lauren made a home visit where she helped us become comfortable with the idea of laboring at our house as much as possible before heading to the hospital. This included techniques to minimize pain, and identifying rooms in which we may want to work through contractions. Lauren also got to know our dog, Sam.
The day of Liam’s birth, Lauren was available via text, phone, and, when the time came, in person. She talked us through numerous questions (Is this it?!), and once at our home, helped Damon and I cope with more intense contractions and getting to the hospital.
At VCU Hospital, Lauren helped contribute to making our delivery room cozy and comfortable. I have no doubt the lighting, music, and aromas supported our relatively quick labor. In addition, Lauren was on hand to provide encouragement to both me and my husband, assist with massage and comfort, and support the midwife and nurse. In addition, Lauren snapped beautiful photos of the birth.
Post-birth, Lauren was once again on deck to answer questions, give tips and advice, and offer encouragement. When we had a dehydration scare with our little one, Lauren was in constant communication, making a home visit and recommending a wonderful lactation consultant.
We were more than pleased with Lauren’s Doula services. She helped us accomplish the quick, natural, drug-free delivery of our 9 pound 1 ounce first child, using her knowledge of the birthing process, massage and comfort techniques, and positivity. Her kind and calm demeanor, optimism, and professionalism were a bonus! Thank-you, Lauren!
