Lesley attended both of my children's births and we were so incredibly grateful for her support and expertise. The first was a planned c section with a breech baby... That we only found out about a few days before. Lesley walked us through the entire c section process (physically, emotionally and mentally) so that we were 100% prepared, and we were! The second birth was hoping to be a VBAC, and thankfully ended up being one thanks to Lesley!! We are convinced that her support was what made both experiences as smooth as they could be, under such differnt circumstances. Despite everything (c section, epidural, etc) Lesley never 'judged' decisions or forced decisions. She talked us though everything and made us feel so empowered in the process. From the teachers chair, to the delivery room, to the post partum meeting, Lesley was THE most helpful doula we could have ever asked for! Thank you Lesley for all your help, and for pouring you heart and soul into everything you do!! Xox
I am forever grateful to Lesley for her incredible care and attentiveness, both during and after my pregnancy. Lesley's calming presence was essential during the delivery of my baby, and her years of experience and sharing of wisdom were so reassuring to my husband and me. What makes her doula care so special is her ability to balance intuitions while possessing incredible communication skills and a wonderful rapport with health care workers, nurses, doctors, and interns, as well as families who are often under stress and required to make quick decisions. In my particular case she helped me a great deal in terms of managing pain and her visit after the delivery and sharing of breastfeeding tips as well as support of my own wellness was also helpful in those early days. I have never met anyone with such a strong sense of vocation, whose compassion and presence will forever be part of my first memories of our new life as a family.
We have now had the pleasure of working with Lesley through the birth of both of our children. Her wisdom and gentle presence guided us as we learnt to trust ourselves and our intuition. Through each of our pregnancies she supported us and our needs by responding with love. Words truly cannot express what she has done for our family. Thank you!
I feel truly blessed to have had Lesley as a doula. From the beginning, I felt my dauther's birth was directly affected in the best of ways because of Lesley. Being that this was my first birth, I was extremely nervous about the pain I might experience in labor. Lesley spoke so passionately and thoughtfully about giving birth that I began to feel excited abou the experience instead of afraid. I felt she had a wealth of wisdom that helped throughout my pregnancy. Most importantly, she encouraged me to trust my instincts, something that made a huge difference during my daughter's birth.
All of this would have been a gift in and of itself, but things took a turn at 37 weeks. My blood pressure shot up, and I was informed I was at risk for pre-eclampsia. I was told I would need to have an emergency induction. I'm quite certain under different circumstances, my husband and I would have completely panicked. Instead, Lesley acknowledged the seriousness of the situation while still encouraging me to realize my daughter's birth could still be very beautiful. During the birth, I felt confident and secure, in large part because Lesley was there. More importantly, I trusted myself to advocate on my behalf and was grateful when Lesley also advocated for me. I have never had a more powerful experience than giving birth. I believe without a doubt that if Lesley had not been there, I might instead have felt powerless, vulnerable and weakened. I am deeply grateful for the part she played in my daughter's birth. The experience has changed me forever in the best of ways.
As most newly pregnant women can admit, I was scared about delivering my first baby. I knew that I wanted to deliver my baby in a hospital, but I wanted the experience to be as natural and calm as possible. After much reading and researching, I decided that having a Doula would be helpful to reassure both me and my husband during this pregnancy and especially the delivery.
After our first meeting with Lesley, I knew we had made the right decision. Her warmth, calmness and knowledge all quickly put us at ease. When my labour started, Lesley was available all day. When I felt it was time to go the hospital, Lesley came to meet us at home and accompany us to the hospital. Our delivery was long and Lesley stayed by our sides for the whole time. She spoke up for my right to labour at my pace, even on a busy night at the hospital. She got me jell-o. She rubbed my back. She held my hand. My husband and I felt safe and comfortable with Lesley, even as the nurses and doctors rotated through their schedules all day and night. We felt that we had someone there looking out for us.
Lesley’s post-partum visits were comforting at a time when so much was new with our daughter. Her knowledge of support groups and consultants for post-partum issues were so appreciated and helpful. I knew I could contact her anytime. When we found out we were expecting our second child, our first call after our families to share the news was to Lesley. How happy we were that she was free this time too!
Lesley was a part of our family for two special moments in our lives and I cannot recommend her enough. When I learn that a friend is expecting, I always recommend contacting Motherwit and booking a doula. Hopefully they can have the good fortune to work with Lesley also.

I could not have hoped for a more positive birth experience, and that was largely thanks to Lesley. She was so great at providing my husband and I with everything we needed during my labour. Her mere presence was so calming and supportive, I think of her as a birth fairy!
I did not have a doula present during my first labour, and the difference was night and day. During my first labour, although my (very supportive!) husband was there, I felt scared, alone, and unconfident about my ability to endure the pain and have an epidural-free labour (as I had wanted).
The second time around, with Lesley there, I felt like I was properly accompanied, supported and cared for by someone who has the necessary background to do so. With the proper support, I felt empowered and was able to have the natural labour I had hoped for. Lesley took the time to get to know me forehand during our prenatal meetings, so I felt very comfortable having her with us when the time came.
I feel so fortunate to have had her with me, and I urge anyone who is interested in having a doula present during their labour to contact her.
"Pregnant for my first time, so clueless as to what to expect, I knew my husband and I needed guidance and knowledge. Lesley and the team at motherWit did such an incredible job of laying out the facts of childbirth with humour and warmth they opened our eyes and prepared us in ways we would never have figured out on our own. Then to have Lesley present at the birth, guiding us through a most unpredictable process was invaluable. Her wise clarity helped immeasurably in a moment where my life took such a tectonic shift-and she sure kept my husband calm! Thank you MotherWit!" Amy Millan
Hiring Lesley was the single best decision we made in preparing for our son's birth. She expertly supported us through a long hospital birth that thanks to her, we remember as a wonderful and peaceful experience. Lesley was humourous, respectful, discreet, warm, loving, and above all, a consummate profesionnal. We would hire her again in a heartbeat.
Lesley was our doula for the intense hospital birth of our twin boys. Our baby b was footling breech and the doctor (who was not my OB) was nervous. A natural birth was important to me, but of course the safety of my babies was most important to me. Lesley helped me and my husband navigate the confusing world of a higher risk birth in the hospital, while maintaining some sense of my own power and choice in the whole crazy whirl of it all -- many doctors and nurses, constant fetal monitoring, placing an epidural without using it for baby a, vaginal breech extraction of baby b.... Lesley was a calm, wise, caring presence throughout. And perhaps most importantly for me, she came to our home after and sat with me while I breast fed my newborns and debriefed. Lesley helped me claim the power in what I had done, birthing my sons. As my doula, Lesley provided the continuity of care and perspective that I had received from midwives in my two previous natural births but that had been otherwise lacking in my high risk twin pregnancy. Despite having a wonderful OB, the system is not set up for continuity, nor does the system care much for my emotional experience of birth. Lesley cares. And as her client, I felt cared for as she helped me process and talk about my mostly natural, but very intense and quite medicalized twin birth. I really needed her knowledge and support during labour. Her presence, experience and knowledge allowed my husband to just focus on supporting me during labour, not navigating the hospital medical system. And after the birth, I really, really needed that caring, supportive debriefing to help me sort through my feelings about the birth and come out mama-side feeling strong and brave and powerful.
Lesley was my doula at my second birth and wow, what a difference her presence made to the whole experience! I didn't think I needed the services of a doula at my first because I was homebirthing with midwives, but her presence was the key to a relaxed, happy, trusting birth experience! Thank you, Lesley, for supporting me during that amazing experience!
Lesley was present at the birth of our two children and we are grateful to her for being there with us during those incomparably special times. Her assistance during my pregnancy and labour were truly invaluable. We could not have made it through the difficult birth of our firstborn without her - she reassured us, helped us understand the medical options before us and provided comfort, security and humour throughout. She is a remarkable presence in the delivery room - I recommend Lesley wholeheartedly and am privileged to have had her care during both births.
Hiring Lesley was an excellent and worthwhile decision for us for the birth of our first child. Lesley is knowledgeable, insightful, respectful, and caring, and truly helped both my husband and I through our first birthing experience - both before, during, and after the event. Working with her again recently has also been a pleasure, and has given us a sense of security as we wait for the arrival of our next child. I would highly recommend her, and doula services in general for those planning to birth in any evironment.
I cannot fully express the nature of what Lesley did for us througout my pregnancy and birth. She is elemental; she radiates grace, acceptance, and knowledge. She manages to create a space of calm whether she's responding to a hasty text message, answering a panicked middle-of-the-night phonecall, or rubbing your back during a contraction. My birth was traumatic because of a rough situation that only got rougher, but it would have been many degrees worse without that amazing space Lesley created for me, my husband, and my baby; she helped us to confront and overcome a harsh reality with as much grace and joy as possible. She had knowledge at her fingertips that helped me not once, but many times, and she imbued me with the confidence to advocate for myself and for my baby in an uncomfortable milieu. I may not have gotten my perfect birth, but I got my perfect labour thanks to Lesley's insight, patience, and love.
My wife and I share the honor of having had Lesley as our Birth Doula. Her presence during our son’s birth was truly empowering and the support and guidance she provides is priceless. She’s a well renowned Doula and we highly recommend her.
We also took Pre-natal classes (Birth Essentials) at Lesley’s MotherWit Doula Centre (NDG). It was a comfortable setting with other couples, and very insightful.
I was blessed to have Lesley at the birth of my daughter. I had a C-section with my oldest daughter and was really hoping for a VBAC (vaginal birth after C-section). Lesley recommended books to read so that my labour could be as natural as possible - while also being open to the possibility that I might change my mind and need an epidural. She said the most important thing was a healthy mommy and healthy baby - and that sometimes, natural was best, and sometimes, a very medicalized birth is what is needed. I really felt safe with her - I knew I would be supported in whatever I chose to do. I also knew she had a lot of experience in the birthing room so that while she is not a nurse, midwife, or doctor, she could advocate for me if I needed something or something was not going well.
During the labour, having her in the room was very reassuring. She knew when to back away, when to step in, and when to ask the other people who were there supporting me to be there with me. She would make gentle suggestions - like taking a bath and resting when I needed that and lying down or changiing positions when labour seemed to slow down. She was the one who I trusted to say that now was the time to stop messing around and start really pushing.
In my daughter's birth story, I wrote:
"After my "nap" on the bed, the contactions began to pick up so I stood up again and now Lesley had me "dancing my baby down". I also started letting my inner lioness out during contractions."
My friend, who accompanied me (she is from Vancouver) said: "Lesley smelled like patchouli-Commercial-Drive-home and was better than having a sleeping cat in the room for calm."
I do not plan to have any more children, but if I did, I would want Lesley there with me - and I hope I have someone who was trained by her when my own daughters give birth.
Lesley is extremely knowledgeable and helpful before, during and after your delivery. She was my doula during my second child's birth and I would not hesitate to use her again for future births. Lesley is there with you every step of the way giving you help and support in any form you might need. I have nothing but praise for Lesley and recommend her for anyone who will be giving birth!!
