Stacie Loughrin

I hired Mary Susan to be my doula for my 4th baby. I didn't have a doula with my first three births, but I wish I would have! My fourth pregnancy was emotionally challenging, and I knew I needed someone in my corner that could cheer me on, and be there for me emotionally. Mary Susan was so attentive to my needs and feelings throughout the entire pregnancy and delivery. I knew I could call or text her at any time and she would be there with an encouraging word and to lift my spirits.

When I went into labor, I called her over when I was still in early labor, just because I knew she would be a calming presence. I was having a home birth, so she arrived in the early hours of the morning. We talked, and she helped me do some exercises to encourage labor to get going. When the kids woke up, we all had donuts for breakfast, and then the two of us went on a long walk around the block. It was such a fun, peaceful time! We headed home when I felt like contractions were starting to pick up. She and my husband took turns rubbing my back, offering me food and water, and offering encouragement. They both noticed my emotional cues, and quietly called the midwife. When the midwife arrived, I was in active labor and needed to be alone. They respected my decision, and I labored alone for a while in the bath tub. An hour later I was in transition. I started crying and Mary Susan showed me a picture of the ultrasound and started reading my affirmations and praying over me while my husband rubbed my back. I felt an instant peace and just minutes later felt the need to push. In just four minutes, I guided my son out and into his father's hands.

Having Mary Suan there to witness such an intimate event was one of the best choices I could have made. I am so grateful for the love, kindness, and encouragement that she showed,  not only to me, but to my entire family. I am so thankful that she was a part of that special day!
