Amanda was a phenomenal resource and comfort to me during pregnancy and labor. I was on the fence on whether to hire a doula at all, until I met Amanda at a networking event and saw how knowledgeable she is on a number of topics- positions for labor, breastfeeding, hospital medications and procedures, etc. Her pre-labor visits were fun and brought up topics my husband and I didn't know to ask about. She was great in keeping my husband involved in the birthing preparation process- not taking over but instead just helping him be more effective. Amanda was there for my labor even though it ended up coinciding with a pre-planned vacation (a scenario we'd discussed in advance), and it was a huge comfort to have her in the room! She was also able to better explain some of the choices the nurse was giving me (ex: petocin) which helped my decision making process. She even came and visited our family after the birth, and offered a couple quick and highly effective suggestions to improve my breastfeeding. She continuously provided links to more information on topics I asked about, and local support resources.
Overall I loved working with Amanda and I'm sure you will too!
We were very skeptical about getting a doula. With the expenses of a new baby it seemed like a luxury we couldn't afford. So, when I asked my birth instructor if she knew anyone who could help us without charging an arm and a leg she put out feelers and connected me with Amanda at Hatch SD. Amanda came over and I felt an immediate connection. She is very balanced between offering information, practical help and mental/emotional support. I wanted a natural birth with no meds and we came up with a full birth plan. I even wanted to labor at home in the tub for a while. At 36 weeks we found out our little girl wasn't flipping and was breech. Amanda set us up with multiple specialists trying to help me to get her to flip. Our little girl decided she wanted to stay put but the way she was in utero it was very dangerous to give birth naturally. We ended up scheduling a csection. Amanda offered to void the contract but I decided to have her stay and assist us through the csection. She was AMAZING. My entire family loved her and she was amazing support for me. She helped me stay calm through several major issues through the csection. Afterwards she stayed to make sure I got settled. I am so thankful to Amanda. She made my birth extra special and really helped me process loosing the opportunity for a natural birth and accepting the csection. Thank you Amanda.
I was referred to Amanda Hawthorne by another doula. I felt a referral from one doula to another spoke volumes so I felt I MUST meet her!
By the time I met Amanda I had already interviewed 3 others. I hadn't felt a connection with the others so I kept searching for the ONE! When I met Amanda her kind eyes + calm demeanor made me comfortable. I knew immediately I wanted her support at my birth.
Amanda proved to be of great support to me. She was as communicative, resourceful and as available to me as I needed. I appreciated having someone a phone call away to answer my questions should something come up.
For one of our appointments, Amanda came to my house to learn about the of birth we wanted. I went into labor the day before our following meet. It was late that evening when my water broke. During a class I took(Hypnobirthing) I learned that often times contractions wont start for hours. That being said, I decided to go to sleep:) I spoke to Amanda that following morning + told her about my progression. She felt it was a good idea that we go to the hospital sooner then later because the baby wasn't as active as he normally was. I had her meet us at the hospital after we checked in.
During my delivery Amanda helped me get in different laboring positions to find relief and to get more comfortable. She massaged me, used cold wash cloths, supported my back while I sat on the birthing ball + did whatever I felt I needed. Having her there made me more comfortable + was a great support to my husband also. Her presence gave him the freedom to get out of the room when he needed or take a call for work. It also made me more comfortable asking her to support me in some ways and then asking him to support me in other ways.
Amanda made my unmediated, natural child birth possible. She supported us in having what I consider to be the perfect birth. I would definitely recommend her + use her should we ever decide to grow our family.
Amanda was my doula durinb surrogacy pregnancy and labor and she was beyond amazing. I dont think I could ever say enough about her, she exceeded my expectations in what a doula is all about. She was there for me, while the doctors were there for the baby. She was there any time I had questions or needed some positive thoughts during my pregnancy. My labor was no joke, almost 3 full days, and she was there by my side for almost every minute of it, supporting me. She helped me stand my ground when doctors and nurses tried to sway me towards Something I didnt Want for my birth. I’d highly recommend Amanda for anyone considering using a doula for their birth, she is spectacular.
