Haley was both our birth and postpartum doula and there are not words adequate to describe how meaningful her presence was. She came early on in labor and brought her calm, grounded and encouraging spirit. She was incredibly attentive and attuned to my needs during labor, and I felt stronger and more capable with her by my side. She worked seamlessly with my midwives (we had a homebirth) and stayed a bit longer after birth when the midwives left and my partner felt nervous about being left alone.
Haley checked in with me often after birth and came to see me on Day 4. Her presence during the early postpartum period (which was full of new breastfeeding challenges for me, with my second baby, and lots of intense hormones) was a very validating, reassuring and stabilizing force. She was helpful in doing some of the endless chores of the newborn phase - dishes, laundry, preparing snacks- but more importantly, helped me integrate my experiences of pregnancy and birth and created a space in which I could really marvel at the wonder of birth and the amazingness of my new baby. I could not be happier that Haley was our doula. Nor could I be more grateful.
Haley is a natural healer and giver. She is nurturing, kind, warm and thoughtful. She is also very skilled. I really loved having Haley's help as a postpartum doula. She listened to me and offered support, advice and help in an effortless way that made me feel heard and cared about. This is so important at that important stage of recovery and discovery. She understood how vulnerable both my son and I were at this time and with her sharp instinct and expertise provided us with real help that made a difference to my overall mood and stress level. I think this combination of warmth, ease and expertise is rare in any field and so necessary in the doula world. She simplified my life by noticing the practical tasks and eliminating them from my 'to do' while also being sensitive to the emotional component that can be very tricky during this time.
I was on my own for a few weeks shortly after the birth of my son and by going above and beyond in supporting my needs as a new mama and caring for my son's needs as a new human she made this time much less challenging. She is so lovely to be around ... and one of the few people I truly feel comfortable leaving my son with when I can't be with him. She should be in high demand. I am so grateful to her.
Haley was our doula for the birth of our daughter in April 2017. We absolutely loved having her support, knowledge, and empowerment during labor and birth.
I birthed our daughter at UCSF Mission Bay and was a bit apprehensive, since it was my very first experience. I had an idea of my "dream birth" scenario, hoping to have an unmedicated, natural experience. I really didn't know how much I would lean into a doula, but knew that I wanted a doula for my birthing experience to help support me and advocate for me.
Haley was wonderful — she counterbalanced my apprehension and fear with a calm strength. During active labor, I wanted to give into the pain and frankly, wanted to give up. I became scared, tired, and doubtful. Haley guided my experience, without being overwhelming or overbearing. Helping me get into different positions, breath, take sips of juice, and helped give me strength to continue. I could feel her confidence in me. She did this by making audible sounds with me, putting comforting pressure and massage on my back and hips, and helping guide my breathing. I ended up getting through the birth, without an epideral! I have Haley to thank for a huge portion of this. Having a doula and specifically Haley, positively impacted my whole labor / birth experience and I'm so thankful to have shared this part of my life with her.
After the birth, and after we were home from the hospital, Haley came over to regroup and talk about my labor / birth experience. It was wonderful to share the story from my perspective, talk about key moments, and just connect about the whole experience.
I highly recommend Haley and couldn't imagine having my daughter without her.
The moment I knew I was pregnant I knew we had to have a doula. The value of having another person there to be able to support you and your partner is unmeasurable. Haley was such a great resource to have throughout the pregnancy, she always had great answers to our questions and gave us guidance to additional sources if she didn’t have the answer. Haley is a warm and kind guiding light, she was so helpful!
For my husband, Wes, she made labor and delivery easier by managing the nurses and family, making sure everyone adhered to our wishes. She also supported him by making sure that they were on the same page with the labor. For example; during active labor Haley gave Wes lots of direction- during transition she suggested that I move to the birthing ball for most of the contractions. So she had Wes support my body during the contractions while she coached me through. Even though this was the most difficult part of labor Haley and Wes worked so well together to get me through, so much so that I didn't even realize that I was at that stage of labor.
Delivery was honestly my favorite part of the whole process, I know it sounds crazy, but its true! I also think this was in large part to the team of Wes and Haley. As they stood by my side I felt so full of love and support, that feeling along with the drive to meet my sweet baby, made for a very wonderful and easy delivery.
Haley would always ask if we needed anything be it water, broth, food or sleep. Simply by her being there she made us both worry less about the whole process and made us feel relaxed and at ease throughout the whole experience!
