Our birth education class teacher recommended Mary Humphrey at Full Circle Doula Services and we would absolutely do the same! Selecting a Doula is like few other decisions you get to make in this life.  You’re essentially asking yourself whom – besides your partner – do you trust, respect, and value to help bring your child into this world. They will be alongside you during some of your most intimate and vulnerable moments where emotions and experiences oscillate from the scared to the surprising to the sacred.  We created this connection with Mary, and together embraced this ineffable birthing journey, which resulted in our healthy, curious baby!

We loved Mary's general affect and presence, which strikes a beautiful blend of exuberant joy and considerate calm. Her essence is enhanced by an uncanny knowing of when to step in to offer her expertise, and when to discretely give a couple privacy to go deeply into their birth process together. Not to mention she has a “Mary Poppins” like bag of helpful tools (e.g. essential oils, diffuser, music, lights, massagers, etc.), which she’ll suggest at various points to create a birth ambiance that aligns with the unique journey you and your baby are on!  We found Mary to be such a positive addition to our changing family that we utilized all the services she offers: prenatal, delivery, and postpartum. During pregnancy and after our baby's arrival, she provided wonderful concrete supports from birth planning to foot massages to helping with the baby and our dogs to allow us to get some things done around the house. We cannot emphasize enough how thankful we are to have had Mary by our side for this experience, and believe Doulas to be an essential part of welcoming children to our planet!

I started to prepare for the postpartum period when I was just three months pregnant. I organized, I cleaned, I recruited help from friends. As my due date approached, I felt ready. Unfortunately, it’s true that nothing can prepare you for bringing a child into this world or for the period of several weeks right after birth. I was mentally exhausted, physically weak, and worried about my newborn’s well-being.

Mary was immediately a breath of fresh air. She arrived shortly after mother’s day with a beautiful bouquet of daffodils for me and quickly set about caring for my son, enabling me to catch up on desperately needed sleep, to shower or eat a healthy meal. She also anticipated what might cause stress (ie trimming his nails for the first time or a unclean bathroom) and magically took care of it. She’s incredibly thorough, kind and knowledgeable - as I asked her all sorts of random questions about babies and breastfeeeding those first weeks when I felt lost. I truly believe the best thing you can do for yourself after childbirth is to hire a postpartum doula to care for you. Mary is passionate about this field of work and it shows. Her care helped to restore me and give me confidence to keep going when sleep deprivation threatened to undo me. You won’t regret working with her!

My husband and I hired Mary as my birth and postpartum doula. For the birth, I needed to make some quick, unexpected decisions about induction. Over the phone, Mary gave me the information and encouragement I needed to confidently make my wishes known to my midwife, who was about to make some decisions that went against my birth plan. Mary's help ensured that I was able to follow my birth plan, which we had prepared and discussed in advance.

During labor, Mary provided me with all of the support I needed. She gave my husband much needed rest in soothing my back pain, ensured I always had enough water, made sure my wishes were heard by the medical personnel and always reminded me of my birth plan when a decision needed to be made. Also, when I was very tired during labor, a number of times Mary came over and checked with me to make sure I knew what was happening and what the nurse and midwife were doing. This made me feel in control over my birth process and it was absolutely lovely. I came away with an extremely positive feeling and memory of the birth of my son, and Mary played a key role in that.

Postpartum, Mary came to my house when my husband had to return to work. She gave me baby care information, helped me with cloth diapers, taught me how to use a ring sling, tidied up the kitchen and made lunch, and even helped to take care of our farm animals. It was also helpful to have someone go through my birth story again with me, and fill in some details.

Overall, I would definitely recommend Mary, because I believe she played a key role in ensuring that I was able to have the natural childbirth I wanted, by encouraging me that it was possible and making sure I knew all of my options.

Mary supported my daughter and I during a high risk delivery. It was my daughter's first delivery and my first grandchild. Mary worked out a birthing plan with the parents prior to delivery, encouraged the nervous Dad, and answered all the questions my daughter had beforehand. The day of delivery, which was an early one, Mary helped my daughter time contractions and alerted her when to go to the hospital. Mary called me when my daughter was in labor.  I can describe the whole experience as organic. Mary worked out details with the hospital staff, and I was able to be a part of the process feeling loved and supported as did my daughter. The birth was quick, beautiful, and miraculous. I think even the doctor was impressed. He said it was the best smelling birth he had experienced, as we chose to have aromatherapy included in the service. To say I highly recommend Mary would be an understatement. Anyone would be blessed by her during their labor experience.

Mary is like a family member for me. She helped me to go through the hardest part of my pregnancy as well as my labor. She made the labor lighter and funnier. At some point, we all were just laughing together. She has fought for my interests, her touches were taking my pain away, and her postpartum help kept me grounded so I could survive the first few weeks. I think about her as about a very good friend who is always on my side.
I wasn't scared to go through any of this because I knew that Mary will be there for me no matter when I needed her.

Right from the start, Mary was very professional and organized and she paid attention to every detail. She supported and reassured my husband, as he was a bit nervous about attending the birth of our daughter (this is rarely if ever done where he is from). Mary was clear and supportive as she walked us through our birth wish/plan preparation and she made sure to follow-up on our request to meet her backup doula. She responded quickly on the big day with reassurances in the early stages (via text, etc.) She came when we needed her and she was so helpful with massage and explaining what was normal to my husband as we labored at home. Mary was quick and helpful in going with us to the hospital and she started filling the tub as soon as she could when we arrived. She reminded me of my plans and wishes and it was such a fast labor that I barely noticed the other folks coming in and out of the room for checks. She helped us record a few precious moments and she made sure that we were all set with our little one before heading home. After the birth, Mary was an excellent resource with all of my silly questions and she was such a kind and warm person to talk to amidst our sleepless daze. She was a perfect fit and I am so glad that we had an opportunity to work with her. I have come out of this experience with confidence and with really great memories and I give her my highest recommendation!

Mary is warm, calm, supportive, knowledgeable, and I could not have asked for a better experience with a doula! When I met Mary I immediately knew that she was the right one for me. She is such a calming presence and exudes such natural joy when talking about children, babies, and birth. She alleviated my worries and made my husband and me feel like we would be able to have a birth experience where we felt heard and emotionally comfortable every step of the way. My husband and I sometimes have trouble self-advocating, we expressed this concern to Mary, and she was incredible at being a kind but firm voice helping us to do so during labor and delivery. My husband also wanted to be very hands-on and helpful during L&D and Mary was wonderful at giving him the tools do so successfully and helping both of us along the way. She was there for me via text or phone throughout pregnancy and during my last couple of weeks we checked in regularly. Mary was always kind, helpful, and willing to answer questions or calm my worries. When I started labor at home she was in constant contact with us. We had her meet us at the hospital and she was right with us every step of the way until after our son was born. I truly attribute how well I handled labor and delivery as well as how well it went in large part to Mary. I had originally been very nervous to give birth and now have both a beautiful baby and a very positive memory of my overall experience. Mary is incredible!
