When we first find out about our pregnancy we were excited and were already discussing whether to hire a doula or not, especially being foreigners and first-time parents. When we found out we were pregnant with twins our discussions were over, we were certainly getting one (or two)! And we couldn’t be luckier to end up with Emma and Liz. Both my husband and I can attest to Emma and Liz’s expertise and ability. We felt truly prepared for the arrival of the twins, not only for the labour but for the days before and after their arrival. We knew what to look out for before their births and what to expect postpartum. The twins, Emma and Tommaso, decided to arrive a month early, and Liz’s presence during labour was tremendously helpful. We had discussed our birth plan with both Emma and Liz and once at hospital Liz was the one reminding us about our preferences. Contractions came in quickly and in a few hours both babies were born. During early labour she helped me use the TENS unit, made suggestions about laboring positions, reminded me how to breathe through contractions and provided massages to help with pain, all this whilst coaching my husband on how to support me. During the last phase she kept me focused on the pushes, even after the first baby was born and my husband was attending her. Liz stayed with us for a few hours after the babies were born, she helped us with colostrum expression and stayed with me when Tommaso was brought to the NICU and my husband went with him. I never felt alone or uninformed and that’s simply amazing. I feel lucky to have had a vaginal birth and privileged to have had such support during my pregnancy and delivery: I am pretty sure that Emma and Liz’s attitude and knowledge helped a lot keeping my stress level close to zero. Looking back, I wouldn’t want nor do anything different. Emma and Liz are awesome and we highly recommend them. Amina and Luca – parents of Emma and Tommaso
Our experience with Emma from the warm pre-visits, massages, our birth and to now has been one that we feel very fortunate to have had. I knew that having a doula would be an important part of our experience in bringing our daughter into this world, but I was not clear on how impactful it would be to our family on the whole. Not only is Emma simply one of those calming presences that people are drawn to, but also a wonderful balance of knowledge and deeper, insightful wisdom. She just gets it and that has a lot to do with her patience and understanding to the human condition.
We had a wild, spontaneous and far from imagined birth at home. All of our calming approaches and prep for the day did not feel accessible at the onset of my 5 hour labor. Emma took us through that journey with a kindness, cleverness and love that was well beyond what I thought a doula would do for us. We are grateful for her gift to Maya simply by her presence that day. Also, in the days to follow she helped with challenges of breastfeeding, when times weren't getting any easier she introduced us to a wonderful lactation specialist, who introduced us to our amazing pediatrician. Her network honorably reflects her values as a doula. She is someone whose approach you will reflect on, someone you want to be part of your birth story and someone you will tell stories about to others and your little ones. I couldnt have asked for more.
Emma proved herself to be an invaluable member or our pregnancy, labor, and delivery care team. In preparation for our new arrival, Emma shared precisely the knowledge we needed and simplified the abundance of information and instruction available to expecting parents. One reason a birth doula was so appealing is because my delivery would be handled by an OB team and I wouldn’t know which doctor would be on call at the time of my birth. With Emma as apart of my team, I knew I’d have a familiar face present through the experience! Emma won our lasting appreciation during the interesting way my labor progressed, providing guidance through early labor, and experienced, calm company while my wife snoozed later, and critically Emma knew when it was time to head to the hospital! Ultimately, with Emma’s invaluable expertise, I was fortunate to have a dream birth experience, laboring at home and delivering our baby at our planned hospital without interventions, all with Emma’s immediate guidance as we welcomed our new family member. We encourage every expecting person we meet to try and include a doula as a part of their team too, and they’re usually nodding in agreement once we’ve shared all the reasons why Emma has our sincere appreciation!
Annie & Nicole, and Baby Lindsey too!
We had such a blast getting to know Emma and Liz - from our first interview, they made us feel welcome and excited about having them as part of our special experience. Their little "extras" (doula "tea"/newborn class, spinning babies lesson, loan of the TENS unit, etc.) were all incredibly helpful as we prepared for the arrival of our little girl. My labor ended up being quite different than I had imagined it would be and looooooong, but Emma was an amazing force. Her positive energy, encouraging words, and counter-pressure powered me through many hours of painful back labor and put dad at ease when he wasn't sure what to do or say to help. In his words, "having a baby is like moving to a foreign country where you don't know the language; Emma and Liz are essential interpreters for this journey."
Emma was a calming presence during my labor, guiding us through the birth of our first child in May 2017. I especially remember Emma helping me from the car to the triage room of the hospital when I was having very powerful contractions (my husband was parking the car). I was so grateful that she was there. Giving birth was incredibly difficult, but Emma made me feel cared for, and in the end, I feel like I had an empowering birth experience.
Also, I really enjoyed her prenatal massages as well as sessions with her before the birth to help prepare for early parenthood and breastfeeding. I highly recommend Emma as a doula.
Liz and Emma were great. Before delivery, they provided us with lots of information and helped us prepare for our baby. We had complications during our delivery. Liz was with us and supportive the whole time. She was there to help us express ourselves and get our needs/wants met. We also had some problems with breastfeeding affter we got home. Liz was there when we needed her and she helped us find a solution. Overall our experience was great and we would highly recommend them. They are a great team.
Emma was a joy to work with during a time of much transition. We needed a post partum doula, and she was fantastic. She was prompt, attentive and gave us the confidence we needed to adjust to life with a newborn. We were so grateful for her support in lactation, bathing and the many other parts of bringing a newborn home. And we slept! That was critical to us, and Emma was right there. We are confident with our child in her care and recommend Birth to Baby Northwest to anyone looking for a nurturing doula. The support we received gave us so many new skills that we didn't realize we needed. Thank you, Birth to Baby Northwest!
We loved Emma as our postpartum doula. We had twins and even though we are experienced parents (our first was 6 yo when the twins were born), Emma helped us along each step of the way in great detail. She is highly experienced and really knows her stuff. No woo woo, just good solid information and helping us prepare for what's coming and how to handle it. She also helped me learn to tandem nurse my twins and optimize my pumping. When we had her overnight, she made sure my husband got the night off and I was able to get as much sleep as possible. She's great. Very personable and kind too. With her help, we gained the skills and confidence we needed to thrive as parents of twins. Invaluable!
