My husband and I had our baby in January, and Sharon was a big help in preparing us both for the labor and delivery. She educated both of us about the process of childbirth and labor by doing exercises with us at home and right from the start it felt that the three of us were a good team as she helped us a lot in explaining what happens in each step of the process and how to deal with certain situations during the delivery. We found Sharon 3 months before the delivery and she was always available for questions and checked in with us regularly while we waited for the baby. She is also a mother so she can bring a lot of knowledge not just as a Doula but also as a person that went through the experience herself. I was open for an epidural but I hoped that I would endure the process without it so Sharon helped me immensely to ease the pain. She stayed with us through the entire labor, and her presence was soothing and her knowledge was extremely valuable. Most of all I felt secure while having her on my side because she understood what I was going through and guided and comforted me every minute while she was at my side. After the delivery, the nurses were very impressed with her and asked us for her contact, which shows me that she is an excellent and professional as the nurses interact with Doulas each day. Sharon also helped me during my recovery but most of all she helped me with the breastfeeding after I came home. The Baby wasn't latching properly so she showed me how to hold the baby but also what to do and after her visit, the baby started to latch properly. I feel Sharon was an integral part of my birth process and helped greatly for the process to go smooth and calm. She was at my side when my son was born and I will always have a nice memory of that day and a big part was because of her. I would highly recommend Sharon, she wasn't just a coach but a human being that was there for us on the most important day of our lives.
Sharon came to help me after the birth of my twin boys. When my husband went back to work, she spent several days caring for me, my sons and my home. I was so anxious to be alone for the first time with my newborns, and her presence was such a comfort. As a new mom, I had so many questions about breastfeeding and pumping, and newborn behaviors and Shay was so patient and gave me such confidence that I was doing a good job. It was nice to have another mother be there for me and to listen. I felt so cared for and empowered.
We had nearly given up on our search for a doula, finding it surprisingly hard to find someone you clicked with and whose expertise you could trust. We began to wonder if all the books we read would be enough to help us through labor (they wouldn’t have been, in our case). Then we found Shay, through a referral.
When we met for an interview over coffee, I remember thinking, “This is her. This is the person who will be there when I give birth!" While she is newer to the doula world than those who have attended births for years, she knows her stuff and can thoroughly answer any question or concern with a lot of care and attention.
I ended up delivering a week before my due date—something we weren’t quite expecting, but were thankfully ready for, thanks to Shay and the groundwork we laid together. My labor was long and challenging, but I was able to deliver a nine pound baby without epidural and can look back on the whole experience with joy and gladness. This is everything I wanted in a birth aside from a healthy baby. Without Shay’s help in supporting me through the labor (including hours of hip squeezes)
and helping my husband support me, I think I would have been crippled by the pain instead of pushing through it.
I am now five weeks postpartum and Shay has proved herself time and time again to be a wonderful resource and support. One can easily overlook postpartum and have instead a laser focus on the birth experience; this was me, and I was not prepared to have a baby with jaundice or a lip and tongue tie that made breastfeeding nearly impossible. Without her help I don’t know how i would have navigated these early challenges as a new Mom.
Shay truly cares and is invested in your birth experience, your baby, and your motherhood journey. Our family highly recommends her
I cannot say enough good things about Shay! I had planned a homebirth and knew I needed someone other than my husband support me so the burden didn’t fall entirely on him, and I’m so so glad I hired Shay. I ended up laboring for over 3 days and she was with me as often and as long as I asked her to be. She knew what to say and how to touch me both during contractions and between. She massaged me, helped me try all kinds of different exercises and positions to help the baby move down, and did TONS of research on every question I had. She’s a wealth of knowledge when it comes to birth and postpartum, and whatever she wasn’t sure of she researched thoroughly and provided me with links, articles, support groups, books and more. She also did all of this with an unbiased attitude. When I asked her about her personal opinions she gave them to me but never unsolicited which I wholly appreciated!
After I labored for so long Shay was probably nearly as exhausted as I was but she never let it show, she was my rock when I really needed it! In the end the midwife recommended a hospital transfer and Shay accompanied us and stayed while I had a cesarean section and afterward helped me start to breastfeed. After we came home Shay made a postpartum visit and helped me figure out the baby‘s latch and gave me emotional support in the very sensitive time right after birth. She encouraged me to process my feelings about the c section when I had planned a very natural home birth and literally let me cry on her shoulder! If you’re on the fence about hiring a doula let me help you out- you NEED one! I couldn’t have gone through this journey without Shay, and in her I have also found a dear friend. Do yourself a favor and hire her! She’s worth so much more than I can say, she will enrich and inform your birth experience and make it as special, smooth and enjoyable as it can be.
