This past January I gave birth to my baby girl; a baby that my husband and I had prayed for God to bless us with for 9 long years. She was somewhat of a surprise after two full years of fertility treatments, several rounds of IUI and two rounds of IVF. We had success with our second round of IVF and became pregnant, but eventually lost the baby. It was the most heartbreaking thing we had ever experienced. One year later, after returning from an anniversary trip, we discovered we were pregnant. My entire pregnancy I feared the worst, God taking this child away from me. I say all of that to paint the picture of the emotional state I was in as my due date approached. I had an emergency c-section with my first child, eleven years ago. With that in mind, coupled with my tiny body frame, I was faced with the decision of going forward with another c-section (scheduled this time), or attempting a VBAC. This is where Libby came in. Although Libby typically aids women who are giving birth vaginally, I felt I needed an advocate. Libby answered every question I had, educated me on many things. Ultimately, I made the decision to go forward with a scheduled c-section. Libby helped me to come up with a birth plan, in which I outlined many details, in hopes of making my birth process as comfortable as possible despite planning for a surgical delivery. I also asked Libby to be by my side on 'd-day'. I believe it was a first for her. Nonetheless, she was phenomenal. She was the calm in the storm, comforting and soothing me every step of the way. She held my hand, and eased my climbing anxiety and fear over surgery. She spoke up for me when I was not able to speak up for myself. While I was not Libby's typical client and it was a bit of unchartered territory for her, she handled it ever so gracefully. Also, unlike her typical client, I've had the unique opportunity to know Libby for a lifetime AND have her as my doula!
I didn't have a perfect VBAC like I'd longed for and prepared for, but Libby was invaluable to my healing repeat c section. She made herself available to me via phone and then in person while I was in active labor with her calming tone, encouraging affirmations, and soothing presence. She brought oils with her, gave me physical relief with massage, and was a perfectly calming presence in my home and in the hospital. She prayed for me and over me. I didn't get my VBAC, but I would STILL choose to hire Libby to be with me throughout my pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Couldn't have done it without her!
When I found out I was pregnant, a friend of mine sent me the book "Ina May's Guide to Childbirth". I was so encouraged by all the stories of real women and their experiences with natural labor. I felt strongly that if my body knew how to make a baby without my input it would know how to deliver one. All of the women in the book gave birth with a support group of other women, in addition to their husbands, by their side. I knew how important it was to select the right team, both midwife and doula, that felt the same way I did about birth. One of my top priorities was to create a calm, peaceful space at the hospital and I was looking for a doula who would offer both wisdom and strength without being overbearing. When I first spoke to Libby, I knew she was the exact right fit. After one phone call, she completely put my mind at ease. During the long waiting process (I was two weeks past due) she provided so much encouragement and helped me to trust that my body would know when it was the right time. During labor, Libby was the perfect balance of calm and supportive. Being that she is both a nurse and mother she was extremely informative when I had questions but was also very nurturing and reassuring during the birth process. It seems like she always knew the exact right time to encourage, give advice, pray over us, or just massage my back and hands with oils. When I was in the middle of the most intense part of labor she was always one step ahead of me- ensuring I stayed relaxed and controlled my breathing. When it finally came time to push, she taught me how to channel my breath into the push, giving my body even more strength to help the baby out. She not only helped support me but was extremely encouraging to my husband (the skeptic) who agreed that neither of us could have done it without her. Libby was the PERFECT fit and we won't have another baby without her!
