I had an amazing experience with Jessica. From the first time we spoke, I was confident in her expertise, but even more so, her commitment to my needs and my family's needs. During our initial meeting, Jessica spent over two hours with me going over my birth plan and playing with my two older, but very needy children. Having successfully delivered two other children naturally, I already had a good idea of what worked well for me, and what did not work well for me. Jessica took careful notes of the information I shared with her and made additional suggestions. Game Day: The day I went into labor, I called Jessica and she calmly reviewed the plan we had set up asked me if I was still comfortable with it. Wanting to labor as long as I could at home, Jessica frequently checked in on me (I did not want her there yet, though I knew she would have been if I wanted her to be). When we finally went to the hospital, Jessica took charge in all the right ways...she listened to my needs and firmly (when necessary)advocated on my behalf to the L&D nurses. She encouraged me to keep on going until the very end, had a few suitcases worth of suggestions to ease the pain, to help the baby keep moving etc. Jessica goes above and beyond with her clients. Since I had a full range of personal and religious needs, Jessica was receptive and respectful of my wishes during the labor and post partum period. She reached out to my parents and in-laws in the middle of the night, and took care of many personal needs for my husband and myself, not because it was her job as a doula, but because of the respect she has for the lifestyles of her clients. Post partum-Jessica again came to my house, spent hours with me and my baby. It was a great visit from a person who became a friend. PS: Jessica's game day T-Shirt was a helpful mantra all on its own, I still remember it. I won't spoil it-but boy does she have a good sense of humor!
Jessica was my doula for my second daughter. She was an incredible asset to our pregnancy and birth process. Jessica is obviously knowledgeable and passionate, without proselytizing or imposing any judgement on our decisions or path.
In the months before our due date, Jessica visited us twice, and was available if we had any questions at other times. These visits were wonderful to establish a rapport and gain a few tips and tricks. Whenever she came, she had ways to fill the time productively without having her own agenda. Every interaction with Jessica made us more confident that we'd selected the right person to attend our birth.
As we approached our due date, my water broke without contractions. I was in constant touch with Jessica to talk through approaches to get labor going on its own. While those exercises didn't end up getting labor going, I do think that they helped start to turn my daughter around (she was sunny-side up), which helped with labor, in the end. Jessica was a great touchstone at that time, since I was worried about induction if labor didn't get going on its own.
We ended up going to the hospital at 10pm (24 hours after my water broke). We started pitocin a couple hours later. I eventually asked Jessica to join us around 1 am (she was willing and available whenever we asked, she just didn't want to come before we needed her). Throughout labor, she was a comforting, calm, and helpful force. Many positions she suggested were incredibly helpful at relieving specific pain I was having. Her knowledge of the labor process and the hospital we were in was a huge benefit, and she was proactive at every step.
Basically, Jessica was an incredibly knowledgeable, comforting, charming, proactive, and helpful supporter of our birth process. I would recommend her to anyone.
Jessica was absolutely wonderful from start to finish. As my husband and I prepared for our first child, Jessica was supportive in so many ways, from providing valuable practical suggestions to helpful words of comfort. She listened to us and truly sought to understand what we wanted from the birth experience, presenting us with various options without ever expressing judgement. Throughout my labor, it felt so easy and natural to have her in the room. She was attentive to both me and my husband and worked well with the nurses. I had some stressful episodes during labor and things didn't go exactly as planned, but having Jessica in the room was a huge comfort. Jessica's care and support continued postpartum, and she was incredibly helpful as I struggled with nursing. In the months following the birth of our son, my husband and I have noted countless times how grateful we are for Jessica and that we are so glad we chose to work with her.
As a first time mom who was the first in my family to get pregnant, I had a lot of apprehensions about the childbirth process. Jessica made my birth experience a truly calm, empowered and centered one, and provided support beyond what I could have imagined, even after the birth of my daughter.
From day one, in our pre-birth meetings, Jessica answered all my questions, acknowledged my concerns, provided resources, and took the time to truly get to know me and respond to my fears. When labor came, Jessica was an absolute rock, reminding me of my strength and also helping me to work through the pain to make decisions that were in keeping with my wishes. My labor lasted 3+ days (!) due to the baby not being positioned properly. Jessica helped get the baby into position to advance the labor with various positioning exercises, and was available 24/7 for any questions I had. She was there by my side for nearly 24 hours at the hospital, helping to handle sometimes difficult staff and even family members, and advocating for me all the way.
Because of her kindness, knowledge, encouragement and advocacy at all hours of the day through many days, I can honestly say I have no regrets about my birth experience and felt empowered throughout it all, despite the epidural which was not originally part of my plan (but then nor was a 3+ day labor!). She even checked in with me during a difficult post-partum period, in which I was experiencing post partum anxiety and some post-partum medical issues, helping to guide me by providing resources and support. Jessica is truly wonderful and I feel so fortunate that she was a part of my daughter's birth. I simply cannot recommend her highly enough. Thank you Jessica!
Jessica was our doula for my second pregnancy, and my husband and I wish we had hired her for our first! We clicked immediately in terms of personality and approaches to pregnancy and childbirth. I had been OK with how my first pregnancy and labor went, but felt that my doctor was not terribly supportive of more natural approaches. Despite the fact that I went 2 weeks late during my first pregnancy, this time, my doctor wanted to induce at exactly 40 weeks, for no reason other than me being now over 35 years old. I knew it was likely my pregnancy would go past 40 weeks naturally, and Jessica was very understanding of my concerns. She had talked to me throughout the process about my growing concerns, and when ultimately I decided to switch at about 34 weeks to a group of respected midwives who deliver at one of our area's finest hospitals, she was very encouraging. Finally, it felt like I had a team that was truly on the side of me and my baby!
Jessica provided a lot of information and tips throughout pregnancy, and showed my husband and I things we could do during pregnancy to encourage the baby to move down, including tips for posterior babies; while my daughter had been posterior during at least some of my labor, we suspected (and I now can confirm) I'm a back laborer, regardless of baby's position! I wound up going in for an inducation at 42w1d, and went into natural labor almost immediately. Jessica came to the hospital right away at an unexpected hour, and was up all night with me laboring, providing a lot of physical and moral support. She helped move the labor along but also kept me comfortable, and communicated with my husband was given plenty of lead time to drop off our daughter at a reasonable hour and come to the hospital to join us, so that not everyone in our family was sleep-deprived!
She did a great job and was an amazing source of support. We hope it won't be the last time we get to work with her. Thank you, Jessica!
I am so thankful that I chose Jessica Huey as my Doula. Jessica was my adviser as I went from planning a hospital birth to knowing that a homebirth was right for me. She never pressured me and offered nothing but advice. Whenever I had questions, Jessica tapped into her research to help. It was obvious very early on that she loves what she does and that helping women become empowered something she wholeheartedly supports. That said, it didn’t feel in the slightest that Jessica was going to make the process about her. It isn’t fair to pass judgment on the other doulas I interviewed, but it felt like their personalities would overtake my own. Jessica is not shy, but she knows when to step back and not interfere. On the other hand, she knows how to be firm when my mother, in my case, was trying to control a situation. I have no doubt that Jessica could keep a doctor following a birth plan while not making the mother uncomfortable. She was so amazing that we joked that she needs to be pediatrician too. I cannot say enough about how brilliant, supportive, and positive she is. Jessica was there for us through my 36 hour labor. She ALWAYS knew when I needed comfort while I was in labor. She kept my husband SANE, fed, and in good spirits. Don’t let the fact that she doesn’t have kids deter you. I loved my midwives; but, they had 6 kids between them and Jessica was STILL better at supporting me. I just as easily could have had other midwives present and felt fine, as long as Jessica was there. She is the biggest reason that our first birth was a success. She was the first one there and the last to leave. She helped with post-partum care, and my moods. I still reach out to her for advice. She even BROKE HER LEG as she was helping after the birth. She STATYED and showed up that weekend for a post-partum visit. No complaints. If that doesn’t say she is a badass, awesome doula, I don’t know what does. I highly recommend her.
Having a baby can be a scary experience. I had two children with an epidural but didn't have the expert I needed to have a child naturally until I met my wonderful doula Jessica! The experience was wonderful! She met with me and my husband and showed us techniques to practice to prepare us for delivery. We chatted several times to stay on the same page to be prepared for the delivery. Then the wonderful day came. Jessica was right there prepared with her bag of tricks to make my delivery wonderful. She helped me stretch my back and neck to prepare for my mission. She offered different suggestions when things were getting heated. She had a wonderful heated pack for the small of my back, cool wash cloth for my brow. She kept the popcicles coming to keep me hydrated. She encorporated my husband just at the right point so he knew I couldn't do it without his help. Then before you knew it I was shivvering and couldn't control it. I had no idea what was going on but Jessica reassured me that I was transitioning and it was normal and soon I would see my precious baby. His head was soon crowning and I was holding him 5 minutes or less later. I can not express enough the value of Jesica!!! I could not have had a child without an epidural without Jessica!! I will forever remember my wonderful birthing experience with her. If I were able I would have several more children and beg Jessica to be my Doula. The experience was wonderful.
