Wendy Shiffer is an excellent doula! I had a difficult and long labor and Wendy helped my husband and I from the beginning to the end. We are thankful for her guidance during the most difficult times and the beautiful moments after the birth. In total she spent over 20 hours with us, always coaching me during labor without a break! In addition she came to our house twice before the birth to get to know us and answered our many questions. We are forever grateful for her coaching and education and we recommend her to any couple!
From the first email full of questions about placenta encapsulation to the quick delivery of my pills after - I could not be happier! I also greatly appreciated that I could follow-up with questions during my postpartum journey. I noticed SUCH a difference this time after the birth of my baby with my mood and milk production and I owe a large part of that to having my pills. We’re pretty sure this was our last little one but if it’s not, we would definitely go to her again. In the meantime, I recommend her for placenta encapsulation and all the other services she offers!
Wendy was an excellent asset and I am so glad that we had her assistance and advice every step of the way. For medical reasons we needed to be induced, which we knew many weeks ahead of time. Wendy took the time to educate us about the various methods of induction, augmentation options, and helped us think through various scenarios that we might encounter during the laboring process. When it came time for labor, my husband and I felt so well informed, and we were able to make an educated decision at every juncture without any stress or confusion. Wendy was a calming presence in the L&D room, and allowed both me and my husband to be fully present for the birth experience without fear or anxiety. My husband's only hesitation about using a Doula was that she would try to push a no-intervention approach, even if I decided I wanted to use interventions such as an epidural. We discussed this beforehand, and after 17 hours of induced labor when I asked for an epidural she was incredibly supportive. I didn't feel like i was giving up, I felt like i was making a positive choice that was right in the moment, which was exactly what I needed. We gave birth to a healthy little girl, and it was a beautiful experience from start to finish. I credit Wendy with helping us accomplish such a positive and empowering birth experience. Thank you, Wendy!!
We used Wendy as our doula for the birth of our son in December 2013. From the time that the contractions started until our baby was born was over 50 hours, which meant we were up all night two nights in a row. Wendy was an amazing support throughout the entire experience. Not only was it nice to have someone to help us naviagate the terminology and manage the pain, but her presence also gave my husband a much-needed break and rest. We had a very positive birth experience, and Wendy was a huge part of that.
Wendy was a fantastic coach for us! We did not have a doula for our first child and so made sure to have one for our second. Wendy was highly recommended by a friend. Her coaching began from our first meeting where she put my husband (an extreme introvert) at ease with her calm demeanor. She really listened to what we were looking for in the birth experience and our concerns or questions. She started her coaching right away with tips and techniques to help avoid back labor ( I had with my first and felt like the second was also in that position). She is open, realistic and helps make you aware of choices available to you and of course does not pass judgement on the choices you make.
She was with us so quickly when labor was in full swing (despite the snow storm, of course) and was such a help during my labor. She was again very calm and comforting and helped coach my husband to do what I needed him to. She doesn't interfer with that bond at all, but instead enables them to be more helpful which is crucial. While I was focusing on my work, she brought the compresses and the aromotherapy I didn't know I needed until they were magically there. She helped coach me through the hardest pains when every mother doubts whether she can make it through and gave specific directions during the final pushing to help make each one the most effective.
And her visits even after we got home were very nice and supportive. Both my husband and I would recommend Wendy to any and everyone!!
Oh my, where can I begin? Wendy was the most amazing person at her job! We offered to adopt her after our experience with her as our doula. She was calm, kind, level-headed, and helped us make well thought-out decisions when I was in the middle of labor. She gave my husband things to do that were effective and helped him feel part of the whole process of our daughter's birth. She had so many techniques that helps relieve pressure and pain during contractions and don't let her size fool you! She's tiny but mighty!!!
Having Wendy by our side before and during our labor experience was invaluable. I really appreciated the visits we had beforehand, where Wendy answered our quetions and gave us information on what to expect. My labor lasted for almost 30 HOURS and Wendy was there the whole time with her calm and confident presence. There were several twists and turns requiring us to make quick decisions about possible interventions and having Wendy there with her experience really helped us to feel more fully informed about each one. Thanks Wendy!
Wendy was amazing! I can't recommend her enough. She was very professional, we had an informational meeting and then one meeting to go over birth strategies before my son was born. We planned to have another meeting but my son was five weeks early and Wendy was ready and had a lot of great techniques that we hadn't even had a chance to review. During the labor she encouraged many different positions and reminded me of things I wanted to do. She reminded my husband to get the camera ready, which is very important! I was able to have a med free birth thanks to Wendy's coaching and support.
Wendy was a vital educational resource before my son's birth as well as calm presence during the birth. Prior to my pregnancy, she was even so gracious to recommend the local birthing center to me and be willing to have me shadow her as a doula or talk about midwifery. After the birth, she also was willing to come visit after the baby was born to help me troubleshoot with breastfeeding.
I appreciate her vast experience and expertise as well as her down-to-earth and relatable style. I believe she appeals to women of all ages and backgrounds, not a specific subgroup like some doulas seem to be today.
I would highly recommend her as a doula, especially since she is not intrusive and will do only what you ask and need of her, but also because she is well-versed in advocating for mothers in any setting.
