My first time having a doula was with my fifth birth. I had four previous non-medicated vaginal deliveries. My last birth was very hard and I realized just how vulnerable I was towards the end. I wanted another woman there to encourage me and advocate for me so I could concentrate on laboring. My husband ended up not being able to attend the birth because he was in the hospital after an emergency nephrectomy. It was a scary time and I had been in the hospital at his side for ten days. Lisa came home with me when I was pretty sure the baby would be coming within 48 hours. I had a lot of prodromal labor and I needed to hear that the baby was coming. Every time my confidence was a little shaken I would look at Lisa and ask her " The baby is coming right? I can do this, right?" She assured me I would meet my baby soon and yes I could do it. She said " You are doing it, Natasha" Every time she said it I felt so relieved and stronger. I just needed to look into another woman's eyes, who had been there before and hear it. She knew many different ways to help relieve some of the back labour pain. I had never had any kind of help before. It felt amazing every time I asked her to give me pressure on my back. I wish I would have had a doula present at my other births. We were talking a couple weeks later and Lisa said " Athletes have a whole team of support people for them to win a game. Why don't women have a team of support to help them bring a child into the world?"
Lisa knew my wishes for the little stuff too. She knew I wanted to bring the baby to my chest instead of having the baby placed on my chest by the nurse. She knew I wanted that no interruption time right after the birth. She was able to make that happen. She was there when I needed her and then at times when I needed to be alone and focus I hardly noticed her because she was in the background, waiting for those cues that I needed her. Be good to yourself and have a doula at your side.
