Rachel Curtis is a knowledgeable, professional, and trustworthy doula who was invaluable in my birth experience. I would absolutely recommend her to any expectant mother. I truly believe I would not have been able to have such a successful birth experience without her. This was our first baby and I have chronic back injuries that give me constant pain, but still wanted to do an unmedicated delivery, so I was very nervous about the pain of the childbirth. Rachel listened patiently to all my fears and provided me with resources, articles, and videos to reference for any questions I had. She completely empowered us to plan the whole birth experience however we wanted, with her there as a trusted resource. After my water broke, I started contracting immediately, and they were intense and close together and more painful than I had imagined. I called Rachel and she coached me over the phone to manage my breathing to make it through each contraction. Rachel was there at the hospital doors waiting when we got there and coached me the whole way through. She helped me stick to my plan of not resorting to an epidural which I believe I would have failed to do if she had not been there coaching me. Her soothing voice and constant attention helped me relax and make it through the painful contractions. Before I knew it it was time to push and our little girl came out! It really made the difference to have that person dedicated to me through whole experience. If it was just my husband he would not have known how to help me best and though the labor and delivery nurses were great, they were in and out of the room and not solely focused on coaching me through the entire labor. Having a doula was the best decision and I would recommend Rachel to every expectant mother. She helped turn my anxiety and fear about the experience into a positive, empowering birth. I was proud of myself for making it through and have a beautiful little girl to show for it.
When our plans changed from a home birth in New Mexico to a birth center birth in El Paso Texas we had a lot to decide in a short amount of time. The baby was very comfortable in a breech presentation and to attempt a natural birth we would have to leave home. Where we had 9 months to build relatioships with our birth team back home we arrived 41 weeks along and ready to go into labor any minute. The time I had with Rachel melted any aprehension and made me feel like she was a kind and compassionate person that appreciated my attitudes about the female bodies abilities for natural delivery. When we finally did go into labor her help was indispensable. She read my body language and helped to remind me to relax specific parts of my body I was holding tense. She was right there by my side throughout my labor and delivery and she used the type of words I had written in my birth affirmations to support me through the journey. she also gave a lot of amazing ideas of support to my husband and mother who were also by my side helping me though birthing my first child. Her calm and focused attention helped me though the challenges of labor and made me feel like I had a solid pillar to lean. When I was in the thick of it I remember her voice cheering me on and the amount of enthusiasm she shared when our son was finally born. Her price is very fair for the amazing amount of time and energy she gave and I would most definintly recommend her doula services to anyone getting ready to give birth in any setting. Thank you Rachel!
