Hiring a doula, you think, will i really need her? Since our birth, it is the one constant i tell every pregnant woman....do not even think about having a baby without a doula. We were immediately drawn to her temperament and personality. She is a calm soothing and approachable person. We got to meet with her privately to go over our thoughts, plan, hopes, preferences for touch, talk, encouragement. LABOR: when i went into labor i kept thinking, i dont know if she should come yet, will it help? Immediately when she arrived she provided instant relief from my back labor - she was such a calm presence, she didnt bring her own energy into the room, but matched mine and was exactly the type of vibe i wanted. What you dont realize is that laboring, you have nurses & OB are switching, they are doing checks but you will continue to labor after they've gone, its so crucial to have a doula - its the one person (aside from your partner) that stays the same. She knows all your preferences and needs and you dont lose the rhythm you've gotten going in labor. We ended up having an emergency ambulance transfer, meconium, shoulder dystocia, and hemorrhaging - and lost the team our team - and now had an OB/nurses we've never met - having Lisa was so important to our state of mind and remaining calm. She was my right hand and i felt so connected to her - even writing it makes me choke up - I am/was beyond grateful that we found her and i always say if we're having a baby, we're having Lisa there. There is so much focus on your OB/Midwife which is of course so important about delivery but your doula is the person that aids you the entire journey of labor. Their roles are both so important but i cant stress enough how important it was to have Lisa there as our constant in a time when everything was swirling, changing and emotional. You never know what type of delivery, labor or experience you will have, do yourself a favor and hire Lisa. Andria + CJ
When my husband and I met Lisa Nobis, we knew we wanted her to be a part of my birth team. Lisa is incredibly funny, kind, compassionate, and has a calming presence that was invaluable in the weeks prior to the birth through the hardest moments of my labor. In our initial meetings, Lisa and I discussed what I envisioned for the birth, my preferred pain management techniques, and my communication style. In the weeks leading up to the birth, we kept in touch, helping me feel supported even before labor began. Once those real contractions came on, she came over within 30 minutes, helping me navigate those initial painful moments. After an hour or so of working through early labor, we made our way to the birth center where the real work began.
Lisa was a crucial member of my birth team, walking me through positions, massaging my back, reminding me to breathe, guiding my husband, and helping me find my center when I needed extra support. Lisa worked with my midwives extremely well, suggesting new positions when my baby was not progressing. Lisa’s professionalism, warmth, and expertise as a doula helped me to feel secure and safe while I focused on finding my strength through a difficult labor.
Lisa was by my side for the entire 13 hours of labor, 3 hours of pushing, and hours of recovery at the birth center. The next day she came over with beautiful white flowers, showing that Lisa’s service as a doula goes above and beyond. She even met with me a couple of months later to help me process the birth, providing me the chance to honor the pain I experienced and acknowledge the strength I found within. I could not have hoped for a better experience with Lisa—I recommend her wholeheartedly.
After interviewing a few doulas, my husband and I extended an invitation to Lisa to join us in the birth of our daughter. It was our first child and we were eager to have an expert to guide us through the experience and Lisa is just that kind of person!
Pre-birth, Lisa visited with us to establish a great client/patient relationship, getting to know our wishes and preferences for the birth. She also provided great education and resources about labor, birth, and breastfeeding so my husband and I felt we had a good game plan going into it. We learned relaxation techniques from Lisa to help me through each contraction as well as stretching excercises that helped me remain comfortable in the last couple weeks of pregnancy.
My labor progressed quicker than I anticipated but between Lisa and my husband (she helped guide him to be an effective birth partner), I was able to get into a nice zone managing each contraction and deliver our baby girl without pain medication, as I had hoped. Throughout labor, I remember hearing my husband's voice and feeling Lisa's presence of calm and tranquility. Together, the two of them got me through the most emotional day of my life. After delivery, Lisa was kind enough to take a few photos of our new family to capture our tears and joy as we met our daughter for the first time. It's a moment I'll never forget and we will treasure those pictures forever.
I am very happy and grateful Lisa was part of our big day and would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a doula.
I made the late in pregnancy decision to have a doula present at my birth, and I am so glad that I did! Having Lisa there was so wonderful; from my very first meeting with her she was so kind, understanding, and made me feel completely comfortable. She was an amazing support for both my husband and I during my labor, and while I hadn't necessarily planned on going pain med free (I was playing things by ear), I was able to go without an epidural in large part because of her calming presence. I also know that had I gone the route of the epidural, she would have been completely supportive with that choice as well. She was so knowledgeable about different things to try during contractions and she and my husband helped me through each and every painful one.
I pushed for 2 hours and during that time Lisa suggested several different positions to try and coax my baby girl down. I ended up needing a c-section and I was so glad to have Lisa in the OR with my husband and I. She was able to talk us through what was going on, and kept us feeling calm. I was a little loopy from labor and pushing and now the pain meds, and Lisa listened to my inane chatter the whole time. :) After the c section was done and I was back in my room with my daughter, Lisa stayed for a few hours and made sure the 3 of us were doing well and helped us process and decompress from the amazing and exhausting thing we'd just done.
Lisa was such a great part of my birth experience. Both my husband and I were so glad she was there and I know that ultimately we both felt more in control and more empowered throughout the labor because she was with us. I am forever grateful to her for helping to welcome our sweet daughter into the world!
My husband and I hired Lisa to be our birth doula for the birth of our son, and we are so happy that we did! We had every intention of having a natural home birth, but my due date came and went, and after 42 weeks, some alarming medical issues arose. My midwife transferred my care to a midwife with hospital privileges, and I was to be induced immediately. I was distraught, frightened, stressed, and exhausted. This was not the outcome that my husband and I had planned and hoped for. We knew that I would not be able to have the birth experience that I wanted. Lisa met us at the hospital and really helped calm our fears. She was amazing during the 36 hour induction and delivery. She was there through it all, holding my hand, making sure I was drinking fluids, and being my advocate and voice to the hospital nurses and midwife. She knew my birth plan, and she made sure that we stayed as close to it as possible. I am happy to say that because of her voice, I avoided a c-section, and was able to have a natural vaginal birth. Because of her knowledge of relaxation techniques and comfort measures, I was able to avoid an epidural. Lisa is knowledgeable and passionate about birth, and it shows in the level of care and support she provides. I highly recommend Lisa for your next birth! Lisa rocks!
My husband and I are both so glad Lisa was a part of our son's birth experience. She totally set us both at ease - from her pre-labor visit, to our long day in the delivery room, to the time we spent together post-partem. She was helpful and nurturing while giving us both the space to make decisions. I feel like I fully owned my birth experience, which is so, so important. She's very easy to talk to, she's not judgemental, and she's really quite hilarious. The three of us made a great team, and I would recommend her to anyone.
