Kasey was not hired as my doula or present at my birth because of the distance between us, but that didn't stop her from helping me tremendously throughout my pregnancy and enriching the entire experience. She guided me through the many deeply personal choices without a bit of judgement, despite some choices being different from her own. Most importantly, Kasey awoke me to the fact that these choices belong to my husband and me, no one else, and that I needed to make decisions that were right for us, regardless of the comments of family and friends. I am so thankful for that, as it saved a lot of regret. She never pushed me; she only encouraged at a time when all moms need some words of wisdom and loving kindness. I genuinely don't know what I would have done without Kasey. She was the most helpful person I had, going even above and the beyond the tremendous help my incredibly expensive Denver, CO doula provided. She has a true gift for finding the areas in which you need help and recognizing the areas in which you shine. I am so grateful she chose to help, rather than ignore, me.
At the start of my pregnancy I didn't see myself as someone who would ever use a doula. I am a pretty private person, so the thought of someone besides my husband experiencing the most personal experience of my life with me was just not appealing. However, Kasey, my sister in law happened to be passionate about the doula process and was working toward her certification. As I gave it more thought I decided it was a good idea not just to give me extra support, but also my husband. It was the best decision I made for the pregnancy, labor, and birthing process.
Kasey was well read on the subjects related to pregnancy and never minded if I had a question even before birth. She did my research for me throughout pregnancy. She also checked on me in some way almost every week. Once it was labor time we had built such a bond that it was natural to have her there. I labored at home for about 16 hours before going to hospital and Kasey was there for that time. She knew the right questions to ask to help us figure out when we should go to hospital. She helped me keep labor going by encouraging walking and helping me trust my instincts. Once at the hospital, she knew what to tell the doctors and what questions to ask that my husband and I didn't or couldn't think of. She kept us both calm throughout the process. She reminded me to keep rhythm during contractions. She also calmed my husband when he needed it. They worked together well to give me what I needed. At the time of birth I had asked her to take charge of the camera. She took pictures to catch moments I would have otherwise forgotten. Even after delivery she stayed make sure transition to postpartum went well.
Again, this was the best decision I ever made. I could not have done this process naturally without her there. She was extremely professional when she needed to be but also empathetic and encouraging. I would easily use her again as my doula.
I was extremely surprised with Kasey's knowledge of the varying ways to labor and help. She was willing to do anything needed, and to offer great advise and suggestions without expecting us to take it. She was good at going with the flow and describing to me what my wife was going through even though I was in the dark most of the time. I couldnt imagine any first time couple going through labor without a doula. Just the extra hands is worth it. But having basically a nurse's knowlege and care with you the whole time is the real bonus.
