Cherl was an incredible support before, during and after the birth of our daughter. During the weeks leading up to my due date she helped my husband and I prepare for the labor which helped us to feel more confident. Her calming nature was a great source of reassurance for us. We always felt like she was there to genuinely support and enable what we hoped for during the birth experience. Although we planed to labor at home, I went past my due date and had a scheduled induction but ended up going into labor naturally a few hours after arriving at the hospital. When Cherl arrived in our room, I immediately felt so comforted knowing she was there. It seemed like she intuitively knew what I needed – when to encourage me, when to reassure me, and when to just be a quiet presence. During my labor several issues came up (baby's heart rate, baby's position, meconium, babyneeded the vacuum) and it was often frightening to hear doctors talk about those issues but Cherl consistently reassured me that everything would be ok. She was also extremely supportive for my husband and made us both feel more confident. She was there every step of the way during my labor and I can’t imagine going through it without her. But Cherl’s support didn’t end with out daughter’s arrival. She checked in on me and gave vital emotional support during our transition home. The first few weeks with a newborn were daunting and Cherl was nothing short of a lifeline for me during some overwhelming times. She provided so much practical guidance as well as emotional encouragement. From helping me navigate perinatal supports for new moms, to helping me pump for the first time, and coaching us when giving our daughter her first bottle she was incredible through it all. I cannot find the words to sufficiently express my appreciation for Cherl but suffice it to say, Cherl is an integral part of my daughter’s arrival into this world and for that I have forever grateful.
When we found out I was pregnant, we deliberated over whether we wanted to spring for a doula on top of the midwives we were seeing. Then we read that a doula is not only there to support the birthing parent, but also to support the birth partner so that they can better support the one giving birth. My husband and I searched doulamatch.net and found Cherl. Once we read her bio, she was the first doula we wanted to meet, and when we met, we felt instantly comfortable with her. She was intelligent and professional, but also down to earth and funny. She came to our house a handful of times throughout the pregnancy to help us prepare for birth, mentally, emotionally, and physically. She gave my husband and I relaxation exercises as well. And she truly was there for us, any time, any day. I could text her or email her with the most random of questions. If I didn't reach out to her for a couple of weeks, she would check in with me to see how I was doing. She was just the right amount of involved, and always helpful. Most importantly, she was there with us from early labor through a long and slow labor at the birth center, and then came with us to the hospital when we decided to transfer. All along, she was an advocate for our voice, a vote of confidence behind every decision we made. She helped make sure we felt that we were getting the birth we wanted. We were so grateful to have her with us during the c-section. She was able to help my husband know what he could do and how he could help during and after surgery. She stayed with me all the way until my baby was placed on my chest an hour and a half after surgery. To say that Cherl went above and beyond our expectations is still an understatement. Her compassion and fierce advocacy for our own desires continued into postpartum care as well. She brought us groceries and treats and helped us make sure the transition to a family of three was comfortable, joyous, and healthful.
Cherl was our doula for the birth of our first son in May of 2018 and we could not be happier with our experience. My husband and I have very different personalities and she was the perfect person to balance our birth team. She has a very calm and confident demeanor, which is so important when it comes to birth!
She took the time to do two home visits before the birth as well as checking in with me frequently by phone/text. Because of my gestational diabetes, I was induced, so I had a slooooooow induction day at the hospital and called Cherl to come when my contractions started getting more intense at 2am. She arrived promptly and was a godsend in helping me get through the pitocin contractions.
After several hours and some complications it was suggested by the midwives that we pursue a csection. I was SO glad to have Cherl there to help me navigate that process. I did not mind having a csection, however, I wanted to make sure that I was making the right choice and Cherl's insight in navigating it all was incredibly helpful. (Mostly it was important that I felt that a csection was necessary - I didn't want to do an unnecessary one, of course - so having an opinion from someone who has helped many people through birth was priceless.)
The other wonderful thing was that Cherl discussed a "gentle csection" with us prior to birth. Of course, I didn't think I would need that information going into it - but wow, I was glad I had it when it came down to it! The csection experience ended up being just fine and Cherl was there to calm me and take a million AMAZING pictures so that my husband could be present with me.
After the birth, Cherl was incredibly helpful getting us breastfeeding. She checked in frequently by text (my preferred communication method!) and did two home visits afterwards.
We are so grateful to have had her present for our son's birth and would highly recommend her.
We’re so grateful to have had Cherl part of our daughter’s birth experience. She provided invaluable emotional and physical support throughout labor, intuitively adjusting her approach to accommodate our needs as labor progressed. I took comfort in her presence, knowing that if I’d forgotten something or hadn’t considered something, she’d be prepared to bring it up or supply the needed item (her birth bag is like a magic carpet bag and a reflection of her thoroughness).
She’s warm, deeply compassionate, informed (as a left-brained person, I tend to trust people who are curious and highly rational!), and has an upbeat, yet calm energy that was wonderful to have in labor. I also really appreciated that I felt confident depending on her both physically (I wanted someone I could really lean into without any hesitation) and emotionally (without fearing judgement in my most vulnerable state). She’s someone around whom I felt instantly comfortable.
We are so happy that Cherl will always be a part of how our daughter came into the world!
Cherl was the doula for the birth of my first child. From our first meeting, I appreciated her kind and open-minded approach. I was apprehensive about hiring a doula--uncertain if it was a necessary expense and worried that a Doula would pressure or expect a certain kind of birth plan. Cherl made me feel that no matter what I decided for my birth plan, she would be onboard and could help me to achieve it. Her hands-on, thoughtful support before, during, and after delivery was essential. Without Cherl I would never have met my goal of a natural, unmedicated birth.
Cherl provided excellent advice in how to prepare myself mentally for labor. In addition to support preparing the birth and pain management plan, Cherl helped me to cope when I developed gestational diabetes which changed the options I had for my labor, providing guidance that helped me identify questions for my doctors and provided me with the tools to advocate for myself. She was quick to respond to calls and texts, and was an essential support for me as my doctor appointments and tests multiplied in the final weeks.
My labor progressed very quickly, which was scary and extreme. Everything I thought I would and wouldn't want for pain management turned out to be wrong. Cherl was quick thinking and flexible--she provided support and encouragement, helped us find and maintain breathing patterns and movement for contractions, and made sure I was taken care of with food and water so that I could power through the labor. We would have been absolutely lost without her leadership and support. She even made sure to get photos of our new family.
As a first-time mom, I appreciated her breastfeeding and emotional support once we were home, and frequent check-ins as I adjusted to motherhood. I cannot express our incredible gratitude for the care she showed me and our family. Should I have another child, working with Cherl again will be included in my reasons for excitement.
