I can’t speak highly enough about DC Birth Doulas II, and of Casey and Jen G. in particular, I don’t know what we would have done without them. I had had an easy pregnancy, was very active and healthy, and was planning for a natural birth, ideally with little to no interventions. However, I was diagnosed with cholestatis at 40 weeks and my midwife team advised induction. From the get-go, Casey’s support was invaluable. She walked us through the various induction options and what they all meant, so that when I arrived at the hospital I already felt calmer, more informed and prepared for what was to come. Casey helped us at every step of the way, knowing what equipment/supplies to ask for (birthing ball, good pillows), setting up the lighting, and generally making us feel as comfortable as possible. Throughout the next 36 hours, through painful contractions, additional diagnoses of severe pre-eclampsia, and prolonged labor Casey provided us with advice, and physical and emotional support that went above and beyond. She helped me into a myriad of positions to ease the pain and help move baby, working closely with my midwife team at every step. She talked me through each contraction when I thought I couldn’t do it anymore. She guided my husband on how to help me at each step of the way. We would have been lost without her! The labor ended in an unavoidable c-section, and having Casey and Jen there to support us before and after the surgery was invaluable. I started out skeptical about doulas, but the reality is that when it all goes down, you don’t know what’s going to happen. Without Casey there, we would have felt quite bewildered and we just wouldn’t have had the wherewithal to remember all those positions we’d learned in our birthing class! After this experience I’m 100% sold. Everyone should have a doula! From the depths of our hearts, thank you Casey, Jen and the whole DCBDII team.

My husband and I couldn't be happier with our experience with D.C. Birth Doulas II! We were unsure about whether or not we wanted to hire a doula until less than two months before our son's birth, but we are so happy that we decided to work with these wonderful women. We met with both Jens at our prenatal visit, and I was in contact via phone and email with Casey and Maddison. They were all kind and knowledgeable, and I know that we would have been happy with any of them for our birth.

For our son's birth, Jen G. was on call. She was available for questions and support as I began to have contractions the day before he was born, she spoke with my husband throughout my son's birthday as my contractions quickly progressed, and she gave us advice on when to go to the hospital. Once we met at the hospital, her support and positive, calming energy were invaluable. She kept me focused in triage while my husband frantically filled out paperwork, gave me tips on positions (swaying, squatting, kneeling) that would be comfortable, reminded me to keep the tone of my groans low, covered me when I was cold, gave me cold compresses when I was warm, told me how to breathe and push. She massaged my hips during contractions, told my husband how he could be the most helpful, took the first photos of our family, and encouraged us throughout. She even got food and iced tea for us after the birth!

I was committed to having a natural birth, and Jen helped me make that goal a reality. Without her support, I'm not sure if I would have made it, and I know it would have been a lot more difficult. Whether you want a natural or medicated birth or are unsure of what you want, I highly recommend D.C. Birth Doulas II! Jen contributed so much to what was a positive and empowering experience, and I am so grateful. Thank you!

We had our first child in May 2017 and had an amazing experience with the DC Birth Doulas II. We first met the doulas at the open orientation and immediately felt comfortable with all of them. Once we decided to move forward with the group II doulas, they were readily accessible and responsive to all of my questions and concerns (regardless of how silly they seemed). After the birth class and pre-natal visit we felt prepared and educated about our birth choices and came up with a "birth plan" that was tailored specifically to our needs and desires. For example, we discussed things such as my hope to have an unmedicated birth, what to pack, the preferred ambiance in the hospital room, and even what playlists to make.

On the day of our daughter's birth we were fortunate enough to have Casey as our doula. We honestly could not have asked for a better doula/person to go through this experience with. Casey was warm, encouraging, and clearly born to be a doula. She helped me labor at home for as long as possible and once it was time to go to the hospital she took charge. She was familiar with the hospital (WHC), managed hospital staff, worked hand and hand with our midwife, and suggested various things my husband could do that were both helpful and meaningful during the birth. Casey was able to strike the perfect balance between compassion and motivation. Her involvement did not stop when our daughter was born. Casey followed-up with us for weeks after to check in. She is simply THE. BEST.

From the initial orientation to the birth of our baby every experience with DC Birth Doulas II was everything I wanted.

DC Birth Doulas II were amazing. We met everyone at the Meet the Doulas event in January. Malaika came to our home to do our prenatal visit a few weeks later, and then Casey was on call and ended up being there for the birth of our son in April. I loved that they all work so closely and collaboratively. Any questions I had before going into labor were answered by at least one of the doulas, if not more. They were very accessible and responsive to all of my questions ahead of time. I really liked that they practice as a group, so there's no fear of your doula having some emergency come up and being unable to make it to your delivery. Casey was super professional, but really personable and I absolutely wouldn't have made it through labor without an epidural if it wasn't for her support. Having a doula was really helpful when the nurses and doctors were throwing information at us that we couldn't keep track of. Casey helped to translate everything and walk us through what was happening. The DC Birth Doulas II are the less-experience group of doulas (as compared to regular DC Birth Doulas), but I feel that they were just as capable at helping me through the birth of my son. I would recommend DC Birth Doulas to anyone!

We simply cannot imagine navigating what we now know of our birth story without the guidance of our DC Birth Doula, Casey. While the meetings & check-ins & birth classes with the DC Birth Doulas were great while I was pregnant, my birth story really begins when my induction was scheduled at 42 weeks & I sat on the phone crying to my doula while she explained to me what was most likely going to transpire. She listened to me, told me it was okay to be upset & encouraged me that everything was STILL going to be great & I was going to get a baby, which was the goal! While all signs pointed to me having an uncomplicated, natural delivery, baby had other plans, & we ended up having to make a lot of decisions & endure some very scary moments before we met our son. Having Casey there was beyond integral to our experience, as she was calm & level-headed, able to explain things to us and make us feel like we weren't the first parents to go through this situation even at 3am when my husband was falling asleep standing up & I could barely form a sentence between contractions.

The best way I can explain it is that having a doula was like adding a third person to our team - A third person that has been there & seen that, & can explain things to you in plain English. Casey supported us in our decision making processes & had a great repertoire with the staff of the hospital, which created an incredible dynamic in the labor & delivery room, especially when things got intense. After our birth, having our doula come over & walk us through our birth story was an amazingly healing & emotional process, as she broke down the events of the birth to us. She filled in so many blanks for us & helped us process the entire 48 hours of labor - Many things were news to me! We are so grateful that Casey was there and cannot imagine having another baby without a doula by our side. Thanks, DC Birth Doulas!

We cannot recommend DC Birth Doulas II enough! We decided at 7.5 months that we wanted a doula for our first birth having just moved to the DC area away from friends and family. Because we were so late into my pregnancy, Casey set up video chats with each member of the team. We felt comfortable, they knew our hospital well (GW), and they seemed more excited and engaged than some of the more veteran doulas we spoke to. We also loved that they would meet us at home and make sure we were fed before leaving us.

At our prenatal appointment Casey was wonderful. She listened to what we wanted (a natural birth but open to the possibility of medication), answered questions we had, and offered a few suggestions.

A week later I went into labor at 2am and Casey was on-call. Knowing I wanted to avoid being at the hospital too soon, Casey helped my husband figure out when we needed to leave and came to our home to support us for the ride to the hospital. I don’t think we would have survived the car ride without Casey’s massaging, gentle coaching, and reminders of when the contraction would pass. Casey was calm, reassuring, and responsive throughout the rest of my labor. She offered suggestions, helped us to understand medical interventions that were suggested, and fully supported our decisions.

Even after our son was born she continued to help with first latch, captured a photo of our first moments as a family, and, true to her word, got us food to eat before leaving. And that wasn’t all, Casey also checked in with us throughout the following 2 weeks to answer questions and help me through some breastfeeding pain, even before our post-natal visit.

We had a wonderful, natural birth experience and it wouldn’t have been possible without Casey. If we are still in the area for baby number 2, we won’t hesitate to get the support of Casey and the rest of the DC Birth Doulas II!

I really enjoyed working with the DC Birth Doulas II team.  They were friendly, supportive, and just generally wonderful to work with.  They were very responsive prior to the birth and were quick to answer questions or respond to concerns.

Jen did my prenatal session.  She was very patient and understanding when working with us.  She was instrumental in helping us think through our hopes and concerns about the birth.  She got us to think about a number of things that hadn't even crossed our mind before, and we ended the session feeling better prepared for the big day.

Casey was on call when I went into labor. As a first time mom, I was so anxious and felt like I had no idea what was going on. She was great at providing information and support about the process as it progressed and did a fabulous job of helping me stay calm. My labor progressed unusually quickly, and she jumped in the car at a moment's notice to come meet us at the hospital. My goal was to try to have a completely natural birth. I almost caved and asked for an epidural in the few minutes I was at the hospital before she arrived. However, once she got there, she was able to help me stay calm and manage the pain so that in the end, I was able to have the natural birth that I wanted. My husband also really enjoyed working with Casey. He said he was really grateful that Casey made him feel included in the birth process so that he could be part of my support system.  She also balanced being really respectful of giving us enough space to bond as a family as soon as my son was born but also accompanying us until we felt settled into my room. She even continued to check-in with us in addition to the postnatal session to make sure were were adjusting well, a nice extra touch.

I felt like the team really cared about us and making sure we had a positive birth experience.  It's not just a job to them.  I would highly recommend them to anyone.

DC Doulas were the best DOULAS! I really appreciated their assistance for my birthing experience. They returned my calls/emails promptly when I was investigating on who to go with. Once it was decided we would work together, Jen and Casey came over and discussed my first birth and how I would like my birthing experience with my 2nd birth to be like. They were so approachable. Once it was established we would work together, I spoke to all the doulas. I could only talk over the phone and not meet in person, it was lovely. All of them, even over the phone were approachable and just great to talk to. The Doulas kept checking in on me when the time came closer for my due date. I was late and DC Doulas offered to help me walk around, aka keep me company and try to get labor moving. It was so kind of them.

When the day came, I was paired with Jen. She was great. She talked to me over the phone to make sure I was feeling good. Jen came promptly to the hospital. Helped us so much through the birth, helping my husband by telling him how to massage me and help me up to give birth. She was so comforting, even though we just talked over the phone and met once. I was so appreciative of her presence. It made everything go so smooth. I would definitely go with DC Doulas.

I had the very good fortune of working with Casey for the birth of my second son, and I loved working with her! I'm so grateful that we connected with DC Birth Doulas II, and with Casey in particular.

I had also had the extreme good fortune of working with Mary when my first son was born - since she was with DC Birth Doulas when I was looking for a doula this time around, I was excited to be able to explore the option of DC Birth Doulas II this time.

From our very first phone call, Casey was open and engaged and supportive - it was clear that she loved this work, and also that she was interested in hearing what my husband and I specifically needed and in working with us as an individual family. She was also flexible throughout, coming to see us for an extra in-person meeting before our birth and helping us with additional resources after our son arrived.

But what matters most of course is the birth itself -- and I honestly could not be happier with how wonderfully Casey supported us! She was exactly the presence that I needed - good, practical ideas to help things go well (from 'it might help if I put pressure here' to 'get your shoes on, it's time to go.. now!'), very very good listening and being extremely responsive to what I was asking for and needed, and then just this reassuring and loving and solid presence that made me feel so supported and taken care of in a way that made it easier for me to do what my body needed. My husband also especially appreciated that she made it easier for him to be helpful - giving him some good specific ideas for how he could best support me.

Casey met us at our house near the beginning of my labor, and stayed with us until after we were settled in our room after delivery (including making a run out to bring us breakfast). We're very grateful to have had Casey with us throughout - I'm so lucky to have had her on my birth team!

I cannot recommend DC Birth Doulas enough, they were fantastic and helped my husband and I through our first birth recently. We contacted them a bit late, only a few weeks before my due date, nonetheless they were all extremely flexible, friendly, and helpful during those last few weeks (we worked with the whole team up until the home visit, then we worked with Malaika exclusively). I loved the fact that it was a team effort which meant that each doula is backed up by the others, so no matter what, we would be supported by someone on the team.  When it came time for our birth, it was Malaika (and Jen, who was shadowing Malaika) who worked with us and they were amazing!  I honestly feel like we couldn't have done it without them, especially since my induction went much longer than usual (39 hours!). Both of them were incredibly supportive, encouraging, and empowering.  It gave me confidence and strength to get through the labor and delivery to have them there, helping us with different coping techniques, taking pictures, giving my husband a break (to eat, make phone calls, etc) interpreting the directions of the nurse and doctors, and digging up the courage we needed to get through the unusually long and arduous induction.  I think the most important thing I wanted out of my birth experience was confidence, and that's exactly what I felt (and what my husband felt) with Malaika and Jen by our sides, coaching us through the scariest and most intense experience in our lives.  DC Birth Doulas II were awesome and I cannot recommend them enough!!

We had a great experience with DC Birth Doulas II — highly recommended. We knew we wanted to contract with DC Birth Doulas after hearing some great things from friends, but when we contacted the practice about the delivery of our first child, the original practice was full. They referred us to their apprentice program, and we had a great experience with it.

I can only speak to our own delivery experience, but because we weren't anticipating a particularly complicated delivery, we felt comfortable contracting with the apprentice program. I didn't feel like we were sacrificing anything by going with them. We worked with Casey Runck for our birth (you can read more about our great experience with her on her individual profile page) and I had a few phone conversations with Malaika in the lead-up to my delivery. Every interaction we had with DC Birth Doulas II was friendly and professional, and we had the sense that we were in good hands.

What's also great about the practice is they're willing to work with many different styles, whether you're delivering at GW or Sibley, having a c-section or a vaginal delivery, natural birth or using an epidural, they seemed well-equipped to handle whatever your concerns might be. It was a pleasure working with them.

My husband and I were interested in finding a doula for the birth of our first child. After attending a birth class run by DC Birth Doulas, we were even more convinced that we wanted to find a doula to provide support during our birth experience. Having looked into options and finding that the cost could be quite prohibitive, our DCBD birth class instructor recommended the DC Birth Doulas - II Apprentice Program. Our class instructor specifically recommended Malaika. After a phone conversation and an in-person meeting, we felt very comfortable with Malaika and decided to move forward with selecting her as our doula. We could not have made a better choice!

My husband and I (and Malaika) were very surprised when my water broke unexpectedly, a month early, which started my birth experience on a very different path than I had originally hoped. Malaika was present during the majority of my difficult labor and provided an incredible amount of support. She cheered me on through difficult moments, helped with positioning to ease pain and move labor along, rubbed my back, and added a sense of calm to an at times scary process. She was also a huge support to my husband. He was able to leave the room for a few minutes here and there to take care of himself during the long labor without feeling concerned about leaving me alone. Malaika is warm, genuine, adaptable, and committed to providing families the birth experience they desire. Having her present during the birth of my baby girl will forever connect us and I could not be more grateful for her support and calm demeanor during such a beautiful experience.

We recommend Malaika without reservations! She is truly passionate about the work she does and is a great choice for anyone looking for a extra support during their labor and delivery.

I selected DC Birth Doulas II--the Apprentice Program because of its affordability and because they are a multiple person practice, rather than a one woman practice. This was important to me because I didn't want to run the risk of being without a doula because my doula was tied up with another laboring woman! I initially went for affordability but the services I received more than paid themselves back and then some! My apprentice doula, Casey, was worth her weight in gold. She did so much more than just attend my birth. We went for walks, she was in contact, but not too pushy or invasive during the weeks leading up to my birth, she was available to answer questions--and the day that I did go into labor she stayed by my side for 27 out of the 30 hours of my labor. She made it possible for me and my husband to have an amazing and informed birth experience. I had to have a C-Section instead of the unmedicated, natural childbirth I had envisioned--and Casey was just as supportive, prepared, and non-judgemental as if I had stuck to my original plan. I would highly recommend the apprentice program of DC Birth Doulas, you won't be disappointed. And if you have doubts or second-thoughts after hiring them, know this: they ARE worth the price, and they do more for a laboring woman than can be accurately put into words.
I also took the birth class that is offered by DCBD and that was phenomenal and worth the price as well. I'm glad we took it as it went over every aspect of birth, and made me aware of some things that I wasn't researching on my own. Pick DC Birth Doulas. You will not regret your decision.

I can't say enough wonderful things about our experience with DC Birth Doulas II. My husband and I were not convinced that working with a doula was the right choice for us, so much so that I was 39 weeks pregnant before I reached out to them! As it turns out, I started early labor the same night that we had our initial consultation with Casey. Despite the very quick turnaround, I immediately trusted her and felt like we had been working together for months. My husband and I say that it was the best money we ever spent.

I ended up working with Casey and Liz specifically and felt supported, encouraged, and safe throughout the entire process. Casey took my intial questions via phone, acting calmly and knowledgely while advising me on what to do doing early labor and when to contact the hospital. She was proactive in her support and put me at ease during a couple of scary moments. Without her I likely would have panicked and completley mis-timed going to the hospital. She and Liz supported me together in-person during the birth-- they were so experienced, kind, funny, knowledgable and very in-tune with what I needed. They did everything including back massage, positioning me to move labor along, verbal encouragement, explanations, etc. etc. I can confidentantly say that my birth experience was 10 times better working with them. I never imagined how much working with a doula would do for me -- we can't imagine going through the process again without their specific support if we opt for a second child. This team went above and beyond what was expected or required because they truly love what they do. We give them our highest reccommendation (and from two initially skeptical people!) They made an incredible experience even more wonderful.
