Our experience was so wonderful that I had to jump at the chance to write this review. I never write reviews for anything because my husband and I are always so busy with work, activities and now our amazing baby. But here we go:
Phoebe helped us feel so prepared before the fact. When I spoke to other expecting mothers it was apparent my husband and I knew so much more about the process of being pregnant and what to expect, and I credit that to Phoebe. She walked us through every single step of pregnancy and birth. Even what the doctors will say in different scenarios.
The most important thing, and I cannot stress this enough, is that she never imposed her beliefs on us. Of course she made available alternative ways of thinking about birth, but she never told us we had to do anything her way. She simply prepared us by informing us of all the methods and let us choose our method depending upon what we were comfortable with.
She got along great with the nurses in the hospital, and this makes a big difference, because you kind of get an eyeroll when you first check in with a doula from the hospital staff. But she is so great interacting with them that they are super happy to have her there once you are in the thick of it.
I wish I could write a novel about my experience with Phoebe because we were so happy with her.
Good luck mamas and papas!!
Phoebe is the best of the best. I had never met her before being referred by a contact, but she almost instantly became part of our family. Each doula has their own packages and do things differently, and I believe Phoebe's approach is so spot on in getting you and your family fully prepared physically and mentally for birth, supporting you through the birth, and helping with the transition into motherhood postpartum and the postpartum family as a whole. She practiced different natural comfort measures with my husband and I during the pregnancy, she taught us about all the options and risks/advantages to different types of births and interventions and she did lots of meditation/mental healing work with me prenatally. During the birth, she kept me going when it felt like I couldn't go anymore. She knew the ins and outs of a hosptial birth and how to support me to have a natural birth in an unnatural setting. My baby came into this world so calmly because of all the support I got from her and my husband who was much more prepared this second time around.
My postpartum experience was so amazing it's hard to put into words. I felt so respected this time, and was able to do so much healing from my first traumatic birth and postpartum experience. I physically recovered so quickly, and I felt so present with my baby not needing to worry so much about my own discomfort. Phoebe taught me traditions from the Mexican culture that felt like such a perfect fit into our bicultural family. She fed me and helped me close up my body and my mind to wrap up my birth experience and transition into being a mother of two.
Thanks for all your love and support Phoebe :)
I have had 2 other natural births both in hospital without a doula. While those were good experiences for me, this last birth with Phoebe as my doula was extra special! She has been a good friend of mine for 20 years (wow crazy) so when she decided to take the doula route as a career I was beyond excited!!! She is the perfect person for this career. Not only does she have 3 beautiful children of her own but her passion and knowledge in women's health and birth is exceptional. I delivered my 4th child at Pomerado Hospital with Phoebe by my side. The nurses were very respectful (and helpful) as was Phoebe of course... she helped and guided my mom and husband to get me through contractions. It was an all day event!! Things were moving slow to start so she also worked her magic to get things going... Phoebe was just amazing! I still think about how special my last birth was with my friend/doula by my side!
Phoebe Islas has a natural gift for birth work. She was invaluable to my family throughout our prenatal, labor & delivery, and postpartum process. I recommend her whole-heartedly.
Phoebe was the right match for us. She is nurturing, grounded & knowledgable. Her most meaningful attributes:
1) When it comes down to being IN ACTION, I can't imagine anyone better. I was a first time Mom, and endured a 29 hour labor. My husband and I really wanted an intervention & drug free birth if possible. Phoebe was positively essential in enabling me to do just that! She knew just what tool to use when-- massage, herbs, "spinning babies" techniques, sound, reassurance... She was truly amazing. She empowered me to make it through and birth a healthy baby mindfully.
2) She's a talented herbalist. This showed up many times: prenatally in a salve that helped heal a major issue I was having and in helping progress labor.
3) Phoebe studies & practices folk medicine. This is not wooey nonsense, it's real skill from beyond a Eurocentric frame work of healing. It shows up beautifully throughout her work.
4) She also utilizes the best of contemporary natural birth practices, like Hypnobirthing & 'Birthing from Within' techniques. Thiese manifest in prenatal visits & labor.
5) She gives Postpartum care! This was a big deal for me. She comes to your home twice after birth, cooks for you, teaches you baby massage, draws you an herbal bath, massages your aching body, offers ceremony... . It is truly healing & helped me step for gracefully into motherhood.
6) She offers sliding scale for her work based on your income: integrity.
Phoebe can offer a lot of information, so I think she is best for people who enjoy that, want to inform & empower themselves through birth, and are decently organized in their life. If that's you, the choosing Phoebe as your Doula is an absolute gift of a lifetime.
I knew that when I chose Phoebe as my doula, she would be a blessing to my labor and birth, however it was to turn out. She brings a sense of calm and grounded energy to any situation, and I can truly attest to this because she helped me birth my baby in her car on the way to the birth center! But let me back up a bit...
The trust I have in Phoebe not only came from her knowledge of natural birth, prenatal care, and herbs. It was her grounded energy, her maternal intuition, the gentle strength of her words and touch, and her connection to the divine feminine. It is as though generations of mothers work through her as she helps guide women through the transformation of birth.
While I was pregnant, Phoebe empowered me with information to make the best choices for my care. She listened as I cried through hormonal changes. She helped me stretch and prepare for labor with different breathing techniques and positions. She massaged my aching, changing body. She prepared the herbs I needed and fed me in body and spirit.
When the big day came, it was incredibly fast! Little did I know I was in transition; it was so intense! And Phoebe's gentle, grounded voice was there, calming the storm. When she placed pressure on my lower back, I couldn't believe the relief. She knew just what to do.
Within minutes of her arrival, she realized baby was coming soon. We made it 5 minutes from my home when I shouted, "pull over!" Swiftly this mama goddess acted, and in one push, my son's head emerged. Calmly she told me to wait and breathe; and little did I know that she was unwrapping the cord from around his neck. The second push and he was born into her arms.
I have told Phoebe that she should become a midwife someday, because the wisdom is in her soul already. Like any birth, mine was not what I expected, and I wouldn't change a thing. When I look back on my journey, I feel infinite gratitude that it was Phoebe who helped guide my baby into the world.
