As a registered nurse in the newborn intensive care unit for 27 years, my job has been two fold. I care for intensive care infants, and I also care for the parents by educating and supporting them as they become proficient in caring for their baby and learning to read their cues.

Carolyn helped with my 4th baby. She was lovely to have as a postpartum doula. She held the baby and watched my others so I could shower, helped with laundry, and dinner prep/clean up. It was so nice to have someone else there on hectic days. You know those times you wish you had an extra you or extra set of hands? Carolyn is wonderful as help during those times. I would recommend her to any parent .
When searching for a postpartum doula, Carolyn stood out to my husband and me because of her age and experience. Carolyn doesn’t fit the conventional mold for a postpartum doula, which, for us, made her an absolutely wonderful helper in our household right after our baby’s birth.
Carolyn has a very unassuming presence—perfect for postpartum work. She was not chatty unless I clearly wanted to chat with her. She did not give advice unless I specifically asked for it. She had *extensive* medical knowledge about newborns, breastfeeding, and new mothers (as she said about her NICU nursing career, “I have no idea what to with an adult who’s not lactating!”). Even after her work with us was complete, we continued to stay in touch to ask Carolyn clarifying medical questions.
Carolyn is familiar with all the current trends in motherhood and babies. She took easily took to our cloth diapers and even taught me a thing or two about maintaining them. She helped me understand and learn my breastpump, pumping, and milk storage guidelines. She practiced bottle feeding with my husband. If Carolyn did not know the answer to a question I asked her, she’d research it online and get back to me. No topic was off limit to her research, from the best clothes for pumping to what to do around Richmond when family came to visit.
To top it all off, she clearly LOVES babies. Every time our baby fell asleep on Carolyn, Carolyn glowed with comfort and our newborn slept deeply. She’s simply the kind of person who bonds with newborns but never in a way that compromised our baby’s primary relationship with mom and dad.
Carolyn told us that she got into postpartum doula work to have something to do once she retires from nursing. I, for one, cannot wait for that retirement, because then she’ll be even more available to even more moms as, in my opinion, the top postpartum doula in the Richmond area.
