Birth Fee: $500 to $1100
Fee Details: Fees for my services range from $500 to $1100. Working with a sliding scale based on combined household income, the average family in our area pays about $600-$700. Although a 50% retaining fee is required when you decide to hire me to guarantee my availability, I also permit clients to make payments in any increments that work for them, provided that the remaining amount is received by our last post birth visit. Some families want a "Birth Story," a written narrative of the birth process; this option adds $120. If finances are an issue, I am open to negotiation. As well, there are doulas available who are finished their training, but need to get more experience so they can be certified. I can help connect you with one of these doulas, who can assist you with your labour for as little as $200 to cover their expenses. Please check out my website for more info. www.smallwonders.com

In the fall of 2009, when Interior Health had to withdraw their free breastfeeding classes and breastfeeding drop-in assistance due to H1N1 preparations, my colleague, Nicki Albrecht and I organized, and provided these services at Trinity Baptist Church. As in the past, I continue to provide some pro bono labour support to single moms, as well as other underserviced families.

Our midwife highly recommended hiring a doula and I’m so glad we had Wendy as the birth of our first couldn’t have gone better for my husband and I. We would recommend her to anyone because she shares her wealth of experience before, during, and after the labour. She armed us with the most up to date information leading up to the due date, so we felt prepared and ready. Her support during labour was essential with endless ideas to make things as comfortable as possible! I still can’t believe I laboured and delivered unmedicated. She was so caring, attentive and never tired out the whole day. I felt secure with her help and so did my husband. Her postpartum support helped us get through the first weeks as parents. She’s a true caregiver.
We first met Wendy attending her birthing classes. We were new to Kelowna and I was 7 months pregnant with our first child. She was a wealth of knowledge and had so much great advice during the class of how she helps families through labour, delivery, and breastfeeding support. Since we were new to the area, without local friends and family, and my husband wasn't sure how well he would do during labour and delivery, we asked Wendy to be our doula. We were so lucky she was available.
She was a calm energy and so helpful and knowledgeable throughout the experience. Although I ended up needing medical interventions (induced/epidural) due to the circumstances of the birth she walked us through our choices so we made the best possible decisions for us. She worked with me through every contraction (with breathing, massage, tens machine, and suggestions of position), helped my husband to take part and help, and was extremely supportive in my recovery and learning to breastfeed. After this I joked that I wouldn't consider getting pregnant again without checking her schedule.
About a year and a half later I contacted Wendy again to let her know I was pregnant with our second child. She was available again and right away I looked to her for advice as I was considering trying a midwife rather than a doctor this time. She gave me lots of information on pros and cons and I decided to give it a try. This pregnancy went even better than the first and I was able to spend the early labour at home with Wendy's support. Things progressed quickly in the end, our midwife came and we ended having a home birth. Again Wendy was an amazing support offering encouragement, suggestions, and massage throughout. I can't imagine either labour without her there. With her extensive experience as a mother, grandmother, nurse, midwife assistant, and doula, she is such an amazing resource and support. She is worth every penny and more!
Wendy was our doula for our first baby. She was absolutely amazing. We were feeling a bit overwhelmed leading up to the birth. However after hiring Wendy, much of our apprehension was eliminated. Her calming approach and weath of knowledge put our minds at ease.
On the day of the birth, Wendy (as always) responded immediately. She came to our house and guided me through the contractions and helped us understand when to go to the hospital. Throughout she guided us through the process. lt was so great to have someone present who understands the process and the hospital system. She was amazing at assisting me with me pain as well - always knowing which areas to apply pressure and massage to. I cannot imagine labouring without her support and guidance. She ensured that my husband was involved and also allowed him time to rest when he needed it.
After the birth, Wendy stayed with us until we were feeling comfortable on the maternity ward. She then visited several times in the days and weeks following the birth. She also checked in via text and phone. It was a god-send having her to support me in those precarious first few weeks.
Wendy kept careful documentation of the entire birth process and gave us a comprehensive summary of the birth story. This keepsake is something we will treasure.
In summary, we cannot say enough about the amazing support and guidance Wendy provided us. I cannot imagine doing it without her. We look forward to working with her for baby #2

This was my first pregnancy; I didnt know what to expect. I was sceptical and nervous about the whole process, including the labour part. When my husband and I met with Wendy, we were greeted with such knowledge, experience, and excitement. Wendy let us borrow books, gave us different studies, and answered any questions we had.
When I went into labour, Wendy was there from the get go. It was very calming and reassuring that she had our back and was with us the whole time.
From the guy's perspective, it was great having a highly skilled doula to guide us through the whole process! I had no idea about pretty much anything coming into this and having someone to tell you "this is a normal thing" and "you should eat something" really helped us both of us. We went a lot of hours without sleeping much and having that extra person to take care of things and give us both a break now and then was wonderful! One of the best parts was having someone to answer my hundreds of questions and reassure us that we were doing great! I would recommend a doula to anyone expecting a little one. Especially if it's your first child! The thing that made me want to hire a doula in the first place was I figured the whole time around birth is intensely challenging so why not have a highly trained, very encouraging, doula in our corner!
I'm so glad that we met Wendy! Her calm ways and bountiful knowledge set our minds at ease. I would ask her to be our doula again if and when we have another little bundle of joy!
Wendy was a fantastic addition to our birth team. She was always quick to offer help and suggestions when asked, and worked with us to make sure her services matched our needs and interests. Our first child was born without a doula and I can't get over what a positive difference Wendy made to the experience. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend her.
Being first time parents, we were uncerctain of what to expect from the labour and birth experience. We believed that birth should proceed naturally with little medical intervention (unless necessary) but felt that we needed an experienced 3rd party like Wendy to to provide support and to advocate on our behalf. Wendy's support throughout pregnancy, labor & delivery and recovery was invaluable. Not only did she provide ample support in the months leading up to the birth of our son Kaden but her tireless physical and emotional support throughout labour and delivery kept us both calm and confident. After the birth Wendy again provided valuable emotional and practical support by assisting with breast feeding. She spent what felt like hours in the hospital and after discharge helping us settle into our new roles as parents whilst providing valuable resources we could reference should additional support be needed. Thank you Wendy!
Wendy's presence at the birth of both of our children was invaluable. She brings a calm, reassuring spirit that provides support and encouragement throughout labour. Wendy goes above and beyond and will exceed your expectations. She provides information and support before baby's arrival, and she is a fountain of information and experience after baby has arrived. I am so grateful to Wendy for her role in bringing our children into the world. I can't imagine having done it without her.
