Maurissa Messier

I've known Karen Dalton for about four years. She was a friend of my husband, but quickly became a friend of mine. Ironically, before I knew that Karen wanted to be a doula, I had asked her to be by acting doula/support person while I went through labor and delivery. Her knowledge and experience with child birth in addition to our shared beliefs was enough for me to know that she'd be a great resource during this intense time. The last time I had engaged wtih a doula, I didn't feel the level of support and guidance I had hoped for. She didn't seem to offer more than what I would have done on my own. As Karen and I started planning and preparing for my birth, Karen continued to share a lot of great information and resources with me. She met with me and my husband multiple times and made herself available 24x7 leading up to delivery. When I did go into labor, things started moving quickly. This was at 6am. Immediately we called Karen and from that point on, Karen was by our side. Literally she stayed on the line while my husband drove us to L&D where we met her within minutes of my arrival. She continued to stay by our side for the next 20 hours. She played an integral role in supporting both my husband and me. From helping me breath through contractions, to finding ways to relax and experience the birth to insightful views, ideas and communications with my hospital team. Even during a few minutes of high-stress when the baby's heartbeat became irregular, she helped me, but more so my husband to reassure us that we were ok and in good hands. She blurred the lines perfectly. I never felt pressure; always felt supported. I had a safe and healthy vbac with my baby girl and believe that Karen played a big role in this outcome. I would recommend Karen to anyone wanting additional support during the birthing process. It's a magical moment, and Karen helped me keep this perspective and manage my emotions so I could enjoy it from start to finish.
