I am extremely happy that we hired Bethany for our first birth. We had no idea what to expect despite the 12 week Bradley classes we went to for baby preparations. When the big day arrived, she met us at the hospital and coached me through breathing and relaxing (I managed to arrive at the hospital at 7cm dilated...we knew I would be pushing soon). I was apprehensive before about this “coaching”, but in the middle of it all, all her coaching was 100% necessary. It was hard to focus, but with her coaching, it helped remind me what I needed to be doing.
Also my body was not as flexible as I thought it was, and she was able to coach my husband to help alleviate the pain because both of them had to do the remedy together. She was able to give my husband some breaks as he needed. It was very reassuring to have her by my side. I ended up having an unplanned c-section, and she waited in the recovery room while I was waking up from anesthesia. She checked to make sure we were all okay before heading out.
After I arrived home, Bethany did a post visit and helped me figure out my breast pump. I did not take it to the hospital with me when I should have. I was thankful that Bethany was familiar with the model I had. Sometimes it’s just quicker for someone to show you than reading the instructions. We really appreciated having Bethany there and it was one of the best decisions we made. We plan to hire Bethany again with our next child.
Having Bethany during labor was the best decision my husband and I could’ve made! She was very supportive with the choices I decided about my labor. Before going into labor we met several times to discuss all the paperwork and my child birth plan. She was open to traveling to my house and other locations that were convenient for me. I was 1 week overdue and Bethany would message or call to check up on me frequently which made me feel comfortable. The day I went into labor she was quick to get a hold of and was ready for my labor. She was extremely positive and kept reminding me of my goal. I was in so much pain, but Bethany kept calm, counted my contractions and guided my husband to help me throughout the entire labor. She also advocated for me when the nurses kept insisting on the epidural and getting pitocin even though my contractions were back to back. She is an amazing doula who is full of knowledge and genuinely cares for the mothers she is treating! In the end I didn’t end up using all the techniques we had planned for, but I am glad she was there to help me through my first pregnancy! Thanks to her I had a great natural labor with no medicine intervention. I will definitely give her a call when my husband and I decide to have the next one!
** She also visited and called me after the baby was born to check up on us, which was great because as a new mommy it was nice to have someone to answer my questions and share my thoughts with.
Bethany is a great doula to invest in. She has plenty of raw talent and a natural aptitude for being part of a birth support system. During my birth, I really enjoyed her fresh, creative approach to helping me be comfortable. I was able to achieve my natural unmedicmated childbirth in a hospital (attended by midwives)-- a normally harsh and unwelcoming environment-- in relative comfort due to Bethany's sense of aesthetic. She made sure the overhead lights were dimmed and she brought Christmas lights which she strung on just the right place on the bed to create a cozy atmosphere so I could relax.
This excellent observational ability, of course, also translated to being able to read my cues to better advocate for me. I'm not really a person that expresses outwardly while I'm focused or in pain, but she was able to pick up on how I was feeling and what my body was doing. My midwife and nurse had about 30 years of combined experience, but Bethany was the only one who figured out I wasn't ready to push despite being 10 cm. I still don't know how she figured it out just from watching me! Being able to notice these things is vital to helping a mom stay in the right mindset and being that exact advocate between patient and care provider that a good doula is supposed to be. I know with more experience Bethany will continue to grow into possibly one of the best doulas, due to her natural observancy, soft touch, and keen intuition--valuable things that can't be learned, only developed. Not only did she help me, she put my terrified husband at ease by explaining what I was experiencing, calmly, and in plain terms. She was a vital part of my birth support team and any new mom would be lucky to have her there.
Working with Bethany was one of the best decisions I made when it came to the delivery of my first child. Bethany did an excellent job preparing me for everything to expect as it relates to before, during, and after labor and she honored my birth plan without question. She was always there throughout the process for support and to answer any questions I had. During the labor, Bethany's coaching was outstanding. I would listen for her soothing voice and presence to help me through painful contractions. She knew her place when to step in and take charge and when to step back and allow the people to do what they need to do. She was truly amazing and I had a fantastic delivery experience as a result. She is both a wonderful and warm person to be around and passionate about being a doula. I would recommend her to anyone.
Bethany was recommended to me by the child birth class instructor. I am so happy I called her. She made sure my birth experience was everything I wanted and more. She is easy going, compassionate, and knowledgeable. She took the time to get to know my situation and the kind of birth I wanted. She encouraged me to educate myself about the birth process by recommending books and techniques. When it came closer to my due date, she checked in to see how I was feeling. When it came to the big day, she was accessible - I was able to text her questions about whether I was I'm labor, contractions, and when to go to the hospital. When I finally asked her to comw join me at the hospital, she arrived quickly and jumped right in. She suggested different positions and encouraged me to find what was most comfortable. She breathed along with me (which helped remind me to breathe) and helped me relax through massage. All the while, she was cheering me on. She remained confident in my ability to give birth unmwdicated, which in turn gave me confidence in myself. When it was time to push, she helped me focus, helped hold my legs, and counted while reminding me to breathe. After he was born, she stayed with me and distracted me while I was getting stitched up. She stayed with me until I was moved and settled in the recovery room. She made herself available to answer any questions postpartum and offered support and company.
Overall, I wouldn't change a thing. Throughout the whole process I kept thanking Bethany because she was truly a godsend. I do not think that I would have been able to have an unmedicated birth. She was a great support and never overstepped her boundaries - she never pushed her beliefs on me nor directed the nurses out my care. If and when I get pregnant again, I will definitely ask her to be my Doula. She just helped make it such an incredible experience - I honestly can't say enough great things about her! Thank you!!
