Wife: Melissa is amazing! I was able to have an unmedicated hospital birth with our first child back in July. We met before to make sure we felt comfortable with the choice to work with a doula which I really appreciated. We were able to go over our plan so we were all on the same page. She answered at 2am when I called her to tell her I was in labor and she stayed calm for me and responded quickly. She gave encouragement when I needed it and suggestions that helped me cope. She was wonderful at letting my husband do what he wanted to and felt comfortable with then taking care of everything else. She stayed for a bit after until we got settled into our room and were ready to be with family. I know we couldn't have had our ideal birth without her and I will definitely be calling her when it's time for number two to join our family.
Husband: I enjoyed having Melissa be part of our birth. She was the backup that I needed as a first time dad. Having her with us helped me understand the process better. She also helped allow me to do what I wanted to and be comfortable doing it.
Melissa is a treasure!! She truly is wonderful to have. She has so many skills to help before the birth as well as after. She is a certified massage therapist, knows a ton about birth (obviously) and afterward, she is great too. I consider her a good friend and someone who has experienced my best times (and worst!) and doesn't judge me. She is a great presence to have in a room when you are giving birth and has your back with whatever your requests are. She made my birth plan for me.
Melissa truly takes the anxiety and stress out of the situation when preparing for birth, during birth (as much as can be expected, its still hard, obviously) and after.
I'm so glad that fate brought us to have the opportunity to have Melissa. She is spectacular and when we have more kids, she will be there (hopefully!! fingers crossed) to help us with one of the most important experiences of our lives.
Melissa was the perfect doula for our family! We interviewed several before we decided who we wanted and her personality was just perfect for us. She fit in well with my husband’s constant jokes yet was maternal enough to help me feel protected. I had a fairly traumatic pregnancy that involved preterm labor several times and three months of bedrest and Melissa was there for us through it all! She supported us in everything we wanted and when delivery couldn‘t go perfectly (understandable considering our twins we’re born early!) she helped me see the positive and to see how blessed I really was. Her calm demeanor and her ability to mesh in with us helped SO much and made me feel less traumatized. Because of Melissa I feel invincible.
Melissa was our doula for the birth of our first child. We really appreciated how easy it was to talk with her and how she was able to explain a lot of things very clearly. She was also great about communicating with us and would always get back to us right away. While our birth plan ended up going differently than we expected, it was super helpful to have another person there supporting us and Melissa's knowledge of the body was very useful. She used massage techniques that really helped me manage the pain better than I would have otherwise.
I just gave birth to a beautiful and healthy baby girl on December 8, 2017. My husband, Brian, and I wanted a doula because we were planning a natural/unmedicated hospital birth. My midwife had recommended a doula to me, and we decided to at least meet and talk with some- Melissa was our girl. I knew from moment we met with her that she was the perfect fit- professional, but very warm personality.
The day I went into labor, Melissa was there for support. My labor actually lasted THREE days before my daughter was born, and Melissa came to our house twice to check-up on me and try out some techniques. After her second visit to the house and trying some rebozo and inversion techniques, I went into active labor early that next morning.
In the end, my birth did not go the way that I had hoped. The baby was posterior and my labor stopped progressing. I also developed a uterine infection and hadn't slept for three days straight. My midwife and Melissa tried numerous things to help make me more comfortable to get labor started again. An intervention was imminent, and I knew the only way I was going to get through this was with some rest. That meant I would need an epidural. I was disappointed, but Melissa was incredibley supportive and reminded me that I had used every natural avenue thus far. She really made me believe that it was the best decision for the situation I was in.
Throughout all of my labor she was extremely helpful to my husband. They were able to switch on and off so I always had someone there for me that was rested and on their game. She also was able to remind Brian of techniques we learned in our birth class and guide him. My husband was very grateful to have Melissa there, and their calm, cool and collected personalities really meshed well together.
If you're trying to decide if you want a doula, if you want Melissa as your doula, or if a doula in general is worth it, just hire Melissa! It is worth it!
My wife and I recently had our first child at the end of Aug, 2017. Melissa Olson was our doula for this birth which took place at a hospital.
We found Melissa to be increadibly helpful. She met with us twice before my wife went into labor and gave us excellent coaching tips and helped us prepare for labor. When my wife went into labor we called Melissa and she gave us the option of coming to our hosue or meeting us at the hospital. We had her meet us at the hospital. My wife was in labor for 27hrs and Melissa was there the whole time and increadibly supportive and present. She advocated for my wife's needs and worked well with the hospital staff.
I also found Melissa to be very supportive to me (new father to-be). She gave me some key tips for supporting my wife and helped me feel comfortable in unfamilair terrority.
I would highly recommend Melissa as a doula. She was always proffesional and we enjoyed her company.
- New Father-
I Immediately knew that we where going to hire Melissa. I felt an instant connection with her, and I liked how soft spoken she was. She was incredible with matching my energy.
When it came to D Day, it was clear that we made the right decision. She and my husband worked wonderfully together to make up my perfect labor team. Melissa was so supportive the entire time from getting water to suggesting different positions. She never made me doubt or worry, and only filled me with positive thoughts and energy. She really got me through, because of Melissa I was able to get through a unmedicated birth while on pitocin. There is no way I could of reached that goal without her. I would do it all over again with her on my team, even though it was the most intense thing I have ever been through. She is absolutely amazing, and dear mama you should put her on your team too!
I had no idea what a doula actually did, but everybody told me we had to have one. When I first met Melissa I was a little hesitant about what her services provided. Then, my wife went into labor! From the moment her labor started Melissa was there for us. She was calm cool and collected and quite experienced at the birthing process. She was able to help my wife through her contractions and help me to be prepared for what was happening. She was with us at the hospital, our house, back at the hospital, back at our house, and finally back in the hospital. She was there all through the time when we were admitted into labor and delivery. She helped when she was having contractions and allowed me to have a break every now and then get some rest. She pretty much coached us along the way! For a guy going through this for the first time it was extremely helpful! And, if we are fortunate to have another child I will definitely be calling her for her services again.
I was immediately impressed with Melissa upon meeting her at the Empowering Fearless Birth Expo. Melissa was very professional and presented herself that way. She was also self assertive and engaging.
Once my husband and I decided to use a doula, we set up an initial consultation. As her clients, she immediately made us feel that we were her top priority. In fact she had to miss a family wedding to work with us and while I feel bad that she missed the event, we are so grateful to have had her.
After the initial consultation we had a prenatal visit in which we went over our birth plan and various techniques for coping with contractions. Melissa gave us a rebozo and showed my husband how to use it. She also loaned us books on unmedicated/natural births. Additionally Melissa helped us find a maternity and newborn photographers for a great price.
As we got into the 38th week, we would check in with Melissa periodically and vice versa. My husband informed her when my contractions started late on a Wednesday night. She told him she could meet us at our house, although we didn't take her up on her offer. Instead when we called her at 3am to meet us at the hospital, she arrived within minutes of us.
My labor was a slow one, taking place over 3 days and Melissa hung in there with us throughout. It was like she was part of the family by the end. We feel like we have an amazing bond with her now. Overall our experience with Melissa was positive and priceless. I feel like we both learned so much from her, especially my husband. He was so incredibly helpful throughout the entire birthing experience. Not sure it would have been that way otherwise. I also did a bengkung belly bind with Melissa which was awesome, I highly recommend. Thank you so much Melissa for such a great experience with the birth of our first child. We definitely recommend Melissa and plan to use her again should we have another!
From a dad's perspective, I will say this much out of the gate: hiring Melissa Olsen was the RIGHT decision. We hope to have her again with any future kids we are lucky enough to have. We would reccomend Melissa's doula services to any person and we are totally confident in her ability to deliver the same awesome experince to any other client.
Since this was our first chid, we didn't really know what to expect. This is why we wanted to have a doula in the first place. We knew it would be tough, but as it turns out, it was a lot more tough than either my wife or I anticipated.
Doulas (like realtors) can be a dime a dozen. Lots have experience and can answer questions. Melissa is a complete "standout" from the crowd. We absolutly reccomend her above others.
-Many Doulas may have knowledge and experience, but you cannot fake temperment and personality. Melissa knows how to unwind and defuse a tense, scary, and dramatic situation. This isn't something that can be learned, and Melissa "gets it".
-She knows when to push and when to give. Again--this really can't be "taught", and when my wife was is in labor, Melissa was a wonderful voice of reason. Birth plans are great...until you get there, and then things happen that you didn't plan on. Melissa knew how to navigate us in order that we literally have zero regrets. I do not feel that just 'any' doula could do this.
-At the end of the day, we just like Melissa as a person. She is REAL. Down to earth. Not a hippie (some doula's are). She is super organized, very professional. She was prepared during our initial meetings with specific material--something we noticed that other doula's did not do (many seem to 'wing it').
If you're expecting, do yourself a favor and hire Melissa.
We were introduced to Melissa at our Bradley Method class and had never really considered a doula before we met her. She's so caring, kind, professional and easy to get along with. Our prenatal meetings were comfortable. She came to our home and tried different relaxation techniques, including a rebozo, that we planned on using during birth. She was always available and easy to get ahold. She was very helpful, including but not limited to; diffusing essential oils, suggesting and helping me get into different positions, reminding me to drink water and offering snacks, and being support for my husband and I throughout the birthing process. She knew our birth plan and was an advocate for me during birth. She puts her heart into being a doula and it's obvious from the minute you hire her. We truly believe that she was pivotal in our success in achieving our birth plan of having a natural, nonmedicated birth.
