I had known Raquel for years before she started her Doula training. When she told me she was going to be a Doula, I honestly couldn't think of a more appropriate vocation and calling for my friend. I asked her to assist me in the birth of Lili Dale at the stroke of midnight 2016. This was my second pregnancy following a loss and she stuck by my side, emotionally supporting our family during an anxious pregnancy. Raquel followed me into the the abyss of birth, using firm yet gentle guidance to get me through 16 hours of active labor and helping me find strength to push my little girl out. She taught us counter pressure and coached us through the spinning babies techniques for an optimal birth experience.
I know Raquel is passionate about what she does. Now that she has completed the Advanced Doula training, she is still volunteering at the U of U hospital, caring for current clients, and providing Blessing Ways, which involve beautiful belly mandalas. She has assisted strangers, soon to be friends, through one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences a woman will undertake. Raquel is very learned in this field and her methods support the mind/body/soul of the individuals involved with the birth, creating a luscious space for the new human to arrive into.
I plan to hire her again for my next pregnancy. If you are searching for or simply contemplating hiring a Doula for your delivery, contact Raquel today!
Raquel Alfaro assisted my daughter with the birth of her baby in August 2016. I lived with my daughter for two months and was able to witness first-hand the genuine concern and professionalism Raquel demonstrated. She visited my daughter’s home several times before the birth to teach my daughter, my daughter’s husband and I effective physical techniques to use during labor designed to ease discomfort. She performed powerful mindful exercises with my daughter to prepare her mentally for the upcoming marathon of delivering a baby. Her comments demonstrated a deep respect for the wellbeing of both body and spirit of all living things which inspired trust. She made herself available for the unpredictable time when we needed her presence, and she arrived ready for action on the day labor became regular. Her soothing presence and calm voice led us all gently through the hours of contractions, and her experience with other births led her to make suggestions which helped us know what to do as labor patterns changed. As a healthcare professional myself, I am aware of the precarious balance of important factors during labor and delivery affecting both mother and child. These factors change as the birth process progresses and decisions made on the spot can directly impact life or death. Raquel made wise decisions during our birth experience. She involved the entire birthing team as she introduced visual imagery techniques that gave renewed hope and energy when my daughter was exhausted and discouraged. She worked well with the certified nurse midwife also assisting, and she asked questions to further expand her pool of knowledge. After many hours of unmedicated and completely natural labor, my granddaughter arrived alert with eyes open and lusty cry. I feel certain that our birth experience was successful in large part due to the insightful, talented guidance provided by Raquel. I personally recommend her as a positive part of any birthing team.
Raquel is a very knowledgeable and professional doula. She was a great support during and after the birth of my son. During labor, I enjoyed her gentle, calm approach. In the post-partum phase, I felt very supported by her weel-researched advice. In summary, my husband and I would recommend Raquel without hesitation as birth and post-partum doula.
We hired Raquel on a hunch about 2 weeks before the due date. Incidentally, three days later I was told I would need an induction asap. During those confused hours of finding out why and what was going on, Raquel coached us on the phone, explaining our options, giving advice on how to possibly achieve a spontaneous onset of labor, and generally being there and helpful. Once my labor really started, Raquel was at the hospital in no time. Even though my husband was calm during the birth, she was instrumental in helping and supporting him during my active labor, giving him moments of rest and working with him to help me. She also did a great job at getting me through this period with gentle support, pain relief techniques and encouragement. During labor, again, Raquel always explained all the technicalities and options that nurses and midwives offered, opening up spaces for me to take informed decisions.
Despite having Raquel join our birth plan really late (she only managed to meet us once before), she was readily available for all questions and concerns prior to the birth, came to the hospital very fast and came by for 2 or 3 post-partum visits. She was a fantastic support during and after the birth- and in the early days when I was fighting with breastfeeding and a baby that wasn't eating as well as everyone wanted him to.
I had a very good birthing experience and I feel that Raquel played an essential role in this. Going through this without her would have been possible, but having her there made all the difference.
I started working with Raquel when I was approximately 5 months pregnant. I wanted someone who was familiar with natural childbirth by study, but also by experience. In Raquel, I found an ally who was invested in the day to day of my pregnancy, as well as the impending birth day. Raquel taught me and my partner techniques for managing low back aches during pregnancy as well as pressure points and stretches to use while in labor. I also found our meditations to be very helpful. When, in my 40th week, my labor started then stalled, Raquel came and took us for a walk where we used some holds and tricks to activate more consistent rushes and she later texted some ideas for me to try at home. Sure enough, I was in active labor within the next day. When, on birth day, I was being pressured by an on-call doctor at the hospital, she was well versed in my birth plan and advocated for me 100%. Raquel has a unique view of childbirth that absolutely supports comfort and confidence.
Whether in person, by phone, or via text, our sessions always left me feeling more at ease and confident than I would have imagined possible. Raquel asks questions before she offers advice and she has the rare gift of self awareness, making her suggestions intuitive and open-ended. I would highly recommend Raquel to anyone seeking the services of a poised, helpful and individualized doula.
