Summer was so good to our family. She is great with older siblings for the prenatal visits and never rushed us. She is super responsive to questions and just any general concerns. She was there for us in every part of labor and delivery. she was such an asset to us and helped us make it just the right experience. I highly recommend having her on your team.
I started searching for doulas here on DoulaMatch early on in my pregnancy (around 10 weeks), and of the five that I contacted, Summer was the first one who responded back, the first one I met with, and the one I ultimately hired. She is warm, knowledgable, and passionate about her work, and she has a sense of calm and wisdom that is beyond her years. My four meetings with her, from our first introduction to my postpartum followup, were a perfect mix of education and personal connection, and she was excellent about staying in touch in between as well. Since she also works in a nursery, Summer was also very good at including my 3-year-old daughter in our visits. I was devastated that she couldn't attend my baby's birth due to a pesky 24-hour virus that struck her at the exact time that I went into active labor, but she was with me and my husband via text messages the whole time, and was able to send her backup doula, Jessica Turner, who also turned out to be wonderful.
No matter what I was experiencing throughout my pregnancy, from nausea to heartburn to insomnia, Summer always had good tips for me, and more importantly, was there to encourage me and assure me that everything was normal and was going to be okay. She sent me tons of great reading material and exercises that helped me prepare for my natural birth, she helped me and my husband practice different labor positions and pain coping techniques that ended up being very effective, and she even attended a birth affirmations class with me. I'd had a less than ideal experience with my first daughter's birth, and I was overjoyed to experience a "redemption" this time around — a natural vaginal breech birth with no complications. I definitely owe it in part to Summer, even though she wasn't there to see my daughter's little bum make its debut.
Summer is such a gentle and warm person! Her passion for natural birth is contagious, and I always felt revived and excited for my birth after our meetings. She met with us three times before the delivery, and each time she brought a wealth of knowledge, non-judgmental answers to our questions, as well as essential oils and birth balls to try out! She helped me create a birth plan, lent me books, and passed along evidence-based research when I needed guidance. Summer also paid attention to my husband’s questions and concerns, which he appreciated.
During my long labor, Summer provided a calm presence for me, reminding me and my husband of ways to cope with and augment labor. When we got to the hospital, Summer seemed to know exactly what I needed, when I needed space, and when I needed her to step in; her intuition while I was laboring was really invaluable. She applied counter pressure during contractions, helped me in and out of the shower, suggested different positions to labor in, and was by my side during pushing. They say to be flexible with your birth plan, and ours went out the window! Summer remained calm and professional, even while I was an emotional wreck as the reality of a c-section set in. Her reassuring words after the delivery still bring tears to my eyes. She was such a wonderful addition to my birth team. I felt supported, respected, and loved. I would most definitely recommend her!
Through out my pregnancy I had considered doula services for my labor and delivery. Around 35 weeks is when I decided for sure that I wanted a doula to help me cope with my feelings of fear and anxiety so I could have the birth experience I had envisioned. The first time I met Summer, I just knew she would be perfect for my family and me. She was so knowledgeable through out our meeting and even sent me information about the role of doulas for my partner who was worried that his part in our birth would be taken away. Once we hired Summer, she met with me twice and always encouraged me to contact her with any questions I would think of. She discussed with me how I envisioned my birth, helped with my birth plan and choosing the right options for us. She sent me so much valuable information on topics that I was curious about. When the time came for my daughter to be born, she was right there with us, using encouraging words letting me know I was doing great. She brought everything we had discussed to use during my labor and she documented my daughter's entrance into the world with photographs just as I had asked! Even after the birth of my child, she kept in contact with me in the weeks following to ensure I was adjusting well. She visited us a few days after we made it home and brought truly heartfelt gifts. Summer is a wonderful person and doula! I'd choose her a million times over!!!! We really loved her and are thankful for her role in our child's birth!
