My husband and I are so pleased with our decision to hire Amanda as our Doula. My labor experience would have been drastically different had she not been there with me. Amanda offered support during labor in numerous ways. She offered lots of encouragement, massaged me, wrapped my belly, used heat when I wanted it, used counter-pressure, a peanut and a birth ball when I needed it, offered suggestions for more comfortable positioning, read my birthing affirmations aloud to me and timed my contractions. I gave birth to my daughter at Special Beginnings Birth Center. I labored at home for several hours for as long as I could before arriving at the Birth Center. Amanda came first to labor with me at home and arrived quickly when my husband and I told her we were ready. While at the birth center, she worked extremely well with the midwives and other staff and was helpful when I had to make decisions about my care by asking me what I wanted, asking the midwives about pros and cons about the things they were proposing and requesting I have a few minutes to think and make a decision. She was always respectful and tender. When my daughter arrived, Amanda took pictures of her first few moments and then  helped me breastfeed her as soon as possible. She even fed me so I could focus on feeding my baby (which she did throughout labor anyway). During my pregnancy, Amanda was always available to answer questions and suggest resources. She helped me find a birthing class, met with us in our home to discuss the birthng process, comfort measures (and more) and helped me organize my birth plan. She also visited me postpartum. I told her hiring her was the best decision we made since deciding to have a baby and I meant it! Labor is hard and I believe how you experience it and how supported you feel is so important. I know my experience of my baby's birth was made more memorable because of Amanda's support and would do it over again the same way.

When I got pregnant I didn't really know what a doula was but knew that I wanted the most natural birthing experience possible. I went under the care of midwives at a birthing center and was referred to Amanda by a mutual friend. We met with Amanda pretty late in the pregnancy but she was still on board to answer any questions my husband or I may have had.

Our baby ended up being super late (12 days) and Amanda helped us through decisions as far as induction or not. Ultimately, Amanda got us through a very long labor- starting at the birthing center and getting transferred to the hospital.  She was by my side every step of the way. Met us at the birthing center, came to our house so I could labor there, back to the birthing center and then to the hospital. I think Amanda was awake for 36 hours during my labor. She is professional and also comforting but is stern when necessary. She clearly loves being a doula and to me and my husband, she is an angel on Earth.  She was the perfect intermediate between my husband and I for the birth of our first baby. I would definitely use her for future children as well.

Being pregnant for first time I knew I wanted a little extra help during labor. My husband and I decided that it would be perfect touch to our birthing plan so hired Amanda Shepherd as our doula and we couldn't have made a better choice. I was very comfortable from the first meeting that we had and I knew I was in good hands with her. Throughout my pregnancy she kept in touch to see how everything was progressing and to see if I needed anything. The day I went to be induced Amanda was right there from the beginning. She came prepared with relaxing music and encouraged as much rest as possible during my early stages of labor. During labor, Amanda had many different techniques to help me get through each and every contraction. She was able to get me in various positions to help alleviate the discomfort, and help me with my breathing techniques. I trusted her.  She walked the halls with us and give me relaxing massages to help my body relax. After 20 some hours of hard back labor and not progressing very far I made the very hard decision to get an epidural. I was very upset with myself but Amanda reassured me that I was doing what I needed to do for me and my baby and that all I should  think about is the end result of him coming out safely. Then my baby was in an awkward position that wasn't suitable for coming out naturally and my Midwife said that within the next couple hours if his position did not change we would have to go for a C-section. Amanda reassured me that she was going to do everything possible to help my baby get in position, which she did and I was able to deliver naturally. Amanda is absolutely fabulous and I would highly recommend her to anyone. I will definitely be using her again during my next pregnancy. Amanda is very professional, kind and extremely knowledgable in what she does. She has definitely found her calling, and I could not have done it without her. Thank you so much Amanda for making my birthing experience so special.

My experience with Amanda Shepherd was one of great joy... She was my daughter Chelsea Dickinson's  Doula.. My daughter had a long and hard labor 24 plus hours of which she stood the entire time because she couldnt sit or lay down from the severe pain she was having in her back and butt... Amanda always kept Chelsea calmn and stood with her and held my daughter like she was her mother... I would describe there labor experience as a very well rehearsed dance..Amanda held my daughter and they rocked back and forth  thru the entire contraction which helped chelsea get thru the pain... at the end when my daughter was so exhausted from laboring standing the entire time Amanda was very compassionate and caring when letting chelsea know that she did a wonderful job and that it wasnt her fault that she couldnt make it to the end without having an epideral..  That the end result was for her and the baby to be healthy.. I  know that my daughter will use her again when she  has her next baby if she is still offering her service.   A++++ For Amanda Shepherd

My amazing experience with Amanda Shepherd, started well before labor.I read the appropriate baby and parenting books, but the most invaluable information and support came from Amanda. We met several times before labor to discuss expectations and preferences for my delivery. She provided sage advice when I had questions or concerns about any part of the process. It was comforting to be able to call Amanda after a doctor’s visit to better understand my progress. Amanda arrived at my home around 3am when my contractions were intensifying- with each one she helped me feel a sense of calm and control. She suggested different positions and would often support my back or rub a pressure point as I grew more uncomfortable. When we got to the hospital it was actually Amanda that went into triage with me (I could only take one person) and offered guidance and a hand to hold. Through every step she knew exactly what to say or do to help me feel a little better. There were times I didn’t want to change to position because my body was exhausted, but once I did, at her suggestion, I would feel much better. She reminded me that many decisions about my body or the baby were mine. Hospitals have a very specific modus operandi, but this methodology doesn’t have to apply to every mother and baby. I was extremely grateful to have Amanda at my side for each of the decisions that are second nature to hospital staff, but are brand new to first time mothers. Amanda is a wonderful Doula. She was a great listener and very knowledgeable. She is especially adept at motivating, encouraging and comforting in a way that is unique to the individual. After labor and delivery I had a hard time breastfeeding, which left me distraught. Amanda again offered recommendations, found lactation resources for me and consoled me in a time of distress. I’m so lucky to have had a doula by my side for the birth of my baby and I’m honored that it was Amanda.

Amanda was my doula for both of my pregnancies.  I LOVE her!  She's patient, calm, caring, reassuring and gives the best foot massages!  She stayed with me from the moment I got to the hospital until I gave birth.  She's so encouraging during the hardest parts of labor.  And reminded me how strong and capable I was to get through the contractions.  I highly recommend Amanda as your doula...I wouldn't go through another labor and delivery without her!

Amanda Shepherd assisted my husband and I in the birth of our third child. I had previously delivered vaginally twice and I can say that without a doubt this was by far my hardest labor. I had my third baby naturally and if it had not been for Amanda's support I would not have had the success in my labor or my baby coming out. When I finally dilated and the baby was coming out quickly my nurse and midwife were not available. They were birthing other babies and not readily available. I was scared. I was very scared and felt very insecure. Amanda reassured me she said "do not worry I am here for you and your baby we will get through this nothing bad is going to happen I'm right here". In that moment I immediately felt ok and safe. My husband has admitted he never was able to support me the way Amanda was able to. I believe in my heart she saved me and my baby from going into distress that day. We made it together in the birthing room that day and for that I will be forever thankful.

A heartfelt thankyou?

Amanda was our doula for our second child. Our 1st child was an un-assisted birth at home and it went well, but it was a lot of pressure on my husband. I was really worried about having someone else present at the birth. My husband was supportive but skeptical about having a Doula. Ironically now my husband tells everyone how great it was having Amanda at the birth and that everyone should have a Doula. Having Amanda there helped me stay focused and she would remind me about breathing and positioning. She is incredibly knowledgeable and the most happy and supportive person I think I have ever met. There are no more babies in our future, but if there were, I would absolutely use Amanda again.
