From the first meeting I knew Christa was the right doula for our family. She accompanied us on a difficult journey, and I’ll always be grateful for her support. As my daughter turns one next week, I’m reminded of how thoughtful, caring, and knowledgeable Christa was during my pregnancy and my daughter's birth. Thank you for everything Christa!
From my first interaction with Christa, I felt heard and supported. As a single queer parent, it was very important to me to have someone who understood the special needs of single queer parents during pregnancy and birth; Christa was that person.
During the labor itself, Christa helped me to negotiate the challenges of what ended up being an extremely long labor (nearly 24 hours), including helping me make mindful and meaningful decisions about interventions when my labor was stalled. Christa was supportive throughout the long labor process, while also giving me space to labor in the way that felt best to me.
If you are looking for a calming, supportive, and affirming presence for your birth, I highly recommend Christa.
Christa was wonderful to work with. She is kind, funny, caring and a great listener - all of which we felt were very important when picking a doula. She got right to work when we hired her, and the two pre-labor sessions were so helpful in preparing for the main event. She has lots of tips and techniques to use, and she worked with us to figure out which ones we felt would work for us. I found practicing them to be key. Leading up to labor, she was great and responsive in answering my questions.
Even as a second time mom, I felt that having Christa there on our labor team to be part of the experience gave me the confidence I needed to have the labor and delivery I had hoped for.
My wife and I worked with Christa for the birth of our second child in the summer of 2017. She was an invaluable member of our birth team.
During a long labor process, Christa supported my wife through contractions, through breathing exercises, utilizing different positions and scents. She also made sure that my sister-in-law and I were getting support, whether it was getting us something to drink or eat, or suggesting different ways we could help my wife.
When it became more and more clear that a c-section would be required, Christa remained a source of calm and strength during an emotional and stressful moment, helping to communicate among our family, as well as the medical team. She was critical in helpng us focus and remain calm and grounded as we made important decisions. After the birth, several members of the medical staff commented on Christa's professionalism and her effectiveness.
From our perspective, Christa played a key role in welcoming our daughter safely into this world and we highly recommend her to anyone looking for birth doula support.
My wife and I cannot thank Christa enough for her help, guidance, and support during the birth of our beautiful daughter, and first child. Her experience, instinct, and confidence in my wife all contributed to the wonderful outcome of a healthy baby girl and minimal impact on mom.
We are so grateful for the consultation and resources that Christa provided to us to prepare. And on the "big day", she was professional, composed, and respectful of all involved - parents, nurses, and doctors.
When my husband and I first met Christa, we knew that she would be a great match for us to help with the birth of our first child. Christa is calm, kind, patient, knowledgable, and flexible. Leading up to delivery, she offered wonderful resources and met with us several times to get to know us and our birth preferences. When the delivery day came, she was communicative and helped us prepare and decide when to head to the hospital. When the time came for us to call her in, she came promptly and brought new energy upon arrival. When some of the delivery didn't go as planned, Christa was an excellent advocate and helped us to make decisions and communicate with the doctors and nurses. We are so thankful that she was there, and the birth went as smoothly as it could have because she was present. In addition, Christa helped me to stick with my desired birth plan, even when things got hard. Her techniques of calming, movement, breathing, and positioning helped us get through the most intense parts of labor. Her positive outlook, kind demeanor, and sincere personality gave me strength and confidence. In addition, Christa helped my husband help me, and did a great job of keeping him involved and informed throughout the birth. Aside from the fact that I like Christa very much as a person, I couldn't recommend her more as a Doula. Her experience, energy, and calming nature all contribute to make what can be a very stressful experience more smooth and give both the mother and partner more confidence and peace of mind in the birth process. Should we have another child, we would certainly work with Christa again.
This was my first pregnancy, and, from the beginning, I knew I wanted a doula. A friend suggested I try the Philly Doula Co-Op, and I am so happy I was matched up with Christa. The two prenatal home visits gave my husband and me chance to talk about how we envisioned labor and the three of us got to know each other during these visits. As it turned out, I had to be induced at 41 weeks, and Christa was always available by text or phone call to talk things over. As for the delivery itself, I can't imagine what it would have been like to go through labor without Christa by my side. She was a calming presence; she took such good care of me. She held my hand, got me water, helped me breathe. She freed up my husband be there for me in a way he couldn't have if she had not been there, too. During the postpartum home visit, we talked about how breastfeeding has been a struggle, and Christa supported my decisions and reassured me every step of the way. I've also been dealing with postpartum anxiety, and Christa immediately responded when I reached out to her for advice on how to deal with that. I highly recommend Christa for anyone looking for a doula to help them through this life-changing experience. She is everything you'd want in a labor support specialist!
Christa was a great help from start to finish. Weeks before birth, she came over twice to speak with us about stretches, breathing techniques, and other exercises. On the day of our child's birth, Christa was an indisposable resource for us, helping us both get throughout. Christa helped with breathing, positioning, and in creating a relaxed atmosphere for our child to enter the world. For my wife, Christa acted as something of a personal assistant, providing water, ice, a towel, and a massage when she needed it.
Christa is an amazing doula. My favorite thing about her service was that she was involved in every aspect of my pregnancy as well. She wanted to know how I was feeling, how my appointments went, and even attended a session of my birth class. At the birth Christa was present and dvaliable to help me as I needed. She was very encouraging and listened to me. Though there were many unexpected twists in my labor, Christa helped me feel stable. Im so glad she was on my team!
My husband and I decided to hire a doula because, as first time parents, we knew we wanted the support of someone with lots of labor and birth experience and heard such great things about doulas from friends. We met Christa and knew that we clicked with her and wouldn't hesitate to have her with us during this life event. Christa has a warm personality and was able to connect easily with us.
I gave birth in a hospital but was hoping for a natural approach to hospital birth with the most important factor being that I not be pushed into medical interventions that either had an obvious alternative and/or I was resistant to. Christa supported my "plan" from the very beginning, being sure to educate my husband and I on pain relief techniques, lots of literature to educate ourselves, and tips for laboring at home. She met with us at our home twice, which really helped us get to know each other and prepare for labor and birth.
As my due date came and went, Christa supported me through the emotions of those last few weeks by chatting with me over the phone and reassuring me. Those last few weeks were tough, and Christa was always available to talk through whatever I was feeling, and also to help me see the bright side always.
Once labor started, Christa was in the hospital with us as soon as we asked her to be and stayed the whole time-- almost 24 hours! She helped make the hospital room more cozy with lots of tools and supported us through each decision as we made it, always offering lots of options as we discussed pain relief, laboring positions, etc.
Both my husband and I know that our experience wouldn't have been the same without her. We both benefitted greatly from Christa's support and will always seek a doula's support in the future.
As the father here I was agnostic on the thought of hiring a doula, if not skeptical. After going through the process (1st time) I can't imagine how we could have done it without Christa's help and guidance. Experience in any field is important but when going through something so life changing, physically demanding, and emotionally taxing it can't be understated how valuable she was. Her advice and open discussions at the prenatal visits helped tremendously to set the stage for what was to come and build a level of trust that was needed and comforting as the day came. Through the the pre-labor and then labor Christa was able to answer any question/concern we threw her way and functioned as a security blanket of the sort knowing we weren't going in this alone.
The time in the hospital though was where we were the most thankful to have her as part of the process. She provided the comfort we needed and reassurance throughout that we'd make it out in one piece with a happy baby. Never did we feel alone or unsure of the next steps and she was the reason why, advising us on our options and explaining on our terms what was happening. The nurse and hospital staff can only provide so much and that's where a doula like Christa is able to fill the void expertly. As the partner in this birth her ability to step in when I needed a breather and help me help my wife the way she needed was what I was most thankful for, and am reluctant to think about doing that again on my own.
If someone is having hesitation hiring a doula (especially Christa), I'd offer a 100% enthusiastic DO IT. The rewards and benefits are something that we didn't grasp until afterwards but may have been the best birth-related decision we made.
Hiring Christa was the best decision and money my husband and I ever spent. She helped educate us and relax us at our prenatal sessions, as this is our first baby and we were nervous. When it came time for labor and delivery, she was available and supportive. Christa came to the hospital twice with us, the first time I was sent home. She offered comfort to my husband and I during labor and helped me advocate for labor positions and the choice of whether or not I wanted medications. My delivery was super smooth and I attribute that to Christa and the atmoshere she provided me through massage, essential oils, her visualizations, calming voice, etc. I believe the reason why my delivery went so smooth and very quickly (20 mins) after 3 days of labor was because of Christa's presence. I promise you, having a doula is the right choice. You will be comforted and more relaxed. Christa is absolutely awesome!
Christa really helped to make our birth experience a joyous one! I had my first child just over a month ago and was feeling very anxious about what to expect during delivery. I knew I did not want to use medication and wanted to avoid a c section unless it was absolutely medically necessary. Christa met with us twice before the birth to go over what to expect, how to develop our birth plan, and how to really think through what our options were. She did a great job of helping us process that without judgment about what any of our choices were. She was very affirming and supportive through the whole planning process. She also provided amazing educational resources I never would have found otherwise. Once the big day came, Christa was a lifesaver! As soon as she got to the hospital she began helping with pain management and that was a real turning point in my labor process. With her guidance I immediately became better at managing the pain and made it through with no medication. Unfortunately, a c section did become medically necessary and there was really no other safe choice. I was very disappointed but Christa helped me emotionally through that time as well and I was able to come to terms with it and still enjoy my birth experience. I should also mention that Christa struck the right balance of always being present and helpful but not in an overbearing way so that my husband and I felt comfortable the entire time. She was amazing and I would recommend her to anyone!
I am so grateful to have had Christa as my doula. She was very supportive of every one of my decisions (even last-minute changes) and made sure I was well-informed. Christa was a much needed part of my support system; aside from our reglar meetings, she took me to birth classes, let me borrow her own pregnancy books and supplies, and has been there for me with resources and advice since my son was born. When I was in labor, I became immediately relieved when Christa arrived becase she exudes calm energy, and knows exactly what to do to help a laboring mother through every birth wave. I highly recommend Christa as a doula becase she is professional, reliable, and will make sure that you have the best birth experience possible.
My first son’s birth was long and difficult, and I was initially apprehensive about repeating the birth process when I became pregnant with my second son. Christa absolutely put me at ease and helped me practice the hypnobirthing technique that I wanted to use. She negotiated my busy schedule and met with me many times so that I felt prepared when the day came. Her patience, calm demeanor, and expertise helped my second son’s birth to be a radically and wonderfully empowering experience for me—one I will never forget. I would highly recommend Christa as a fantastic doula for any mom-to-be.
Christa Aikins was such a pleasure to work with. I thought it would have been awkward giving birth with someone around me that I didn't know, but from the first meeting Christa made me and my husband feel very comfortable. Whether you want a natural birth or a little assistant, there will be no judgement from her. I chose to go natural and even with some labor complications she worked hard to relax me and keep me focused. I would definitely recommend her to be your doula!
