Jessiqua Wittman

I'm not the type of person that most people would expect to hire a doula. For one thing, I'm a doula myself, so obviously I know all that stuff, right? I also had already successfully birthed three children at home, med-free, with no complications.
But, because I "knew all that stuff", and because I'd been through birth before, and because I had this nagging, persistent feeling that my upcoming labor would be "different", I made the jump and hired Hilary.
The started out casual, but then refused to progress like my labors usually do. Hilary was a huge aid in helping me feel grounded and remembering my strength and birthing skills. Even when the whole night had progressed, and my pushing had complicated and worn on to last nearly two hours, she seemed just as resilient and confident and chipper as she had during the first couple hours of labor. The crux point came at the end of my pushing. Through the haze, I realized that my baby was stuck, and that I HAD to move. I started pushing all the rest of my family and helpers out of my way and roaring. My sister in law said she'd "never seen anyone move as fast as that lady! (Hilary)" She helped me change my position, and she adjusted bedding and equipment to keep me comfortable, all the while cheerily encouraging me that this was good and keeping the atmosphere from going entirely haywire.
Five minutes later, my baby was born. It was such a relief! I slumped there with my head literally in her lap and thanked God in every way for every thing I could think of. She agreed with me in prayer and petted my head in the nicest way until I was able to relax and focus on my baby.
Truly, Hilary was a "woman's helper" for me. She fulfilled her role more perfectly than I could have imagined. I'm so thankful I hired her and I don't doubt that she was a huge part in making my hardest labor bearable, even a positive experience!
