I worked with Emily professionally before she became a doula, and when I heard she had chosen that for a career I immediately knew it was a perfect fit for her (and that I would want her to be MY doula someday!). Emily has all of the characteristics of a great birth partner: she's calm, warm, compassionate, intelligent, and insightful. She met with my husband and I a few times during my pregnancy to help us get prepared which was really nice. One moment that stands out is when we tried different coping techniques and she talked me through a visual meditation - a walk in the forest - and her soothing voice was wonderful as I held painfully cold ice in my hand to practice for contractions. On the big day, Emily came to our house several hours after I started laboring, once the contractions were getting very intense. I can't imagine laboring alone with just my husband and no one else with experience, so it was really nice to have her there for her support, helping us decide when to leave for the birth center. She was also great about keeping me hydrated when it was the last thing I wanted to do. We all got in the car and my contractions were coming very close together at this point, and she was very patient and kind with me while I was probably not. Happily, when we got there and the midwife checked me, I was 7-8 cm and was pushing within an hour, and I credit Emily with helping us stay at home for as long as we did. I think if it were just me and my husband I would have gone in sooner even though I'd prefer to labor at home. I surprised myself by not wanting my husband to touch me at all, maybe I just wanted a woman's touch, so Emily was helpful in keeping a cool cloth on my head and encouraging me while I pushed for almost two hours. After our sweet baby girl arrived I needed some stitches which were extremely painful, so I was thankful to squeeze Emily's hand while my husband held the baby. I'm so thankful we had her support during that intense day!
Emily was an indispensable member of my birth team; I can't imagine my pregnancy and labor without her!
During my pregnancy, her knowledge and advice helped me prepare mentally for what my natural labor would be like. She provided valuable resources like books and even hand drawn illustrations to explain different aspects of labor. We practiced comfort measures such as rebozo scarf techniques. Because of her counsel and support, I went into labor with a clear head, feeling confident and strong.
During labor, her calming presence helped set a relaxing atmosphere in the room. She seemed to find a perfect balance between giving me space and jumping in to help when she sensed I needed something- even if I hadn't yet asked for it. Emily worked seamlessly alongside my midwife and midwife's assistant and was a great comfort to my husband and my mother.
After the little babe was born, Emily stayed with us at the birth center for as long as we needed her. She made sure the baby and I were comfortable and staying healthy (breastfeeding, eating, drinking fluids etc.). She even helped with things I didn't know I would need, like a shoulder to lean on while I went to the toilet. She visited us later that week with food and to make sure everything was going smoothly.
I highly recommend Emily's doula services to women who want a calm and confident helper and advocate during their labor.
My family thanks you, Emily!
