As a military spouse and first time mom, hiring a doula was an important part of my preparation for labor and childbirth. Living far away from family and having a husband whose job requires frequent travel, I wanted to make sure that I had someone who would be at the hospital with me no matter what. Elizabeth was great over the phone and the two times I met with her in person and I trusted that she would be a valuable asset during labor. I ended up having a scheduled induction. I spoke with Elizabeth the day before and she told me she wouldn’t come to the hospital for the first couple hours because it takes awhile for active labor to start. A little weird, but fine. I was induced at 7:45am. Elizabeth never proactively reached out to me. I had to remember between contractions to update her and finally asked her to come at 2pm when she had not yet shown up on her own. I had assumed she was going to come hours before then since that’s what she had told me the day before. She was obviously delaying responding to me throughout the day and when she finally did, she first questioned me on the consistency of my contractions and then said she wouldn’t be there for another 2 hours! She finally showed up even longer than that at 4:45pm, 9 hours after I had started labor. By that point I had already gotten an epidural & was stuck in bed so there was nothing left for her to do. I have never been so let down or had my trust violated to such an extent, especially in such a particularly stressful and vulnerable time as experiencing childbirth for the first time. I ended up asking her to leave. It’s so unfortunate that her unprofessional and unacceptable behavior cast a shadow over an otherwise perfect day of welcoming my son into the world. I would strongly caution anyone considering using her services.
