Doula Training

  • DONA International, February 2016
Type of Practice: Doula agency owner

Clients per Month: 2 to 4 births and 2 postpartum families

Postpartum limits/restrictions: My postpartum practice is limited to working with Mom, Baby and family. Focus on Mother Roasting (warming the mother with food and body work) and assisting with baby. Will help families with establishing new roles and finding their ways as new family members. Love cooking healthful, nutritious and warming foods for mama. Not hired for housecleaning.
Attends hospital births? All Hospitals
I believe that a hospital birth can be both challenging and rewarding. Hiring a doula that you trust, can really assist with advocacy (for your ideal birth), with emotional support for mamas, especially when deviating from birth plan, and for papas to know and understand the events as they roll out, whether mama is having a natural birth or there are interventions (planned or unplanned)
Attends birth center births? All Birth Centers
Birth Center birth is an amazing way to achieve a natural birth with the benefits of easy transfer should one be needed (emergent or non emergent). Hiring a doula for a birth center birth allows the parents to completely relax and let go for their birthing experience. To focus on the moment and to trust the staff and birth team will allow for their baby to arrive in her own time and without intervention.
Attends home births? Some Home Births
I will not attend unassisted birth. (one where there is not a certified midwife)

Amy Meilen is an absolutely amazing doula. I can’t quite put into words how grateful I am for her. I can’t imagine our birth without her. She provided invaluable support before, during, and after our birth. During my 24 hours of labor Amy was constantly there supporting my husband and me. When the midwife started discussing a hospital transfer (we were at a birth center) because of stalled labor, Amy knew exactly what to do to get my labor progressing and helped us avoid a Pitocin intervention. We were later transferred to the hospital because of other complications, and Amy was right by our side helping us navigate the situation and ensuring that our wishes were followed. If Amy had not been there I don’t think we would have had the natural birth that we desired. I am so very thankful that we had Amy supporting our birth, and I highly recommend her services.

Amy was amazing. Firstly, I can't imagine going through the birthing experience without a doula. Even after taking birthing classes, I didn't have a large amount of confidence. The nurses were wonderful but their focus is different than a doula's. Secondly, choosing Amy as our doula was absolutely the best decision we made during our pregnancy. Her knowledge, caring, and communication skills helped us be completely at ease before birth and during labor. She guided us through the hours of labor which helped me work through the pain, helped my partner stay at ease and feel like he could make it through confidently, and she was a huge part of creating the calm & loving atmosphere we wanted for our son's birth. Thank you so much Amy!!!

My wife and I had reservations in hiring a doula, questioning necessity and cost. We now agree that having Amy on our birth team was the best choice we could have made and worth every penny. From mentally and physically helping me prepare and guiding us both through a 25+ hour labor, to providing amazing postpartum support, we now cannot imagine how we would have done that alone. Amy provides knowledge without judgement, wit and wisdom, and a physical therapy approach.  Since birth we have used other folks in her collective including the lactation consultant. We are beyond thankful and appreciative for her service and collective.

Amy was our doula for our second birth, a VBAC. I knew the moment we met her that she was the support person my husband and I needed to have the birth we wanted. We only had one prenatal visit because I went into labor a few days later at 37w4d. We encountered a lot of negativity from a handful of medical providers once we made it to the hospital, but Amy was able to keep us focused and make MANY suggestions that helped me stay on track with our birth plan. It was a very hard labor, and I doubted myself more than once - but Amy never left my side. We also had our toddler with us for a good portion of my labor, and she jumped right in and helped us out with him when necessary. She encouraged, supported and motivated me to push through when I thought I didn't have anything left to give. Her knowledge of the human body and birthing process allowed me to labor and birth our son via an amazing VBAC, even with the eventual use of an epidural. We couldn't have done it without her!

I hired Amy for pospartum doula care and it was one of the best decisions I have made! This is my 6th birth and I wished I had hired her for all of my previous births and postpartum care. Her service was beyond anything I expected and I can tell she truly cares about women's well being. I couldn't get enough of Amy!

She is a physical therapist and she knows what she is doing. Her massages was perfect for after birth and I usually have aches that stay around for a few weeks that comes after my pevious birth. After the first masssage my aches were gone.

I loved the food she cooked that was healing and gentle on my body. She will come to your house and cook everything while you sit and rest and cuddle with your baby!

She offers all kinds of services and I think this is one of the best companies out there. My only regret is not finding her company earlier, being able to take her classes and taking adavange of her services. Fortunately, I found her comapny about a month before this birth. The postpartum plan is very well thought out and goes out of the way to make sure there is wholeness and a healthy recovery for women.

After interviewing a few doulas, it was about 5 minutes into our first meeting that I knew Amy would be perfect for us. I wanted someone that would be strong and advocate for us while being the calm & familiar in uncharted territory. The knowledge she brought to each of our interactions was always refreshing. Her support as my due date came and went and her dedication to us and our wishes through a day and a half of early labor at home and a two and a half day induction are things we will cherish forever. Not only did Amy's coaching help me feel prepared as the end of pregnancy neared but her calm demeanor & strong will was just what I needed through labor, as well as her knowledge and experience during my post-partum period was phenomenal. When I discovered I was expecting again, calling Amy was one of the first things I did because I was looking for an OB referral. Baby #2 was another wild ride that was a late pregnancy shift to a home birth that turned into a hospital transfer because of being overdue and Amy was once again such an important part of surrounding us in love through an uncertain labor and helping us navigate through the medical system during our baby's birth. I will always treasure Amy's part in our transition from a couple to a family and look forward to having her as part of our team as our family grows.

Amy assisted in our birth with our sweet baby boy on 9/22/15. Her strength and encouragement was the cornerstone to our birth experience. Her physical assist through massage, positioning, and counter pressure was monumental for me during my hard and fast labor. She was 100% present during the entire birth and offered incredible assists and encouragment to both myself and my husband.

I sound Amy's biggest strength to be her ability to know exactly how to proivide physical comfort in the most uncomfortable situations.  I assume this is due to her physical therapy background which I found to be an incredible asset for a doula! I genuinely wonder if I would have been able to succeed at a drug free birth if she was not by my side!

Amy did so many little things that meant so much to us: gave me prenatal massages, recorded a birth story, made us a photo album, brought me a smoothie when I was in labor, etc etc!! The list goes on! My family and I have such a special place for her in our hearts. She is a gift and I will DEFINITELY use her again when we have baby number two.

I cannot recommend her services highly enough. She is a fantastic doula and you will not regret hiring her.

We were so fortunate to have had Amy as our doula! She served as a huge resource to us while we went through our first pregnancy, offering guidance on everything from how to educate ourselves on our medical options to pain management techniques.  Amy's confidence was contagious, which was truly invaluable.  Since she is a mama of four herself, I felt like she understood everything that I/we were going through, and that was so helpful.

When I went into labor, my husband and I were both SO grateful to have her there! I am doubtful that I would have been able to manage the pain on my own, and I think my husband would have been a complete wreck! Amy was patient, encouraging and comforting throughout labor - which turned out to be exactly what I needed.

I was very fortunate because I was able to have the natural birth that I had dreamed of, and I know that this is not possible for everyone.  I think that we owe so much of that to Amy because she believed in this dream and helped us realize it by being a constant source of reassurance and comfort.  I was so inspired by working with Amy, and I would recommend her to anyone seeking a pregnancy and birthing experience that is the best kind of memorable! She is an absolutely fantastic doula.
