While I respect a woman's right to birth as she wishes, I am not willing to attend an intentionally unassisted home birth or "free birth" at which there is no medical care provider present.

My husband and I hired Brittany as our doula for the birth of our second child. We decided to hire a doula after having a negative experience with the hospital for the birth of our first child. As soon as Brittany came on board, we felt we made the right decision. Knowing she would be at the birth took a lot of pressure off us. I no longer worried about having to take charge in executing the birth I wanted. Brittany would be my advocate.
I had no idea about the broad range of services a doula offered. I thought they just showed up for the birth but I was impressed at the care Brittany provided in the months leading up to and even after the birth. She met with us before the birth to discuss our birth plan options and provide practice in pain management techniques. She had a lot of helpful massage techniques to help with back pain in the third trimester and during labor. She was available anytime I needed her and would check in with me throughout the pregnancy. I always felt as though I was her top priority.
Our labor and delivery went smoothly, thanks in large part to Brittany. Each time a decision needed to me made, she made sure I had the time and space I needed to weigh the pros and cons and make an informed decision. She worked well with my husband to offer all the support and encouragement I needed. She remembered the little details in our birth plan. Looking back, I only wish we had known about her for the birth of our first child.
I highly recommend Brittany.
We had our baby boy on February 17, 2017. While we had a C-section (planned due to the baby being breach), the interactions with Brittany before, during, and after the C-section were of great help to us. She was very well prepared for the prenatal meetings, contacting us before hand to make sure we knew what would be covered and sending us additional resources for us to read before the meetings, based on what we had the most concerns about. At the meetings themselves, she was extremely prepared and organized. She laid out options - benefits and risks in a professional manner. However her calm and warm personality made us feel more at ease. These meetings definitely calmed our worries about certain aspects of the process. During the C-section prep she made sure we had time to make decisions, and provided comfort, encouragement and support when the mother needed it during the C-section itself. While the father cut the cord and the baby was warmed enough for the mother to hold him, she stayed with the mother and relayed the information to her. She stayed for a couple of hours afterwards, and her presence was a great help to us. After the birth, she came by to do part of the cloth diaper meeting she offers (she was flexible in letting us do part of that in place of part of the normal meeting). Again, she was well organized and knowledgeable, and passed along numerous helpful links that covered what she normally would have done in the post partum visit, as well as information for cloth diapering. We highly recommend Brittany as a labor doula.
Brittany was extremely motivated to help us achieve our desired birth plan. She was well prepared for her visits, always quick to respond to our questions and she went the extra mile to ensure she was available when we needed her support.
Throughout her care, Brittany researched topics from childbirth hormones to cloth diapering so we could start our journey as informed as possible. During her prenatal visits and the labor, Brittany brought various tools (rebozo, tennis balls ect.) and lots of knowledge to give us a wide array of options to prepare and manage our transition to parenthood. We will miss hanging out with her and hope to stay in touch.
From the very first phone call I had with Brittany I was instantly comfortable and knew she would be the right choice to support my husband and I for the birth of our son. She was always available for any questions or anytime we needed a little support. On the night of our son's birth she was amazing. She was calm and caring which was very important to both my husband and I. I wanted to labor in the tub at the hospital and prior to me even getting into it she had soft white lighting and a led candle all set up. She helped support my husband with reassurance and suggestions about things he could do to support me. Once the birth time arrived she stood at my head and stroked my hair and reassured me that I was doing a great job when at one point I felt like I was not going to be able to continue. Once our son arrived she stayed with us for a little while to make sure we were all doing well. Our postpartum appointment was bittersweet since we had come to enjoy and bond with her and here we were saying goodbye. We will definitely be using her again should we have another child.
