Lila was the person I never knew I needed until I met her! I live in a very rural part of VA and wanted a VBAC for my second birth. I knew I needed to create support structures for this to happen and after the first time my husband and I met Lila, we knew she was the one for us. Throughout my preganancy, Lila helped just by being available and providing so much evidence based birth information (key for the doula and VBAC doubters in our family!)
Then when I went into labor, she kept me grounded and helped me actually realize I was in labor! Being about an hour from the hospital, she gave me the confidence to know and trust where my body was. I labored all night and Lila was such a great support to my husband and me, encouraging me and reminding me of how my body could do this! I should also mention that Lila was about 2 weeks from giving birth to her 4th child during all of this! In the end, I had my VBAC without meds and I really give a huge amount of credit to what Lila provided for us. Not just the physical support, but the emotional support and belief that I could have the birth I dreamed about.
Lila was my doula for my second and third home births. She was warm and encouraging and always available when I needed to talk. She frequently sent me affirmations and would check in with me after prenatal appointments. We met several times during my pregnancies to talk about my hopes and plans for my birth and she helped me to process aspects of my first birth that did not go as I had hoped. When I had important decisions to make she helped me to consider all possibilites and make an informed decision. She was always a source of loving, calming energy during frustrating or stressful situations. She accompanied me to the hospital when I had complications before the birth. During my births Lila provided pain-releiving counter pressure, encouraging and calming words, suggestions of different positions to try, and help with my other child who was present at the birth. She skillfully assisted my midwives when I had complications after delivering my baby. Lila asked what I would like to eat after giving birth and prepared a delicious meal for me. One of the lovliest things Lila did for me was light candles and string up lights in my bathroom while I took a wonderful bath after giving birth. It was so beautiful and the best bath of my life! She came back to visit with me post partum, brought me delicious food, and was extremely helpful with troubleshooting breastfeeding. Lila is such a kind and caring person and brings a positive energy and strength to pregnancy and birth. I highly recommend Lila as a birth doula!
Having Lila in our corner made all the difference in our birth experience! As first time parents, my husbad and I were so much more confident and comfortable throughout this process knowing that we had her on our side. She helped us think through our birth preferences and supported every single choice we made, and later, during labor, helped us remember the questions we wanted to ask and preferences we wanted to share with the L&D staff. The night I went into labor, she talked me through contractions at 3 am to help us decide when to head to the hospital when we were worried it was false labor (and Lila was right – it wasn’t!).
She was available to talk us through things at every step along the way, during pregnancy, labor, and even after our daughter was born. She spent most of an evening a few days after my daughter’s birth texting me lactation tips, ideas, and support, which was what got me through the early difficulties of breastfeeding. We can’t recommend her enough! I credit much of the smoothness of my birth experience to her complete, calming, and non-judgmental support.
Lila provided tremendous support for both of us (the parents) throughout the lengthy and arduous labor, which lasted nearly 30 hours and ended up in a C-section. She was our advocate: helping us communicate with healthcare providers our wishes (according to the birth plan), informing us and explaining to us the upcoming medical procedures. She helped comfort and massage the mother throughout the labor. She constantly reminded the mother to be calm and apply hypnobirthing skills that she had learned. Throughout a difficult and lengthy journey (with many different midwives and nurses coming in and out), she was a constant caretaker who was always with us, keeping us calm and helping us make the right decisions. For example, after 20 plus hours of labor, she helped us decide that, even though that it was not in our birth plan, it is the right thing to take pitocin and then later epidural. Similarly, at the end, that it was the right thing to do a necessary C-section. She was also with us through the operation, taking care of our emotional volatilities and taking memorable photos for us. Lila was not only our doula and guide throughout this process, she has also become a wonderful friend who listens without judgement.
Lila also provided extensive information of evidence-based best practices regarding many aspects of our labor, including how to write a birth plan, recommended stretches and exercises for mothers, what to expect at the day of delivery and afterwards. She provided excellent lactation consultancy as well as tips for recovery in postnatal visits.
I can’t say enough good things about Lila. She was an ally and support in every possible way before, during and after my birth experience. I was able to have a completely natural birth thanks to Lila’s expertise and guidance throughout labor. As first time parents, my husband and I had a lot of questions and concerns. Lila was accessible any time we were worried and talked us through any fears we had. Throughout the birth, she was an anchor for me and my husband. We were able follow our birth plan and I felt in control throughout the entire process. I would recommend Lila to anyone and everyone. She is fantastic!
Working with Lila was great! She was very knowledgeable and was really able to help us know what to expect (as this was my first pregnancy). Lila really took the time to get to know us and what kind of birth experience we wanted. I had no doubt she would advocate for us if needed. She was always very responsive when I had questions or concerns, and was a very calming presence during the birth. I’m working on convincing my husband to have a second child and, if successful, I plan to ask Lila to be my doula again.
I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy November 19, 2014. I contacted Lila (from the recommendation of a friend) and upon meeting, we connected. I immediately felt at ease and comfortable, as if I knew her for years. I expressed to her my issues and situation and without missing a beat, I knew I had a lifetime friend. I want to pursue a natural birth, at home even. But when I was told I had gestational diabetes, I knew things might change a bit for me. Lila was there every step of the way. Sending daily, weekly, and monthly checks; she even drove to meet with me at my house a few times to ensure I was ready (mentally, physcially, and emotionally). I cannot express how good it felt to have someone solely in your corner... listening to your wants and needs when it came to bringing a life into this world.
I remember the night I went into labor... it was late, around 9 pm and I contacted her that I thought my mucus plug came out. She told me to lay down and try to get some rest (she later told me she knew I would go into labor that night).... 3 hours later, my water broke. I called her panicking because my water had a brownish/greenish tint to it. She said I had no choice to go to the hospital (our birth plan was to try to labor at home as long as possible). Lila lived about 2 hours from me and arrived in a speedy manner and did not leave my side (I labored for almost 24 hours)... She is definitely a CATERER!! I remember after giving birth, she came and visited me to ensure I was lacatating properly and mentally well. She even brought me some fresh veggies from her garden. My son is almost 3 and a half, and I still feel like if I ever have an issue or need assistance, Lila is simply a phone call away. She was not only my doula, she will be my forever friend and I'm forever grateful! Thank you Dr. Pierce
From the start, Lila was very supportive of what my husband and myself wanted out of our birth. She never pushed her own thoughts/opinions on us as other doulas had when we interviewed them. She was available by text even when it wasn't my on call time and offered a lot of support during my pregnancy. During my labor, Lila arrived and jumped right in to offer my husband some rest. She rubbed my back and encouraged me that I could have the natural birth I wanted. When things did not go as planned and my husband and I made the decision to use Pitocin, Lila supported us. She encouraged me constantly and offered relief methods to help ease my labor pains. When the pain was becoming severe, Lila continuously offered me encouragement and relief methods and reminded me of what I had said prior to labor of not wanting an epidural no matter what. She advocated for what I wanted even up until the end to remind the doctor that I did not want the cord cut until after it stopped pulsating. She was amazing. She has a kindness to her and warmth that made my husband and I feel so comfortable. If I had to do it all over again, I would choose Lila again.
