My wife and I first met Melissa at a baby expo in Augusta, GA. We had never heard of a doula before. After listening to Melissa explain what a doula is, we took one of her cards. I don’t remember exactly what I said after, but it was something like, “that sounds like some seriously hippy stuff.” That was the last we had discussed a doula until months later. While sitting in a baby class, the instructor brought in a doula to speak. It was Melissa. After hearing Melissa talk to the class that night, it didn’t seem so “hippy” after all. We decided to give Melissa a call. She is truly passionate about being a doula. She is tremendously supportive of the mother-to- be, a calming presence and seems to blend into the delivery room as if she has been doing this all of her life - almost like a part of the hospital medical team. She is extremely thoughtful, nurturing, and flexible, and most of all, she truly has the best interests and concerns of the mother and father forefront in her mind.
If you are thinking of hiring a Melissa as a doula, I would suggest that you do it as soon as possible. You will not regret having her with you. If you’re a man, and think it sounds a little weird or “hippy” or whatever, or if you are on the fence and not sure if it’s worth the money, trust me, it is. Delivery is an indescribably stressful time. Melissa will be there to absorb much of that stress, and in doing so make the delivery a more memorable experience for everyone involved.
I would like to note one other thing about Melissa: After we had met with Melissa and discussed hiring her as a doula, my wife and I asked my wife’s physician what she thought about doulas. At first, the doctor got a look on her face that didn’t explaining, but then she changed her expression and said, “You know, there is one doula that I do like having in the delivery room. Her name is Melissa (Schultz).”
Highly recommend Melissa. She came to our house for her visits which was great since I had a 2 year old at the time. She is kind and understanding. She provided us with a plethora of information that most doctors don’t even take the time to tell you or inform you. She gave me exercises to do and thoroughly explained everything. When I went into labor at 6 am she helped me know what to do next and we met up at the hospital. I wasn’t too far along so we spent maybe an hour or so walking around the hospital and doing different things to help progress labor. The hospital sent me home and Melissa came over and stayed with us all day long. My husband was shown how to help me and it was great. Much better than the previous labor I had had with my first. We didn't have a doula with our first and I wish we would have. I loved laboring at home with Melissa’s help. When we thought it was time to go in, we went to the hospital. The hospital checked me and thought that I wouldn’t deliver my baby anytime soon and they said I should go home. We were all shocked because I had been laboring all day and contractions were 6 minutes apart consistently. My husband and I decided to stay, and Melissa was going to go home and shower and come right back. It was about 9:30 pm at that time. About 15 min later, after Melissa had left my water broke and the nurse checked me and declared that the cord had prolapsed and I needed an emergency c-section. My husband and I were in shock but they wheeled me away very quickly. My husband got in contact with Melissa right away and she came right then. She made it back to the hospital before I was done with surgery. The baby was already born and she helped my husband out. She showed him how to do skin to skin contact with the baby which was so important to us. She helped my husband out tremendously. We had no family at the hospital with us to help so we are forever thankful Melissa was there with us. Highly recommend her!
It’s hard to even put into words how incredible it was having Melissa by our side. I’m 4 months postpartum now and I still think about our experience like it just happened an hour ago. My 1st birth experience was pretty traumatic, my 2nd birth experience was truly a JOY and something I’ve dreamed about repeating. If it was not for all the knowledge, wisdom, encouragement, support, and friendship that Melissa brought to the table I do not believe it would have been as sweet as it was! Melissa was more than a “Doula” for us, she was a constant friend who brought us so much hope! I never want to give birth again without her, and hope that I don’t have too! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
Melissa did a fantastic job as our doula for our first born. My husband and I had just relocated to a new city at 32 weeks pregnant. I reached out to her on the phone before moving to get an idea about local hospitals and midwives and she was so incredibly friendly and helpful I knew shed be a good fit for us. I am very much an overthinker “googler” and she was still super patient with all my questions. During labor (which was two days long!) she was by my side every step of the way and gave me the confidence to fight for the birth I wanted. She was also very responsive and helpful postpartum which was a life saver during those overwhelming first few weeks. All in all I would definitely recommend hiring her as your doula. I know I will for our next child!
I started looking for a doula around the second trimester. I had heard great things about birthing coaches from close family friends and mommy groups I was apart of on social media, but Melissa was way beyond what I had expected. She came recommended through a friend of a friend along with two other doulas in the area. What was wonderful about Melissa was from the start was she is so easy to talk to and very knowledgeable. My husband and I being first time parents were clueless when it came to pregnancy, labor and parenting – we have no family close by. Melissa eased our worries with her expertise. Approaching the end of term, things got kind of hairy as talk of an induction was on the table. Melissa once again talked me through the procedure and gave me some relevant questions to ask my OB. Her explanations are in depth and understood from a nonmedical background. I was induced three weeks before my due date and she came to the hospital the night I was induced and stayed with me the entire next day for delivery. Above a beyond. Her emotional support and knowledge helped carry us through the birth of our son. Her exercises and birthing positions made laboring go smoothly. Hiring Melissa was the best decision I made. 6 weeks pp and shes still checking in on our new family. I would hire Melissa again in a heartbeat.
After my first two births I knew I wanted a doula for my third. My first two births were not at all what I had expected (though you never know what to expect and all births are different). My first baby was posterior and I had an epidural. My second was a surprise breech after 25 hours of labor and ended with a c-section. I wanted my third baby to be in the correct position, and I knew I wanted an non-medicated VBAC. I will admit I was a little hesitant to sign a contract with Melissa because she wasn't as experienced as some of the other doulas in the area, but we met and I knew she was going to be the right person to support me during my upcoming birth. Melissa was FANTASTIC! She always had information on ways to help with my minor pains during my pregnancy. She had exercises that I followed (as much as I could) in order to help baby be in the correct position for birth, and I truly believe it's one of the reasons my birth experience was better this time around. When labor started she was on her way as soon as we called. She showed my husband how he could support me. It was great to have the support of her and my husband to go through labor! I ended up having a successful non-medicated VBAC, and I could not be happier with my birthing experience. If we have another we will definitely use Melissa again, we absolutely loved having her at our third birth!
we were expecting our second baby. I had a doula for our first baby and knew I wanted to hire a doula again. Melissa was recommended so we decided to set up a time to meet. She was amazing from the start. I pretty much knew how I wanted my labor to go and she was 100% on board. We decided to hire Melissa. she talked to us before the labor and helped me find ways to stay comfortable especially while playing with my 1 year old. I talked to her about having postpartum depression, I had it bad with my son. She let me know she would be a life line if I needed her. My contractions started around midnight and I handled it well it home for a while. Around 0330 they were getting closer so my husband called Melissa and she met us at the hospital. She jumped right in and helped me stick to my birth plan. I sat on a yoga ball for most of my labor and she did a lot of hip squeezes to help me. At one point I decided I wanted medicine (not in my birth plan) the nurse said she would check me to see what my options were. i was 8cm and an epidural was my only option (I refused). After being checked my water broke and I transitioned. Melissa asked if I wanted to get off my back since she knew that's not how I wanted to labor. The nurse went to call my doctor but it was to late. I was ready to push even though the nurse told me to wait. melissa was my rock along with my husband and within a minute my daughter was born and on the bed. The cord was around her neck and the nurses were removing it. Melissa was extremely supportive and told me what was happening. My daughter was okay and they laid her on me. Meliss helped me with our first nursing seasion and even took some pictures for us. Daughter showed up about 5-7 minutes later and finished cleaning me up. After I went home Melissa came to visit and talked about how I was feeling. I knew she was there to help even after labor and that helped me. She was a wonderful life line and we couldn't have done it without her.
We decided to get a doula quite late in the third trimester, my husband and I had just moved to a new city. Melissa was kind enough to accommodate me. She answered all my questions and helped me cope up with all challenges physically and emotionally of being a first time mom. Her dedication and her expertise on child birth is above excellence. Hiring her as my doula was the best decision I made. She has extensive knowledge on every issue realated to pregnancy and post partum. She was with me during the journey and even after the baby was born she provided me and my husband with valuable information about all aspects of being new parents. What I love about Melissa was that she was not judgemental and is very easy get along with. For me it was super important to have a good connection with the doula, Melissa was so good with all my questions and insecurities. I interviewed a few of them. She was JUST AMAZING during delivery,as I had a long labor. 31 hours - she was with me all throughout before and after as well. Her massage therapy and the constant reassurance helped me get through my labor. Melissa is best doula you will find. And I highly recommend her. She is empathic, hard working and brings detailed knowledge coupled with experience on almost every situation related to child birth to the table. Another important aspect was she has a great relationship with the hospital and doctors in all augusta hospitals. This is a very important thing for me. Her rapport is good with nurses. This a big plus as during labor u need a good team. Her patience was something extraordinary! I'm very curious about all aspects and ask several questions and I can be stubborn at times.. She was so sweet about all my doubts about myself and the whole birth journey. She will give you time and I can guarantee you will no be able to find a better doula.
Melissa was an amazing support throughout the entire birth process, from prenatal to postpartum. She is very knowledgeable about the latest research and pointed me to great resources. I labored for more than two days, and Melissa was there for me throughout the entire process. She helped give me the confidence and coping mechanisms I needed to get through labor. I highly recommend Melissa as a doula!
While in my 3rd trimester my family got word we were moving down South for a job relocation. I franctically started looking up Doula's online as I could never birth with out one. We were to move in two weeks at 36 weeks pregnant with our 3rd. I was to have my first Hospital birth. I knew that a Doula and a supportive provider were super important to helping me meet my birth goals. I hit the jackpot meeting and hiring Melissa for my birth. She was everything I wanted in a Doula. Melissa has a calming presence and was on top of making sure my birth environment was just what I needed. She made sure I was well nourished, gave me ice packs and plenty of lower back pressure to help me get through transition and also through a unexpected antibiotic allergic reaction. She helped us navigate a hospital birth by explaining things and ensuring our wishes were always met to make it most comfortable for us. My Husband and I are so grateful for her service to us. Thank you Melissa for helping us create a special memory for our baby's birth! You are amazing!
Melissa was amazing. I believe we were her first twin birth so things were a little different than that of a singleton. We hired her late in the pregnancy but she was there every step of the way. If it werent for her and my partner my birth wouldn't have went the way it did or the way I wanted. She was so supportive and really helped my partner and I through ever contraction and pain. She came for her post partum visit and really helped me not feel like I was failing. It's been hard with the twins but Melissa has helped me in so many ways. I would recommend her to absolutely anyone!
My birthing experience was fantastic! I feel like very few women ever say that. I decided a month before I was due to deliver that I was going to try not to have an epidural. In an effort for my husband's survival, he suggested that we hire a doula. This was by far the best gift that he could have given me. Having the experience of a doula in the room with us made the birthing experience amazing. I felt like the pain was difficult, but very managable because of the support that I had. Melissa offered guidance through the entire birth...starting with a phone call at 2 a.m. She was able to give me the confidence I needed to listen to what my body needed to make it through this challenging journey. As a first time mom, I did not know what to expect. Melissa guided me and gave me a certain calmness because she knew what she was doing. There were times when all of the nurses left the room. It was a great feeling to have someone with experience stay with us.
Not only did Melissa help with the labor and delivery, she also came to my house for a prenatal and a postnatal meeting. During the prenatal meeting she told me what to expect and gave me stretches that would help during delivery. In the postnatal meeting she made sure that breastfeeding was going as plained and made sure that I was doing alright. She also does an amazing job of checking on her clients to make sure that all is going well. I feel very comfortable emailing her questions and concerns.
I know this sounds a little over exaggerated, but my labor and delivery went perfectly and I could not imagine not having a doula. I would recommend Melissa to anyone having a baby, whether it be with or without an epidural or a c-section.
Melissa was such an encouragement and so supportive throughout my pregnancy, labor, delivery, and post-partum. She answered so many questions, gave great advice, was supportive and helpful during labor and also after the delivery. I could not have had the experience I had without Melissa. I am so grateful and blessed to have had her as a doula for my first time experiencing birth and taking care of a newborn. I am also so very glad to call her my friend. smile emoticon I would highly recommend Melissa. I would also suggest looking at hiring her for post-partum care if you happen to be at a place where you don't have much of a support system. She's wonderful!!
We Absolutely loved our doula Melissa. I had to have a c-section. I didn't think Melissa would stick around but she assured me that she would. I was so glad. She was so understanding and well informed. She made my husband feel comfortable about having a doula. On our visits she would ask me questions and wanted to know what I want. They day of our c-section she was there. Talking to me and my husband. Keeping us calm. After the c-section she was in the room with me and helped me nurse my daughter. Melissa you are wonderful! If I get pregnant I will want you as my doula again!!!!!
Melissa was incredible before, during, and after my labor! I always came away from our prenatal chats feeling better prepared for labor. A week past my due date my doctor wanted to induce and Melissa helped me put together a list of questions to ask to help us decide what to do. When the decision was made to induce, Melissa was so supportive and came very early to the hospital to help me engage my body to try and get labor jump started. Melissa stayed by my side all day despite no progress. She reminded me of things I wanted to ask my doctor, she refilled water cups, and kept me moving and still reminding me to rest. Once labor got intense she was so encouraging to me and my husband. She remembered positions I previously said I liked and she reminded me to do the ddifferent things I'd mentioned that were important to me (like music playing, using my pile, emptying my bladder frequently, etc). She even snapped some photos of my daughters birth! After delivery she stayed with me until I was settled in. Over the next few days and weeks she checked in on me numerous times, helped me with breastfeeding, and answered countless questions! I am so grateful for her calming presence during pregnancy and labor! She made me feel more prepared for birth and helped me to have a wonderful labor and delivery!
Melissa's skills, encouragement, and soothing nature helped to make our little girl's labor a beautiful and more memorable process both in our time laboring at home and at the hospital. She was even a constant strength to me in providing encouragement before and after the birth. She was a comfort to me and a very welcomed aid to my husband during labor. She even helped with our two year old personally driving him to the babysitter when labor was slowed down! She continually had suggestions about what to do next and her encouragement put me and my husband at ease. Because of Melissa I truly believe we had a smoother more beautiful birthing experience! We had our doubts on wether a doula was truly necessary but after experiencing two births one with and one with out I know the help of Melissa was invaluable and totally worth it! I plan to depend on her for any future children we have. Thank you Melissa!
