Prior to my wife becoming pregnant, I had never even heard of the concept of a Doula. Luckily my wife had, because the presence of Bethany throughout the process was so helpful, that I can't even imagine how it would have gone without her. I first met Bethany the day before my wife would go into labor (two weeks early). We went over a wide variety of methods to soothe and ease the pain throughout the process. She seemed extremely positive and cheerful upon first impressions. The next day my wife unexpectedly began labor. She was giving birth in Harrisburg and I was living and working in the Williamsport area, so Bethany actually arrived at the hospital before me because I had to drive a couple of hours. I was happy to know that someone was there with my wife when I couldn't be. The labor process lasted until the following day (approx 36 hrs) and I am not sure that Bethany took any time for herself (including sleeping) the whole time. She always remained composed, confident, and above all else positive. Her methods were very professional, and her personality is so kind, that by the end of the process, I felt like I had known her for years. Her help allowed for me to better enjoy the beauty of the experience instead of just fretting over the logistics of it. Our son is now 11 weeks old, and our family couldn't be happier! If you choose Bethany as your Doula, I personally guarantee, you won't regret it!!
I was lucky enough to connect with Bethany just weeks before my due date. My husband and I had been on the fence about whether or not to use a doula. This was our first baby and I decided it would ease my mind to have someone with more experience with us for support every step of the way. The day after my husband and I met with Bethany, I went into labor (two weeks early)! One moment, this woman was a stranger. The next, she would be a part of the most intimate, most wonderful time in my husband's and my lives. And I knew from the moment I met her that I would feel comfortable and COMFORTED to have her with us. We were in labor over 24 hours and Bethany was with us every step of the way. Aside from making suggestions about things to try to speed up delivery and to deal with contractions, she helped in unexpected and invaluable ways. For example, she helped me to tactfully handle having only my husband with me during labor and delivery - she helped communicate that to beloved family members and appease them by updating them periodically with texts. This was a stress relief for my husband and me. It was so nice to know that it was being handled. Bethany advocated for me and my birth plan throughout the process. Sometimes I forgot things I wanted and she would pipe in to remind the nurse or midwife of something that was important to me. Like so many births, mine didn't go exactly how I envisioned. In fact, our son was whisked off to NICU when he was born. Bethany helped me take things in stride, made sure I knew what was going on and to feel okay with the situation. Finally, I would say that the best thing Bethany did for us was to help my husband that day. She was able to be his support system as much as she was able to be mine. Bethany will forever be a part of our and our baby Oscar's lives. I am so glad she was a part of his joining our world. Lisa M
Working with Bethany Barger as a doula was a wonderful experience for my second child. She shared some many ideas and techniques for giving birth that I didn't know even after already having given birth. Beth was very open and welcoming to ideas as well and doing whatever I felt comfortable with doing. I could count on her to jump in when I needed her and to also step back if I wanted that as well. As soon as my husband called Beth she left to be on her way arriving at the hospital in a timely manner, more timely than I would have expected. We jumped right into it by walking the halls and stopping to do some exercises. She was a great coach and gave great advice when things started to slow down and where to go next. She was there when the pain came and she was so helpful to me and my husband. I wish I had known about a doula for my first pregnancy. If I was having more children Beth would be right there with my husband of who I would want next to me. Thank you Beth!
I am so happy that I hired Beth to be my doula! From the first day my husband and I met her we knew we wanted to have her help us with the birth of our daughter. She radiates positivity and love and is extremely knowledgeable. She loves what she does and it really showed in her interactions with us. On the day our daughter decided to arrive, Beth was there and did a wonderful job of keeping me focused and helping my husband help me. With her help I was able to get through much of my labor without an epidural (which I originally planned to get as soon as possible). She even had me laughing during labor! Hiring her was a wonderful decision worth every penny!
