I served as a volunteer birth doula for Wake Med Hospital from August 2013- December 2013.

When I was looking for a doula, I wanted someone who would help educate and prepare us for birth, bring a calming and positive energy to the process, and provide physical support (massage, pressure points, etc.) for me during labor. What I didn't realize I'd need is someone who also has an incredible stamina, assist my husband when needed, document the birth in ways I wouldn't fully appreciate until months down the road, and continue to provide information and emotional support postpartum. Stephanie was all of those things for our family and more!
I ended up having an induction and when Stephanie joined us in the hospital, I was feeling helpless and very anxious. I remember Stephanie came in the room, but down her bag, and started to light flameless candles, play music I had picked out, etc. My husband had to step out and told me later that when he came back in, I was sitting up, smiling, and joking with her (through the pitocin!) and that he was so grateful for her wisdom, insight, and positive energy.
Stephanie's hip compressions and tennis ball massage on my back were the focal points that got me through the contractions. In 'labor land' you lose track of time, and I was impressed when my husband said she tirelessly did them with each contraction for hours on end. Also, even though medication wasn't part of the original plan, she fully supported my decision to have some Fentanyl before starting to push.
She took some photos of our early labor (which I was indifferent to at the time but now cherish), and after our daughter was born, she made sure to take early photos of her on my belly, getting her first weigh-in, and of my husband cutting the cord. Those pictures are so special to us and, along with the birth story she gave to us afterwards, are such an important part of our birth story. Stephanie was an amazing resource for us and brought a wonderful energy to our birth as our doula!
As soon as I met Stephanie, I knew she was the right match for our family. We met at a Panera and my toddler was running around like a crazy person. Stephanie was patient and engaging. She was warm and prepared for our meeting and continued to be warm and prepared the rest of our time together. We had a scare at 35 weeks while traveling, and Stephanie was available by phone to give lots of reassurance. We thought we were in labor several times before our son was finally born at 41 weeks 6 days, and Stephanie always made herself available. When we finally made it to the Birth Center for labor, Stephanie arrived with chick-fil-a and an amazingly peaceful presence. With my husband supporting me at the front and Stephanie providing me with counter pressure and massage on my back, I was able to manage 11 hours of back labor unmedicated. The three of us were a team, and I so appreciated the way she supported my husband and provided him with gentle suggestions. I feel like he was able to be more present with me during this labor than my last because she was there. I don't know If I could have made it as long as I did without her.
Stephanie came by a week later to provide postpartum doula services. She made me an awesome herbal bath, made cookies with my 2 year old, and helped with light house chores while I rested. My only regret was not giving her a chance to bind my belly to help with postpartum recovery. She was so incredibly helpful that day, and the soup she brought us was delicious!
When I was pregnant, I did a lot of research on natural birth and hospital birth. I decided that having a hospital birth with a doula was my happy medium.
I lliked Stephanie right away when I met her. She is very knowledgable about birth and parenting and helped explain a lot of things to me. She was very supportive of my birthing choices
During my labor, Stephanie was a calming presence. She helped support me through my contractions with visualizations and massage. I kept thinking that Stephanie had two babies naturally (and one more since then) so I could do it too! My labor was long and difficult but in the end, just what I hoped for: a vaginal birth with minimal interventions.
Stephanie visited me several times after my daughter was born and we still keep in touch. I know Stephanie can help any woman have whatever type of birth they want!
I could not have gone through with a natural birth without Stephanie's help! Her gentle demeanor was soothing, and her rice sock and counter pressure were essential. She reminded me to keep calm and focus on my breathing. She encouraged me when I didn't think I could do it anymore. My husband appreciated her taking turns with him while I labored. Husband alone wasn't good enough bc he didn't do it as well. She guided him and suggested things for me. They were both my stirrups while pushing. She gave me great support before and after birth.
My experience with Stephanie was absolutely amazing. During my pregnancy, I was nervous about the labor/delivery process and, being a first time mom, had no clue what to expect or how things would go. I got the idea to have a doula from a friend and knew Stephanie was the perfect choice. We spent lots of time preparing for my labor and she was very receptive to what my ideal birthing experience would be. She coached me beautifully during my labor and delivery, made sure all of my wishes were met, was very patient and attentive and was by my side through each contraction. I was able to deliver a healthy 6 pound, 5 ounce baby girl completely unmedicated and naturally, just like I wanted too. I really do believe that without Stephanie's support and guidance, my labor would not have gone so smoothly. She is so wonderful at what she does and when I'm ready for baby #2, she will absolutely be involved again :)
