We were blessed to have Amy as a doula for the births of both our children. Our first birth in 2011 was a planned hospital birth with very high hopes of a natural delivery. When the doctor told me I needed a c-section my hopes were completely crushed. Utter disappointment flooded the room as tears filled the eyes of everyone present. If it weren't for Amy I'm not sure how I would have coped with the reality that, despite my best efforts, our baby needed this. Her strength and encouragement was unwavering. Fast forward two years - our son joined us in the most healing, amazing home birth. Let's just say this birth was a lot more fun (yes, fun!) for everyone involved. Amy was there for us through the most traumatic and most joyful moments in our lives. You may not always have the exact birth you desire, but you can have the support to face any situation. Amy truly has a servant's heart. She is compassionate, insightful, and genuine. We will invite her to share in all of our births!
Amy attended my second son's birth at home. My first son's birth in a hospital was filled with interventions that caused his fetal distress and I ended up with a c-section. My son suffered terrible distress due to high dose pitocin and for an hour and a half while they waited for the doctor to arive, the hospital nurses left the pitocin running at a high dose despite his heart rate in the 60's. Then I hemorrhaged during the c-section. We were separated after birth for 8 hours due to his breathing problems (TTN) from the c-section. The hospital also fed him formula at that time despite my requests to bring him to me for breastfeeding! It was terrible for the both of us and I wanted a different outcome the second time around. At the last minute, I ended up planning a home vbac. I knew I would need support and encouragement to deal with the pain. She immediately met with me after I contacted her (then I was already 39 weeks). My first impression was that she was funny, kind, sincere, peaceful, and very experienced personally and professionally. She was very sympathetic about my first birth experience. When I went into labor a week and three days later, she arrived at my home shortly after I called her at 2am despite being quite some distance away (she actually got pulled over by a police officer speeding to my home in the middle of the night!). My pain was an 11 out of 10 until she arrived, then she decreased my pain to a 2 out of 10 and I was sleeping about one hour later. She guided me through relaxation techniques and positions that allowed me to tolerate the pain. She was a strong emotional and physical support throughout the entire labor and delivery and I couldn't have done it without her. She never left my side during the entire labor and she even had me laughing when I pushed my baby out! Amy is amazing. She took pictures and sent me a birth story afterwards. If I were to have another baby, I would hire her again, without hesitation.
Throughout our whole birth process (before, during, and after), Amy had this amazing ability to combine knowledge with grace. Never once did she tell us what to believe or do, but she simply answered our questions, provided the knowledge she has from her research and personal experience, and facilitated our making each and every decision along the way. The nurses at the hospital even remarked at how well she fit in during the birth, and how respectful she always was at every step-- never pushy, just a constant support. Amy helped both my husband and I feel empowered for the birth, and that was a priceless feeling. She wrote up a wonderful birth story, and even took photos for us! After my daughter was born, I kept in touch about issues I was having with breastfeeding. Amy was able to give me some "tough love" which was really instrumental in helping me make the decision to continue breastfeeding. I'm still going strong at 13 months, and much of that is due to Amy's help!
Amy is amazing! We used her with our first pregnancy. She met with us several times before our baby was born to discuss our birth plans and we immediately loved her. Very warm and a wealth of knowlege! She was a tremendous help and encouragement during the birth. Great at knowing ways to help alleviate pain. She as "hands on" as you need or want her to be and will be right there by your side every step of the way. She is also excellent in speaking on your behalf to nurses and the dr.'s. One of my most precious treasures is the birth timeline of my daughter, her birth story and the pictures Amy put on a cd for us. I am so impressed with all she knows about pregnancy, birthing, nursing, cloth diapering, baby wearing and the list goes on and on... After the birth of our second baby, I experienced a lot of problems with thrush, yeast, ductal yeast, relactating, and trying to nurse my son again after 4 months of pumping and feeding him through a bottle. She has had a lot of personal exprerience in many of these areas and I am eternally indebted to her for all the help and support she was to me while I was going thru all of this. She was ALWAYS there for me to call or email and came over anytime I needed her. She's the BEST and you would never regret using her! Thank you so much, Amy!
We used Amy with the birth of our first child, and were so happy with her, and the services she provided. We met with her several times before the delivery to discuss a birth plan, pain management, and the birth process in general. She was so knowledgable, but also really helped us decide what we wanted... At the hospital, she was very helpful in letting the staff know what I wanted and did not want, which was great, especially since I wasn't up to doing that. I had a long labor (almost 18 hours), and Amy was with us the whole time. She helped my husband coach me, and offered help with pain management. I really don't think that I would have been able to deliver naturally if she had not been there encouraging me. After our beautiful baby was born, Amy was so helpful with breastfeeding. I called her multiple times with all sorts of questions, and she is always available and willing to answer my questions (about anything too -- cloth diapering, home schooling, vaccinations, etc).
Probably the thing that was the most special about having Amy there was the birth timeline and pictures that she took. My husband was so focused on me, that he wouldn't have been able to do these things. Amy created a detailed journal of my labor and delivery and gave it to us, as well as pictures of the whole process. We treasure those! We would highly reccommend Amy as a doula!
My husband and I HIGHLY recommend Amy! As first time parents, she was exactly what we were looking for in a birth doula. She met with us during our pregnancy to discuss the process of labor/delivery, our wants/needs, our "ideal birth", and helped us create an extensive birth plan. At 40 weeks, our midwife thought the baby may be breech and Amy met us at the hospital for an ultrasound and possibly inversion. Thank goodness no inversion was needed, but Amy talked us through the experience and eased our emotions. At 41 weeks, I finally went into labor at 4:00 am and Amy was on the other end of the phone talking us through early labor - I might also add that she was 20-something weeks pregnant with her 5th child at the time! She met us at the birthing center at 8:30 and assisted my husband in my pain management with massage, encouragement, and attending to my needs. Amy was a God-send and I can't imagine our next birth without her at our side. She visited us at home a week later and brought the most precious gift ever - a timeline of our daughter's birthday! It is a wonderful addition to her birth records. We now think of Amy as part of our family - that's just how much she has impacted our lives. ;)
