My husband and I met Rebecca in 2013 through the birthing class she was running. The program was very good but Rebecca’s expertise made all the difference. We were pregnant with twins, a high risk pregnancy due to my age, and planning a natural child birth. We quickly realized what an asset Rebecca would be in labor and delivery. I was induced due to some potential kidney issues with my son, but fortunately everyone was cooperating and we were on our way to a natural delivery. Rebecca was there from the word go! I love my OB, but she was busy :-) attending to the matter of getting my kids out. Amongst the other 15 people ( trainees, nurses other docs, lots of curious on- lookers) in the room it, was great having two people there from the start, working with me to manage my labor. My husband very much appreciated the help. Thirty six hours later - she was one of the first people to hold my babies. I would highly recommend Rebecca, regardless of your birthing situation, she adds a calming knowledgeable presence that is an asset in a otherwise emotionally charged environment.
Having Rebecca Urban (and her co-doula, Ashley Bennett) as our Doula for the birth of our first child was the best decision my husband and I made. I highly recommend Rebecca and would be honored to work with her again if/when we have another child.
My husband and I took the Bradley course, which we enjoyed and it helped us to feel confident and empowered, however we both knew that we wanted the support of a doula during labor/birth.
Rebecca (and Ashley) supported us prior to the birth by helping us through managing care choices with a breech baby (who turned with a successful ECV), switching care providers (three times), and answering any question large or small. They made extra time for us and responded to anything we asked to make sure we were comfortable and informed throughout the process.
During labor - I went into labor around 9pm at home and Rebecca was in constant contact with my husband, advising and counseling him on when we should head to the hospital. My water broke around 2 am and we arrived at Mt. Auburn at 3 am - which was ideal given I was 5-6 cm dilated. Rebecca met us at the hospital and instantly got to work by supporting me with various comfort measures.
During labor all I wanted was Rebecca by my side. She applied pressure, poured water on my back (as I was in the tub), utilized essential oils and various visualizations to help me cope. I felt safe and held by Rebecca and I ultimately had a successful natural birth thanks to her continuous support. Natural birth was extremely challenging in the moment, looking back I'd want to do it again and with Rebecca!
Rebecca is hands down amazing. Her energy exudes confidence and calmness, which helped me relax and know that I am in good hands.
In summary - worth her weight in gold and the best money spent during pregnancy- we would easily have paid Ashley + Rebecca double what they charge. - Ashley + Mike
Wow! Where to begin. My husband was the one that suggested we hire a doula in addition to taking a birth class. Upon signing up for Rebecca's Bradley class (which was so informative it deserves its own review) we learned that she was a doula as well. It was great getting to know her over the course of the class in addition to our doula meetings because we were able to really get to know Rebecca and she was able to really know who we were as a couple.
The knowledge that we gained from her class, combined with Rebecca's experience and expertise as a doula led us to have the birth experience we were hoping for. As a first time mom, I wasn't completely sure what to expect, as one can never know exactly how their labor and delivery will go. Rebecca really followed our lead and supported me in laboring however I felt necessary while also providing suggestions, comfort, and reminding me to drink water!
We are so pleased with how the birth of our daughter went and would highly recommend Rebecca's services.
We had a wonderful experience with Rebecca and plan to work with her again when we have another baby! The support she provides is three-fold--mental, physical, and emotional--as you prepare for the arrival of your little one (or ones!)
Rebecca is highly informed and provides a balanced perspective towards educating you about preparing for your labor/birth and arrival of your baby. She builds on a wealth of personal/professional experience working with moms and other practitioners and because of this, we had all the facts we needed headed into labor and knew what to expect. An extension of this preparation is gaining recommendations for additional resources from her professional network such as postpartum doulas, lactation consultants, new mom groups, etc. Midway in my pregnancy, Rebecca recommended our OB which ended up being one of the best decisions of all.
She provided encouragement and reassurance my pregnancy and labor were normal and that we were on track and doing well. Frequent touch points (in-person meetings, text messages, phone calls) are the proof Rebecca genuinely cared how I and the baby were doing. And during the labor, she knew just when to offer soothing and encouraging words versus when to make more firm, coaching suggestions (changing position, etc.). These two tactics paired with (non-medicated) comfort measures (counter pressure, massage, etc.) greatly helped reduce my pain, ease my discomfort during contractions and maintain my confidence I could continue laboring and allow my natural childbirth to progress to unfold more easily.
When you choose to work with Rebecca you will surely discover right away being a doula is her true calling. You can tell she genuinely loves what she does and cares about her clients: mom, partner and baby too! After working with Rebecca I couldn't see another way to give birth and very much plan to hire her in the future should we be fortunate again to be pregnant with baby #2.
I wanted to thank you for your incredible help during the birth. It was so reassuring having you by our side those intense hours of labor, getting to ask you questions when things felt scary or unknown, feeling confident in your answers, knowing you've done this yourself and have been there with other moms so many times. Your calm demeanor helped me know that what was happening was normal, even when my body was saying otherwise. I'm so grateful for all you taught us in class, especially about counter pressure (soo necessary), the various stages of labor, the benefits of having a water birth, and all about my birthing options so that I could come up with a clear birth plan (that actually came true!) You really could not have prepared us better.
Your contributions to our birth experience helped bring us closer as a couple and prepared us for establishing a loving realtionship with our daughter. I recommend that everyone take your Bradley method class and hire you as their doula! The combo is adds up to way more than just Class + Doula. We are also excited for our post-partum meeting coming up soon. Thank you Rebecca!
I would highly recommend Rebecca Urban as a doula. Her experience is unparalleled, and when there are so many different, unexpected things that can happen during a birth, having someone who's seen it all is incredibly valuable. She was very helpful in helping us to determine when to go in, which is one of the most critical decisions that will influence how your birth progresses. I was in constant contact with her as my labor began and I felt more confident in my decision to not go in until I really needed to because she was aware of every development. Hearing other stories of going in too early, and labor delays, subsequent inductions, which can ultimately result in c-sections, I really think having her trusted support prior to going into the hospital was the most important thing.
When we did go in, she took charge. Being very familiar with the hospital (Mt. Auburn) she knew which room to ask for with the biggest tub. (I was not in a condition to really talk or think straight!) When we got in she told me to get in that tub, even though at first I wasn't sure I wanted to. Oh was I glad for that. It was very helpful during labor to be in the tub and Rebecca was pouring water over me. She was also great with the nurse, who would look to Rebecca for guidance at times, which was awesome because Rebecca knew exactly what my wishes and preferences were. (Nothing against the nurse, she was great too, as were all the people I encountered at Mt. Auburn.)
How a doula interacts with the hospital staff is also super important, because there's potential for a lot of tension in a rapidly changing situation. Rebecca was both assertive on my behalf and thoughtful about when and how to talk to the staff to stay on their good side. Overall, I had a really great experience and was so happy for my decision to use Rebecca.
When I became pregnant with our daughter, my husband and I were insterested in an unmedicated birth and wanted to enroll in a Bradley Method birthing class to prepare. I had several friends who had taken Rebecca's course in Somerville and highly recommended it. So, we signed up. At the time, I was also trying to decide if we should hire a doula. Due to some health complications, I needed to give birth in a hospital setting (fortunately I could still work with midwives) and there was a strong possibility that I would be unable to have an epidural if needed. Considering the circumstances, we thought it wise to have a knowledgeable advocate and support for both my husband and me throughout the pregnancy and birthing process.
After our first class, my husband and I decided to hire Rebecca as our doula. We were impressed by the breadth and depth of her knowledge, her enthusiasm, warmth, and experence with many different birth settings. My husband especially appreciated how she did not completely reject the idea of medical interventions when necessary.
I wound up being a full 2 weeks late and had to be scheduled for an induction. The night before on the phone, Rebecca assured me it would be okay and we made an induction plan together. Fortunaly, I went into labor on my own around midnight, and labored until 6am. I labored mostly in the tub and found her emotional support invaluable. I am most thankful for Rebecca's intervention during the pushing phase. I pushed for 4 hours before my daughter was born and I believe her encouragement to change from pushing in a tub to using a birthing stool was the critical moment that got things moving and allowed us to have a sucessful, safe, vaginal birth. In all, we are incredibly grateful for Rebecca's support, strongly recommend her to you, and we hope to work with her again for future pregnancies and births.
Rebecca was an incredible support for us before, during, and after the birth of our first child. She helped educate us about the many procedure choices and helped me become confident in my ability to have a natural birth. She was always available and happily answered endless questions via email, phone, and text. Rebecca helped coach me through the pain and seemed to always know the right things to say and positions to move into... I could not have done it naturally without her! Now after our son's birth she's been in touch to make sure we are doing well, still available for questions. My husband tells everyone how incredible it was working with her; she helped him coach me and deal with the stress of the birth as well. We VERY highly recommend working with Rebecca!
We are so grateful to Rebecca Urban for being our doula. She helped us welcome into the world our second child who was delivered VBAC in a hospital setting. Rebecca is dedicated, patient, and supportive. She stayed with us through a very long labor helping us to avoid all pain medication. We utillized natural pain relief techniques such as showers, movement, and pressure on the back. I can not encourage couples enough to find a wonderful doula to assist them through labor. Rebeccas knowledge of birth, and faith in my ability to birth naturally gave me the courage I needed to avoid a second c-section. Thank you Rebecca for your hardwork!
Our goal in childbirth has always been for a natural delivery, and with Rebecca’s help, we were able to achieve that goal. Her vast knowledge of pain management, fetal positioning, and mediation with the hospital staff is what allowed us to bring our sons into the world naturally. When our pregnant friends tell us they are considering having a doula, we tell them about our wonderfully positive experience with Rebecca and how, without her, my labors wouldn’t have been the same.
